Script | (SUGGESTED TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO)00:00Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon.00:02Available in the press office are embargoed copies of the Secretary's address this afternoon before the United Nation General Assembly special session on Disarmament in New York,00:13Jack, the Greeks have now00:16confessed that they have this Mohammed Rashid in hand, but they're going to try them on a passport charge, false passport charge. Do you have any damage?00:27The information I have is that Mr. Rashid, a Palestinian terrorist, was detained by Greek authorities on May 30. The United States government has asked for his immediate extradition to the United States in connection with charges stemming from an explosion on board Pan Am Flight 83 Oh in August of 1982 one passenger was killed in that explosion, 15 others were wounded. The United States was heartened by the statement of the Greek government on June 7, in which it recalled, in connection with the Rashid case, its dedication to the fight against terrorism, we strongly believe that the most effective way to fight terrorism in this case is to extradite expeditiously begin extradition proceedings against Rashid01:11well does the decision to put put him on trial for lesser charges, given01:16that the administration feels the the Sandinistas were to blame for the latest breakdown in the talks there. Does the administration now feel that Congress should approve more military aid for the Contras? Is this now the time for that?01:31The question that you're referring to has been one of continuing concern, as you're aware, there are consultations continuing on that kind of question with members of the Congress, as well as with the Nicaraguan democratic resistance, but there have been no decisions taken, nor has there been any timetable set for taking that kind of a decision. What's happening on the consultation? Some01:57of the Contra leaders are coming here the next day or two, on the Sharpeville six.02:13We are greatly concerned by this latest development, the sharp Bill six case, which you have all seen in the press today, as you know, President Reagan appealed to State President PW Botha in March for clemency for the sixth the appeal was based on humanitarian considerations. Subsequent to that appeal, we were heartened by the decision by the Pretoria Supreme Court to stay the executions pending a decision on whether to grant a new trial. Now the same court has decided that it does not have the authority to grant a new trial. We are following developments in the case closely. We continue to appeal for a humanitarian resolution of the sharp Bill six case, whether it be clemency or the granting of a new trial, we will be making our views known to the South African government through diplomatic channels. You have any comment on the03:00front complaining that Chester Crocker met with Jonas avimbi and Kinshasa earlier this month, and say it damages the chance for negotiations. Did such a meeting take place? And what's the situation on a new round of talks? I03:14don't have anything continue. Of course, the United States has regular high level senior contacts with Mr. Sibimbi. But in this case, I will, just to clear the air, say that that particular report you referred to is wrong. |
