JURY SELECTION IS UNDERWAY IN THE TILLIE TOOTER TRIAL. SHE IS THE GRANDMOTHER WHO SURVIVED DAYS IN A SWAMP AFTER HER CAR WAS KNOCKED OFF A HIGHWAY. PROSECUTORS SAY THE MAN ACCUSED OF CAUSING THE ACCIDENT IS TRYING TO STRIKE A DEAL IN THE CASE.
(LEAD) JURY SELECTION UNDERWAY IN THE TILLE TOOTER TRIAL. SHE'S THE SOUTH FLORIDA GRANDMA WHO SURVIVED SEVERAL DAYS IN A SWAMP AFTER HER CAR WAS KNOCKED OFF THE ROAD. BUT THE TRIAL MAY NEVER HAPPEN BECAUSE THE MAN ACCUSED OF RUNNING THE GRANDMOTHER OFF THE ROAD IS TRYING TO STRIKE A DEAL. LYNN GORDON HAS THE STORY FROM THE BROWARD COUNTY COURTHOUSE. SHE BECAME A NATIONAL CELEBRITY, TILLE TOOTER FROM PEMBROKE PINES SURVIVING FOR THREE DAYS ON RAIN WATER AND A PIECE OF CANDY, ALL AFTER HER CAR WAS BUMPED OFF I-5-95 IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. THE MIRACULOUS RESCUE TAKING PLACE AFTER A MAN PICKING UP TRASH ALONG THE HIGHWAY TOOTER AND CALLED FOR HELP. (NATS) NOW THE MAN ACCUSED OF RUNNING TOOTER OFF THE ROAD A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, IS READY TO STAND TRIAL. 22-YEAR-OLD SCOTT CAMPBELL (??) CHARGED WITH LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT WITH INJURIES AND FILING A FALSE POLICE REPORT. PROSECUTORS SAY CAMPBELL FAILED TO CALL POLICE AFTER HE HIT TOOTER. BUT DEFENSE ATTORNEYS MAINTAIN CAMPBELL FELL ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL AND DIDN'T KNOW HE HIT TOOTER. THE YOUNG MAN'S PARENTS IN COURT, HIS MOTHER WIPING AWAY TEARS. BUT JUST AS JURY SELECTION WAS ABOUT TO BEGIN, PROSECUTOR GREGG ROSSMAN OFFERING THE DEFENDANT A PLEA DEAL.
