Script (LEAD) THE LATEST POLL SHOWS VOTERS ARE LEANING TOWARD SMALLER CLASS SIZE, FREE PRE-K AND A NO SMOKING BAN IN PUBLIC PLACES.. IT'S ALL THE TALK ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL. BUT AS XXXXXX REPORTS, SUPPORTERS OF THE PROPOSED AMENDMENTS ARE WATCHING THEIR BACKS.. WHILE FLORIDA'S GOVERNOR SAYS HE ISN'T WATCHING AT ALL. (TAKE PKG) THE LATEST POLL CONDUCTED BY SEVERAL FLORIDA NEWSPAPERS ADDS UP TO GOOD NEWS FOR AMENDMENT SUPPORTERS. (SOT - FILER "It's very gratifying to see especially after a month long war that has been raged by the state government really on this citizen initiative.") (SOT - EDIE "At any point, the tobacco industry can come out with a very strong advertising campaign so we want to be prepared.") BUT ON GOVERNOR JEB BUSH'S CAMPAIGN TRAIL FOR RE-ELECTION, POLLS DON'T MATTER. (SOT - BUSH "Polls are a nice indication of a point in time.. but we are so close to the election that we should just wait and let them vote.") THE GOVERNOR, ATTENDING A LUNCHEON FOR EMERGENCY WORKERS IN TALLAHASSEE THURSDAY, BACKED UP HIS SUPPORT FOR FREE PRE-K.. AND BASICALLY GAVE A NOD TO A BAN ON SMOKING IN PUBLIC PLACES. (SOT - BUSH "I don't think based on what I have been told, that it has impacted restaurant sales.. people still want to go out to eat.") BUT THE INITIATIVE VOTERS AGREE ON THE MOST, SMALLER CLASS SIZE.. WILL NOT GET A YES VOTE FROM THE GOVERNOR. (SOT - BUSH "Once people see how this will diminish teacher quality, how it will strain social services and require a significant tax increase and how it will sterilize classroom learning which is really the ultimate objective.. then I think people will take a second look at it.") HIS DEMOCRATIC RIVALS, TAMPA ATTORNEY BILL MCBRIDE AND FORMER U-S ATTORNEY GENERAL JANET RENO PLAN TO CAMPAIGN ON THE NEW NUMBERS. (SOT - BUSH "If Reno and McBride are for this, then they ought to have the guts to say how they are going to pay for it.") GOVERNOR BUSH MAY HAVE THE CHANCE TO ASK THAT QUESTION PERSONALLY TO ONE OF HIS RIVALS IN A DEBATE.. AFTER DEMOCRATS PICK WHO WILL FACE BUSH IN NOVEMBER. (TAG) SUPPORTERS FOR THE CLASS SIZE AMENDMENT ARE EXPECTING MORE CRITICISM FROM THE GOVERNOR ABOUT THE ISSUE. ONE PROPOSED AMENDMENT VOTER'S DIDN'T SEEM TO LIKE? A REVIEW ON TAX EXEMPTIONS SUPPORTED BY SENATE PRESIDENT JOHN MCKAY. SUPPORTERS AND MCKAY ARE SAID TO BE GEARING UP FOR AN AD CAMPAIGN ASKING VOTERS TO SUPPORT IT.
