Script | (SUGGESTED TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO)00:00agricultural resources in the United States from invasive pests and diseases. Due to the recent outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in parts of Europe, we wanted to remind the public of our safeguarding efforts. Each day an average of 250,000 travelers enter the United States from around the world. Any one of these travelers could unknowingly bring in invasive pest or disease into this country, which could devastate our agricultural economy. The comprehensive safeguarding system used by USDA to protect agricultural and environmental resources has allowed the United States to participate in the global marketplace. We also have to mitigate risks when we allow products from other countries into the US and prevent the accidental introduction of plant and animal pests and diseases. The safeguarding system includes many elements, inspection of passenger baggage and cargo at all US ports of entry, national and international surveillance efforts. Early detection and rapid response APHIS is on heightened alert for arriving travelers, cargo and mail from the United Kingdom and other countries where foot and mouth disease has been found. We're here today to kick off USDA is traveler education campaign to make people more aware of our safeguarding systems. We also need to know that you will play a part in our efforts to keep this country free of diseases and pests. Informed travelers are our best ally. We need to keep these pests out of the United States. And USDA inspectors will also demonstrate the process by which international passenger baggage is inspected and international passengers are questioned. This mock inspection will demonstrate the entire clearance process including filling out a customs declaration form being referred to a plant protection and quarantine inspector having soiled footwear disinfected and having prohibited products detected in luggage by our Beagle brigade. With me to death what02:24about diseases about Foot Mouth Disease is one of the most highly contagious diseases that affect livestock effect cattle swine also can affect sheep, goats, deer and any other cloven hoof animal cloven hoof meaning animals we do toes for the mouth disease or FMD as we call it a spread very swiftly unless immediate action is taken to stop that movement. That is unusual in older animals, severe production losses, foot and mouth disease is likely to kill the young animals and also produces a lot of abortions. It's important to know that foot and mouth disease does not affect humans. So it's not a food safety issue or public health issue. Because this virus is spread very fast in the farms, and because of the grave economic consequences that it has.03:16The is one of the livestock diseases that we dread the most infected herds nesis03:25our press briefing this morning really has a couple of different components to it. First of all, we'll have a briefing from the administrator of APHIS and from the deputy administrators for veterinary services and land to do a demonstration for you today.
