The Andes, running along South America's western side, is among the world's longest mountain ranges. Its varied terrain encompasses glaciers, volcanoes, grassland, desert, lakes and forest. The mountains shelter pre-Columbian archaeological sites and wildlife including chinchillas and condors. From Venezuela in the north, the range passes through Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile. Lake Llanquihue is in southern Chile's Lake District. It's known for its vast waters and black-sand shores. To the east, snow-capped Osorno Volcano has ice caves. Nearby are Petrohué Falls, flowing down chutes etched by lava. On the lake's southwest edge, Puerto Varas has German-style buildings and a red-and-white, 3-towered church. North of Puerto Varas, Frutillar's glass-fronted Lake Theater stages concerts. Osorno Volcano is a 2,652-metre tall conical stratovolcano lying between Osorno Province and Llanquihue Province, in Los Lagos Region of Chile. It stands on the southeastern shore of Llanquihue Lake, and also towers over Todos los Santos Iguazú Falls or Iguaçu Falls are waterfalls of the Iguazu River on the border of the Argentine province of Misiones and the Brazilian state of Paraná.
