IN SOUTH FLORIDA, OFFICIALS ARE WEIGHING AN HISTORIC DECISION -- ONE THAT COULD SAVE A FLORIDA LANDMARK FROM THE DEMOLITION TEAM. PRESERVATIONISTS ARE HOPING TO RESTORE THE HAMPTON HOUSE -- A MIAMI HOTEL ONCE VISITED BY MUHAMMAD ALI AND MALCOLM X -- AMONG OTHERS. BUT FIRST, THEY NEED AN IMPORTANT DISTINCTION FROM COUNTY OFFICIALS. SHEER JUBILATION AMONGST THOSE WHO HELPED TO MAKE THE HAMPTON HOUSE A HISTORIC SITE. BUILT IN 19-53 WHEN SOUTH FLORIDA WAS BOOMING, THE HAMPTON HOUSE MOTEL WAS THE ONLY PLACE AFRICAN AMERICANS COULD GO TO STAY WHEN MIAMI WAS SEGREGATED. CIVIL RIGHTS LEADERS LIKE MARTIN LUTHER KING JR., SINGERS LIKE ELLA FITZGERALD AND SAMMY DAVIS JUNIOR ALL STAYED HERE AND PERFORMED. NEARLY FIFTY YEARS LATER, THE SYMBOL OF THE BLACK EXPERIENCE IS ALMOST GONE. NOW THE RESIDENTS TAKING THEIR FIGHT TO THE HISTORIC COMMITTEE TO MAKE SURE IT BECOMES A HISTORIC LANDMARK IN ORDER TO SAVE IT. (SOT - JENKINS "What we're trying to do is define the 20th Century and the black experience of the 20th Century, which through no fault of ours was separate and unique.") THE HAMPTON HOUSE IS CURRENTLY BEING USED AS APARTMENTS, LAST YEAR STUDENTS GOT INVOLVED AND BEGAN THE PROCESS OF MAKING THIS PLACE A HISTORIC LANDMARK. (SOT - JEFFREY "The Hampton House is very important to our community and it has give us so much and it's a historical part of this community.") JUST HOURS LATER, THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD VOTED UNANIMOUSLY TO DESIGNATE THE BUILDING A HISTORIC SITE, MAKING EVERYONE'S HARD WORK, WORTH IT. (SOT - DELOACH "We felt that the Hampton House was too important of a place to lose to anything.") RECAP
