Pan of artifacts STORYLINE: Customs agents in Peru have seized 42 pieces of centuries-old colonial art believed to have been stolen from churches in the country's highlands. Inspectors said the religious oil paintings and carved wooden pedestals covered in gold leaf were probably destined for black markets in the United States. Peru's tax agency, Sunat, said in a statement that the artworks were seized on Monday after inspectors checked a crate registered as a shipment of household goods. The shipping route - to a person identified as Gustavo Pescadere in Montevideo, Uruguay, via Miami - raised suspicion. Officials said the art smugglers planned to "lose" the shipment in Miami, where it would have then entered illegal art markets in the US. Experts with Peru's National Institute of Culture dated the works to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Most pieces are likely to have been taken from small colonial-era churches in the Puno and Cuzco regions to the southeast of the capital, Lima, officials said. No arrests have been made. Earlier this month, US officials in New Mexico seized a 17th century altar piece stolen from a church in a rural Peruvian village that had turned up in the hands of an American collector.
