Script (LEAD) A WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE MAN SAYS EVERY AMERICAN SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO FLY THE FLAG IN THEIR FRONT YARD BUT THE FRANKLIN RESIDENTS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION DISAGREES IT CONSIDERS THE 20 FOOT FLAG POLE ON MICHAEL BECKETT'S LAWN AN EYESORE AS REPORTER NIKKI LEENDERS TELLS US IT'S THE LATEST BATTLE OVER THE STARS AND STRIPES (TAKE PKG) (SOT- I love my country and I like to show my patriotism) A COUPLE OF WEEKS AFTER SEPTEMBER 11TH, MICHAEL BECKETT WENT SHOPPING FOR A FLAG POLE (SOT- The country is at war, we were attacked, thousands of people died and it's just an important thing to do When someone sees a flag flying anywhere you think, for just a second, how important it is that we live where we do) BUT WHERE HE LIVES, IN FRANKLIN FIELDSTONE FARMS SUBDIVISION, FLYING THE FLAG ON A FLAG POLE IS NOT ALLOWED SO SOON AFTER IT WENT UP, BECKETT GOT A LETTER (SOT- It said you're in violation of the rules and if you don't take the flag down or get approval, you will be fined 50 dollars for the first month, that fine doubles every month) HE SAYS, WHAT'S WORSE, THERE ARE DOZENS OF RULE INFRACTIONS ALL AROUND HIS NEIGHBORHOOD THAT SEEM TO GO UNNOTICED (SOT- Disapproved fences to numbers wrong on mail boxes to basketball goals that are misplaced, that sort of thing so I don't know why they're coming after my flag pole) (REPORTER STAND UP- When we came to the property manager's office to get some answers we were told we could reach him on his cell phone When we called he said he couldn't talk about the matter and then he hung up) NEIGHBORS SAY THEY APPRECIATE THE STARS AND STRIPES (SOT- I don't have a problem with it I think in light of everything we've been through it's an asset to the area) BECKETT SAYS AT NEXT MONTH'S MEETING, HE'LL TRY ONCE MORE TO CONVINCE THE ASSOCIATION TO LEAVE OLD GLORY FLYING (SOT- If that fails the only other recourse I have is to take the flag pole down which will be a sad day for me and hopefully a lot of other Americans) RECAP
