A MAN WHO PLEADED GUILTY TO KNOCKING AN ELDERLY DRIVER INTO A SWAMP WAS SENTENCED TODAY IN SOUTH FLORIDA. TILLIE TOOTER, THE 85 YEAR OLD GRANDMA, SURVIVED SEVERAL DAYS TRAPPED IN HER CAR IN THE SWAMP BEFORE SHE WAS FOUND.
(LEAD) THE MAN WHO RAN SOUTH FLORIDA GRANDMOTHER TILLIE TOOTER OFF THE INTERSTATE HAS APOLOGIZED. SCOTT CAMPBELL WAS ORDERED TO MAKE THE PUBLIC DISPLAY OF REMORSE AS PART OF A PLEA DEAL THAT IS KEEPING HIM OUT OF JAIL. LYNN GORDON HAS THE STORY... I feel very, very remorseful and I did want to get in contact with you to apologize, but once my attorneys got involved, they took control of what I could and couldn't do. IT'S THE APOLOGY THAT SHE HAS BEEN WAITING FOR FOR A YEAR AND A HALF...TILLIE TOOTER, THE PEMBROKE PINES GRANDMOTHER WHO SURVIVED ON RAIN WATER AND A COUGH DROP FOR THREE DAYS AFTER HER CAR GOT KNOCKED OFF I-5-95 OVER A RETAINING WALL, PLUNGING 50 FEET INTO A SWAMP. THIS MORNING TOOTER IN A FORT LAUDERDALE COURTROOM FACING 22 YEAR-OLD SCOTT CAMPBELL, THE MAN WHO CAUSED THE ACCIDENT. (SOT- "I hope that you have learned a lesson from this ordeal. I feel deeply sorry for your mother because I am sure you broke her heart. But I will pay for the rest of my life. I have no business to you any more.") YESTERDAY CAMPBELL PLEADING GUILTY TO LEAVING THE SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT WITH INJURIES AND FILING A FALSE POLICE REPORT. THE PLEA KEEPING CAMPBELL OUT OF JAIL AND GIVING HIM FIVE YEARS PROBATION INSTEAD. CAMPBELL ALSO REQUIRED TO APOLOGIZE TO THE 85 YEAR OLD, AN APOLOGY TOOTER BELIEVES WAS HEARTFELT.
