NOT ALL FATS ARE CREATED EQUAL. SOME FATS ARE ACTUALLY GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH.
WE HEAR ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME--THE VIRTUES AND PITFALLS OF FAT IN OUR DIET. WHAT TYPES SHOULD YOU EAT AND WHAT SHOULD YOU AVOID? AND DOES IT REALLY DESERVE ITS BAD RAP? LISA BLACK HAS THE REAL SKINNY ON FAT. (TAKE PKG) NO BONES ABOUT IT--FOODS HIGH IN FAT ARE USUALLY THE ONES WE LOVE. FAT ADDS FLAVOR, TEXTURE AND KEEPS US FULL. BUT FAT HAS A BAD REPUTATION FOR, WELL, MAKING US FAT. (SOT - "I think it's the flavor. Um, fried chicken, um, I don't know, it's just a certain flavor. It's good. It's bad for you but it's good!") (SOT - "I don't know why french fries taste good but they do!") BUT BEFORE YOU HEAD DOWN THE NON-FAT AISLE, KEEP IN MIND THAT NOT ALL FATS ARE CREATED EQUAL. FRIED CHICKEN AND FRENCH FRIES ASIDE, SOME FATS ARE ACTUALLY GOOD FOR YOU. MARNA CANTERBURY IS A REGISTERED DIETICIAN WITH HEALTHPARTNERS IN MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA. (SOT - "There are fats, however, that can actually lower your blood cholestral level. Mono-unsaturated or poly-unsaturated fats and we'll just call them good fats or unsaturated fats.") THESE 'GOOD' FATS ARE FOUND IN MOST VEGETABLE OILS, SALMON, AVOCADO AND NUTS. THEY SUPPLY ESSENTIAL VITAMINS AND FATTY ACIDS AND ALSO HELP TO BUILD HEALTHY CELLS AND KEEP HAIR AND SKIN LOOKING GOOD. SATURATED AND TRANS FAT FALL INTO THE 'BAD' FAT CATEGORY. AND EATING TOO MUCH OF THEM MAY RAISE YOUR RISK FOR HEART DISEASE. (SOT - "I know olive oil is a good fat and lard and Crisco are not, butter I guess is not a good fat, but we do use butter. I like to eat, I like butter.") FATTY MEATS AND WHOLE FAT DAIRY PRODUCTS ARE ALL HIGH IN SATURATED FATS. ANYTHING WITH THE WORD 'HYDROGENATED' ON THE LIST OF INGREDIENTS CONTAIN TRANS FATS. (SOT - "The biggest source of saturated and trans fats in the diet is from snack foods, pastries, things that come with that type of fat already in them.") SO THE REAL SKINNY ON FAT IS THIS: IN SMALL AMOUNTS, UNSATURATED FATS DOES THE BODY GOOD. INDULGE IN THE OCCASIONAL FRENCH-FRY, BUT AS A GENERAL RULE, KEEP THE 'BAD' FATS TO A MINIMUM.
