Script | LEAD: HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO OWN A PIECE OF BETHPAGE BLACK. THAT'S THE SITE OF THIS YEAR'S UP OPEN TOURNAMENT ON LONG ISLAND. REPORTER SCOTT FELDMAN IS AT THE COURSE WITH THE STORY OF A RESIDENT WHO HAS "PENNED" HIMSELF INTO THE HISTORY BOOKS. SCRIPT: (SOT - "My name is Len Mulqueen and I am an Long Island wood turner.") AND AN AVID GOLFER. SO WHEN LEN AS PRESIDENT OF THE BETHPAGE HISTORICAL SOCIETY WENT TO BETHPAGE BLACK TO VIDEO TAPE DOCUMENT THE COURSE WHERE HE CADDIED AS A TEENAGER AND STILL PLAYED TODAY, HE SPOTTED SOME ONE HUNDRED TREES THAT WERE BEING CUT DOWN AS PART OF THE RENOVATION FOR THE US OPEN. (SOT - LEN "You have to stop and see what it is, because you never know what piece of wood you're going to get.") LEN ASKED STATE PARK SUPERINTENDENT DAVE CATTALANO COULD HE HAD HAVE SOME OF THE OAK AND BLACK WALNUT LOGS. (SOT - LEN "He agreed because they were only going to cut it up for fire wood.") LEN TURNED THIS PIECE OF RAW WOOD INTO THIS BEAUTIFUL BOWL AND SOMETHING ELSE THAT WOULD DELIGHT SUPERINTENDENT CATALLANO. A HANDCRAFTED BALL POINT PEN WITH THE INSCRIPTION BETHPAGE HOME OF THE BLACK COURSE. (SOT - LEN "Just the expression on his face, just told me 'Wow, I think I have something here.'") SINCE THAT DAY FOUR YEARS AGO, LEN MULQUEEN HAS MADE DOZENS OF BOWLS AND MORE THAN THOUSAND PENS WITH A GOLF CLUB CLIP, IN A HOURS TIME LEN CAN TURNOUT SIX OR SEVEN PENS. (SOT - LEN "I sold more pens in six months than I did in I did in six years from my exotic wood collection.") BUT THE PEN IS MORE THAN JUST A PEN, IT'S LONG ISLAND AND BETHPAGE BLACK GOLF HISTORY, (SOT - LEN "You can actually say I have a piece of the Golf course.") |
