IT'S NATIONAL TV TURNOFF WEEK
COULD YOU AND YOUR FAMILY GO WITHOUT WATCHING TELEVISION FOR A WEEK? OR AT LEAST WATCH MUCH LESS OF IT? MORE THAN 6-MILLION AMERICANS WILL FIND OUT IF THEY CAN DO IT IT'S NATIONAL TV TURNOFF WEEK AND AS REPORTER KARLA FREIVALDS TELLS US, FAMILIES WHO ARE JOINING IN SAY IT'S NOT AN EASY TASK BUT IT'S WORTH IT (TAKE PKG) DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT TURNING ON THE T-V AT RUTH CORYELL'S HOUSE THIS WEEK (SOT-CORYELL Just in case they're gonna forget, that's the reminder) THIS IS THE 4TH YEAR THIS MOTHER OF FOUR AND HER FAMILY WILL PARTICIPATE IN NATIONAL TV TURNOFF WEEK (SOT-CORYELL I think they pick up on the violence real fast, the language) THE RULES: NO T-V, OR MUCH LESS T-V FOR ONE WHOLE WEEK THE CHALLENGE: CHANGING THE WAY AMERICANS THINK ABOUT TV (SOT- VESPE We're not saying throw out the TV or kill your television, but what we are saying is let's make the TV one of the millions of choices in our lives rather than the default setting) 6-POINT-4 MILLION PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS YEAR'S TV-TURNOFF WEEK AMONG THEM, STUDENTS AT NEILL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A REMINDER GLOWS IN THE HALLWAY, AND EVERY MORNING (SOT- NATS Turning off the TV gives us a chance to think, read, create and do) (REPORTER STAND UP You may think your child spends the most time here in the classroom but studies show that children will spend even more time in front of the television this year 900 hours in front of a teacher, 1023 hours in front of a television) (SOT- STUDENT It probably affects your grades a lot) (SOT- STUDENT It kind of distracts them from learning and reading) STUDIES ALSO SHOW TOO MUCH T-V PROMOTES A POOR DIET AND POOR HEALTH WHICH CAN CAUSE MORE SERIOUS PROBLEMS LATER DOWN THE ROAD SO HOW DO YOU CONVINCE YOUR KIDS TO JOIN IN TV TURNOFF WEEK? PRESENT IT AS A FUN CHALLENGE, TELL THEM IT'S PART OF A NATIONWIDE EVENT, AND OF COURSE, LEAD BY EXAMPLE (SOT- CORYELL If mom's watching a movie and tells the kids to go out of a room because she's watching a movie but they can't you know that really helps) AND HERE'S ONE MORE IDEA (SOT- WILLIAM While they're sleeping you could pretend that it vanished, then they would try and have to figure out fun stuff to do without the t-v) KARLA FREIVALDS, REPORTING RECAP
