Video Description | Black and white film (narration/music not licensable) crowds on decks at Oakland, California port to say goodbye to sailors, who kiss their girlfriends and wives goodbye. Large crowd on pier as we shove off. POV from bow of ship as we sail over waves, swells. Sailors do semaphore signal drills on deck, practice CPR resuscitation. In galley kitchen, loaves of bread ready to be baked. Large pots and pans on stoves. Ships in Alaskan harbor. Crew members take a hiking expedition up snowy peak. They sled down. Map shows progress to Nome. Sea lions on island jump into water. Two bulls fighting. Sailors picking up young sea lion pups. CU of his face. Sailors looking thru scopes of large artillery guns, practice loading shells. We hit first ice. Arrival at Port of Nome. Shots of the northernmost Coast Guard station. Local fishermen carrying in nets of cod, Gold mining still done in Nome, Alaska. System of pipes used to thaw frozen ground. Dredge digs into harbor, letting out tailings in rear. Dredging buckets are sifted, brought to miner's pan. Great footage of this traditional gold panning method still in use. Sluice box, sieve. Map shows entrance to Bering Sea, King and Savonga Islands.
