TITLE: SAO PAULO FASHION WEEK
LOCATION: SAO PAULO BRAZIL
DATE: 1 FEB 2001
Sao Paulo Fashion Week kicked off last week, gaining a new prestige from the increasing Brazilian presence in the international fashion and beauty industry.
With a total of 25 collections being presented, the event highlighted the growing fashion industry in the country. Without the presence of Gisele Bundchen - Brazil's top model, and now an international star - it was ANA CLAUDIA MICHELS who grabbed the attention of the media.
Sao Paulo is the greatest metropolis in South America, and the commercial hub of a vibrant fashion industry. Last year, for example, the textile industry made 22 billion US dollars, and gave jobs to 1.5 million people. It's now the second industry in the country in number of employees, behind the Civil Engineering industry. It makes Brazil the fourth biggest producer of ready-made clothes in the world, only behind China, United States and India.
With a total cost of 2 million US dollars and an audience of 100 thousand people, Sao Paulo Fashion Week attracted the attention of the international media and reps of famous stores, including the Americans Saks and Barney's, and the French Printemps and Galeries Lafayettes.
The Brazilian stylist ALEXANDER HERCHCOVITCH - one of the most famous outside Brazil - was there to give a hand before the catwalks. He is one of the two stylists at Zoomp - one of the biggest Brazilian labels, with 600 points of sale in the country and other 42 in Europe and America. Only last year, Zoomp sold 580 thousand US dollars' worth of clothes. For RENATO KHERLAKIAN, the 51-year-old owner of Zoomp, various factors contributed to the increasing international success of the Brazilian fashion industry.
While the Brazilian stylists are looking forward to having their own identity in the international fashion industry, Brazilian models are already there. According to Ana Claudia Michels, it's all about having a big smile, lots of fun and loud, unaffected laughter: that's what makes Brazilian models so appealing for the world. That, and perfect beach babe bodies.
Since the glamorous Gisele Bundchen appeared for the first time in an international fashion show, every fashion journalist is focusing on Brazilian girls catwalks. Gisele didn't appear in the Sao Paulo Fashion Show this year, but the fashion journalists and photographers already have another target: 19-year-old ANA CLAUDIA MICHELS.
She was the only model asked to appear in every single fashion show during the event.
On the catwalks, famous Brazilian labels like Forum, Ellus, M Officer, Der Haten and Zoomp produced collections which were sexy and modern, with a mix of fabrics. Influenced by the 1980s, the military and the so-called "preppy chic" look found favour. The colours that will be fashionable in the Autumn-Winter will be classic black, along with red, brown and white.
