SHOTS OF PEOPLE DRIVING WITH CELL PHONES (TALKING ON PHONE) SOT. SHOT OF TRAFFIC. MORE SOTS. SHOT OF MORE TRAFFIC. SHOT OF CELL PHONE LEGIS. SHOT OF BILL TO STOP CELL PHONE DRIVING. SHOT OF CELL PHONE STORE. SOT. MORE TRAFFIC.
NEW RESTRICTIONS IN COLORADO ARE FORCING PEOPLE TO USE "HAND-FREE" CELL PHONES WHILE IN CARS.
LEAD: ARE YOU FRUSTRATED BY DRIVERS ON THEIR CELL PHONES? COLORADO COULD JOIN NEW YORK, IN A HAND-HELD CELL PHONE BAN. IT'S SO CONTROVERSIAL HOWEVER, THAT MONDAY, A LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE COULDN'T DECIDE HOW TO PROCEED. AND AS REPORTER JANN TRACEY SHOWS US, EVEN DRIVERS ARE DIVIDED ON THE ISSUE. (TAKE PKG) SCRIPT: NINETY FOUR PERCENT OF COLORADANS SAY THEY NOTICE WHEN ANOTHER DRIVER IS ON A CELL PHONE. SOME SAY IT LOOKS LIKE THE DRIVER IS DRUNK. (SOT "I notice they swerve a lot.") EVEN DRIVERS WHO DO IT, ADMIT IT'S DISTRACTING. (SOT "That's why I don't do it very often.") HER CELL PHONE WAS ON HER LAP, SO IS HIS... (SOT "Is that where you keep your cell phone when you drive? Well I keep in in the console actually. Do you drive and use the cell phone, yes.") BUT OPINIONS DIFFER ON WHETHER DRIVING WITH ONE HAND ON THE CELL PHONE SHOULD BE ILLEGAL. (SOT "You might need to use windshield wipers, you might need to use the lights. And with a hand held cell phone, have one hand available to do all those things...") STATE REPRESENTATIVE MICHAEL GARCIA INTRODUCED A BILL THAT WOULD MAKE COLORADO THE SECOND STATE IN THE COUNTRY TO MANDATE CELL PHONES BE HANDS FREE WHILE DRIVING. SOME ARE WORRIED ABOUT WHAT COULD BE NEXT. (SOT Ed Giovanni "Pretty soon, you're not going to be able to look at a map while you drive, you are not going to be able to smoke while you drive you are not going to be drink a soda when you drive, because that is taking your attention away from it.") JUST GETTING IT OUT OF COMMITTEE MAY BE TOUGHER THAN DRIVING IN RUSH HOUR; A SIMILAR BILL FAILED TWO YEARS AGO. JANN TRACEY W-B TWO NEWS. RECAP
