The investigation is over, but the battle for compensation has only just begun.
Friday's publication of the final report on the car crash which killed Diana, Princess of Wales, triggers the start of civil actions which could take years to pass through the courts.
French judge Herve Stephan dismissed all charges against the nine photographers and a press motorcyclist implicated in the August 1997 crash in Paris.
However, the findings were rejected by the father of Dodi Fayed - Diana's companion who was also killed in the accident.
Mohamed Al Fayed says he will appeal the decision - a move which could extend the courtroom drama for anything up to another 10 years.
Two years on and people still gather at the unofficial memorial site in Paris to remember Princess Diana.
She died here, under the Pont de l'Alma, with her lover Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul.
Only bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones survived the August 1997 crash.
Speculation has been rife as to exactly what caused the accident, but on Friday, French judge Herve Stephan dismissed all charges against nine photographers and a press motorcyclist.
But although the official report exonerated the photographers - who had been pursuing the Princess's Mercedes through the streets of Paris - of any legal blame for the crash, it did explicitly question the "moral and ethical conditions" of the photographers' work.
Even so, the outcome is a relief to Nicolas Arsov, one of the photographers who had been charged.

"Since the beginning it was clear that there was a high level of alcohol in the blood of the driver, Mr Henri Paul. It was clear that Nicolas Arsov and the other photographers should benefit very quickly of a complete dismissal of the charges."

Driver Henri Paul received the bulk of the blame for the crash.
The judge said he was "inebriated and under the effects of drugs" and driving at excessive speeds.
The report added that the actions of Paul, "who had been called back to service at a time when he expected to be off duty, was the result of several decisions taken by Ehmad (Dodi) Al Fayed who could not be held responsible".
Britain's royal family declined to comment on the long-awaited French report.
Diana's two sons, Princes William and Harry, very publicly closed ranks with their father on Friday, joining him at a military display to mark the official launch of 16 Air Assault Brigade at RAF Wattisham, Suffolk.
Prince William, who has in the past shown great wariness of the media, spent much of the event shielding his face from photographers.
However, the brother of the late Princess of Wales did have a comment to make.
He thanked the Paris judge for the time he spent investigating the circumstances of his sister's death.
Earl Spencer had previously lashed out against the photographers who had been following Diana and Dodi's car shortly before the fatal car crash near the Seine.
He also in the past accused the media of hounding his sister to her death.

"I respect the French court's decision. They have put a lot of time into this matter and I respect their decision and I am sure that legally, they have reached the right conclusion."

Not accepting the findings, however, is Mohamed al Fayed - Dodi's father and owner of London's world famous store, Harrods.
He refuses to accept the verdict that nine photographers and one motorcycle rider, against whom manslaughter charges were dropped, were not culpable, and is going to launch an appeal against the verdict.

"I mean he believes firmly still that there was a conspiracy and that in some way the presence of the paparazzi and the chase were used as a cover for what happened."

The spokesman added Al Fayed believed there were many questions still unanswered.

"Mohammed is a grieving father who wants the answers. He has the resources and the will to get them."

Unlike his former employer, Trevor Rees-Jones has not decided whether to appeal the legal decision.
However, his lawyer says his client has filed a suit against the Ritz Hotel and its car service, Etoile Limousine, "for endangering the lives of others."
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"We're also quite happy that the report does say that the fatal decisions were taken by Dodi Fayed and not my client as he was accused of and lastly we're also happy that the liability indirectly is to be put on the Ritz Hotel and Etoile Limousine."

This was the last time Diana and Dodi were captured together on film, in the lobby of the Ritz Hotel, only moments before the fatal crash.
But although the findings of France's most exhaustive probe yet into a car crash were unequivocal, the saga of what happened in the Pont de l'Alma looks set to drag on.
The fact that Harrods owner Mohamed Al Fayed plans to take the decision to the French Court of Appeal means the legal process is likely to be extended for months - if not years.
