THE NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION SAYS LACK OF FUNDS, POOR POLICY AND INAPPROPRIATE DEVELOPMENT THREATEN HISTORIC TREASURES.
STORY DETAILS: ECONOMIC GOOD TIMES CAN OFTEN MEAN BAD TIMES FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION. IN THE RUSH TO CAPITALIZE ON FAVORABLE BUSINESS CONDITIONS, AMERICA'S PAST IS IN DANGER OF BEING OBLITERATED. THE NATIONAL TRUST FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION ISSUED ITS ANNUAL LIST OF AMERICA'S 11 MOST ENDANGERED HISTORIC PLACES. THE 11 SITES ARE CHOSEN TO ILLUSTRATE HIGHLY SIGNIFICANT SYMBOLS OF OUR AMERICAN HERITAGE THREATENED BY NEGLECT, DETERIORATION, INSUFFICIENT FUNDS, INAPPROPRIATE DEVELOPMENT OR INSENSITIVE PUBLIC POLICY. THE SUMMER RETREAT WHERE ABRAHAM LINCOLN DRAFTED THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION, BUILDINGS THAT HOUSED GEORGE WASHINGTON AND THE CONTINENTAL ARMY, HISTORIC MINING STRUCTURES IN THE SCENIC COLORADO ROCKIES, AND AN ART DECO RACETRACK IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ARE JUST FOUR OF THE 11 SITES NAMED ON THE 2000 LIST. THE HISTORY CHANNEL WILL FEATURE THE ENDANGERED LIST ON THURSDAY, JUNE 29, IN A ONE-HOUR DOCUMENTARY, "AMERICA'S MOST ENDANGERED" AT 10:00 PM ET/PT.
