(SUGGESTED TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO) Only 10 inmates arrived today at the St Cloud prison More will come during the next several months The prisoners were brought here under heavy guard They wore handcuffs and leg irons and appeared tired after traveling some nine hours by bus from Green Bay, Wisconsin They're being sent here under a contract between Minnesota and Wisconsin, the state agreed to accept up to 300 prisoners to help relieve serious overcrowding problems in Wisconsin prisons that in exchange for $32 million Wisconsin will pay the state to keep its prisoners for the next two years Prison officials at St Cloud today said the new arrivals would be no problem to accommodate their cells are all ready for them as soon as they are received and put in the institution, they will be screened and oriented and after that, assigned, just like Minnesota inmates, to various jobs or school assignments, whatever might be appropriate for each individual, the prisoners being sent here have all been screened Minnesota will not accept prisoners from Wisconsin with medical, emotional or disciplinary problems The prison at St Cloud has 55 acres behind high walls with a capacity for 720 inmates The population here today stands at 680 more Wisconsin prisoners will come here, but their transfers are kept secret for security reasons We do know 10 more will arrive next week, either here at St Cloud or still water And more will come here this winter, when the new prison at Oak Park Heights opens, the money Wisconsin will pay Minnesota to keep its prisoners will now allow the state to open the new prison on schedule in March TAG: MNH
