Reel Summary | CA. 1965 APPROXIMATELY 850 FEET OF COLOR 16MM FILM WITH AN OPTICAL SOUND TRACK. RUN TIME: 24:22 FOOTAGE IS A COMPILATION OF DUPLICATED FILM THAT CAHN PUT TOGETHER WITH ADDED SOUND AND NARRATION BY FATS HOUSTON, WHO IS ALSO SEEN IN THE FILMS. DELORES ARDOYNO IS CREDITED AS PRODUCER AND WRITTER, AND THE PROJECT WAS DONE FOR TULANE UNIVERSITY. TITLE CARDS ARE SEEN THROUGHOUT THE FILM AND INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING SECTIONS: NEW ORLEANS FUNERAL - TO THE FUNERAL PARLOR - AT THE CEMETERY HYMNS - COMING BACK HYMNS - PICOU'S FUNERAL - TO THE FUNERAL PARLOR MARCHES - TO THE CEMETERY DIRGES - COMING BACK JAZZ. DURING THE NARRATION, HOUSTON DESCRIBES THE FUNERAL OF ALPHONSE PICOU (FEBRUARY 7, 1961), SUGGESTING THAT THE FOOTAGE OF A LARGE JAZZ FUNERAL IS THAT OF THE FAMOUS CLARINET PLAYER. SHOWN IS FATS HOUSTON LEADING THE EUREKA BRASS BAND DURING THE JAZZ FUNERAL OF ALPHONSE PICOU, CLARINETIST. THE TUXEDO BRASS BAND ALSO PLAYED AT THIS VERY LARGE EVENT. THE PROCESSION PASSES THE CHRISTIAN CONGREGATIONAL BAPTIST CHURCH AND A BARBER SHOP, LOCATED IN THE SAME BUILDING, AT 1517 ST. PHILIP AND CONTINUES PAST THE JOSEPH A. CRAIG SCHOOL AT 1423 ST. PHILIP AND THE TIP TOP BAR ACROSS THE STREET. THE MUSICIANS GATHERED AT PICOU'S BAR ON URSULINE STREET, AND PARADED THROUGH THE TREME NEIGHBORHOOD TO THE BLANDIN FUNERAL HOME AT 1116 ST. CLAUDE, WHERE RELIGIOUS SERVICES TOOK PLACE. FOOTAGE ENDS WITH A MAN WHO APPEARS TO BE RODNEY BATISTE, DANCING ON THE NEUTRAL OF N. CLAIBORNE AVENUE, BEFORE ALL THE OAKS TREES WERE REMOVED AND AN OVERPASS BUILT. PICOU WAS BURIED AT MR. OLIVET CEMETERY. SEE 2000.78.4.3 FOR ORIGINAL FOOTAGE OF PICOU'S FUNERAL. THE QUALITY OF THE DUPLICATED FILM IS NOT VERY GOOD AND THE AUDIO WAS RECORDED BY AN ASSOCIATE OF JULES. |
