SENATE VOTES 69-30 TO IMPORT FDA APPROVED DRUGS TO CANADA
SOME SENATORS THINK IT'S A WAY TO LOWER PRESCRIPTION DRUG COSTS...ESPECIALLY FOR AMERICA'S SENIOR CITIZENS. (TAKE VONATS) ON WEDNESDAY... THE U-S SENATE VOTED 69-30 TO ALLOW F-D-A APPROVED PRESCRIPTION DRUGS TO BE RE-IMPORTED TO CANADA. THE IDEA IS THAT AMERICANS CAN THEN GO NORTH OF THE BORDER TO BUY THEM -- AT A LOWER COST. CANADA HAS PRICE CAPS ON DRUGS. BACKERS OF THE MEASURE HOPE THE THREAT OF IMPORTATION ALSO WILL FORCE DRUG MAKERS TO LOWER U-S PRICES. A MOVE SOME SAY IS NECESSARY. (SOT - SNOWE "It's simply unconscionable in a country of our means and wealth that older Americans should ever have to choose between filling their cupboards and filling their prescriptions." :11) (MORE VO) MANY IN THE DRUG INDUSTRY DON'T LIKE THE IDEA OF THEIR DRUGS BEING IMPORTED TO A DIFFERENT COUNTRY. THEY SAY IT MIGHT MEAN AMERICANS COULD GET COUNTERFEIT OR DANGEROUS DRUGS. RECAP
