Aerial shot of car pulling into driveway, car parks, explosion on ground where car parked 3. Closer aerial shot of explosion on ground where car parked 4. Wide aerial shot of explosion STORYLINE: US forces have released video footage of an apparent insurgent attack in Iraq last Tuesday (2nd August). The images were recorded by an American Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) in the town of Haditha, in al-Anbar province. US forces say insurgents fired mortar shells from a schoolyard before getting into a car and fleeing the scene. The UAV followed the vehicle until it reached what was believed to be an insurgent safehouse. It then attacked the safehouse. None of the insurgents reportedly survived the strike. The UAV attack came during a week when 14 marines were killed in Haditha by a roadside bomb, one of the deadliest attacks on American troops since the US-led invasion of Iraq.

- Earth Sciences expert, Juliet Biggs, provides updates on the growing tremors on Mount Agung in Indonesia.

--SOT--
Juliet Biggs, University of Bristol: "The Indonesian authorities have been monitoring Agung for many years now. But, particularly in the last month or so, the number of very small earthquakes has been increasing dramatically. These are small earthquakes, and there"s now hundreds per day of them, and the largest ones are the rumbling that people are feeling."

Entire island evacuated as volcanoes rumble in Bali and Vanuatu
By Euan McKirdy, Sandi Sidhu and Chieu Luu
CNN
(CNN) -- Thousands of people have been evacuated on the Indonesian island of Bali and on Ambae island in Vanuatu as two volcanoes threaten to erupt.
The entire population of Ambae is being moved from the path of the "increasingly active" Marano volcano, also known as Lombenben, according to the Pacific nation"s government.
On the Indonesian island of Bali, more than 134,000 people have been taken to shelters as authorities warn that Mount Agung, in the island"s north, could erupt at any time.
Both volcanoes sit on the Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of intense seismic activity that stretches 40,000 kilometers (25,000 miles) from New Zealand to South America.
That they"re showing signs of erupting at the same time is pure coincidence, said Benjamin Andrews, of the Smithsonian Institution"s Global Volcanism Program.

Vanuatu volcano

Vanuatu"s Ambae island hasn"t been evacuated on this scale since an alert in 2005, Minister of Land and Natural Resources Ralph Regenvanu told CNN.
Most of the island"s 11,000 residents are being taken away by boat, but some are also being airlifted to evacuation centers on Vanuatu"s Pentecost and Maewo islands.
On Wednesday, a New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) aerial survey found "huge columns of smoke, ash and volcanic rocks billowing from the crater of an erupting volcano" on the island, according to a press release from the agency.
The alert level is at 4, the second highest on the scale. "Ambae volcano is in an ongoing moderate eruption state," a statement from Vanuatu Meteorology and Geohazards Department said. People in local villages could experience the danger of flying rocks, volcanic gases and acid rain, the statement added.

"The principle concerns here are that the volcano can eject volcanic rocks to distances of many kilometers from the crater, and that the volcano could erupt ash and/or emit sulfur dioxide," said Andrews, from the Smithsonian Institution"s Global Volcanism Program..
Australia had responded to a request for assistance, pledging up to 20.5 million Vatu ($190,000) in "much-needed supplies like food, water, shelter and hygiene kits for affected communities on Ambae," a Vanuatu government statement said Thursday.
Australia was also funding surveillance flights over the volcanoes on Ambae and nearby Ambrym island, it added.

134,000 evacuated in Bali

In Bali, residents are still being moved outside an exclusion zone that stretches 12 kilometers from the center of Mount Agung.
More than 134,000 are living in evacuation centers, sleeping on floors and waiting for something to happen.
"It"s been six days since we are here, we want to go home," said Wayan, 65, who like many Indonesians only goes by one name. He evacuated with this elderly mother, wife, children and young grandchild to the Swecapura sports arena.
Wayan also fled his home back when Mount Agung last erupted in 1963. Back then, there was no evacuation plan, people just "ran to save themselves," he said. More than 1,700 people were killed and many villages destroyed.

This time, 447 temporary shelters have been set up outside the exclusion zone around the volcano, according to the National Disaster Management Agency.
Ngurah Rai International Airport remains open but is on alert in case of ash disruption, and there are plans to bus people to other airports, if needed.

Seismic activity continues in the volcano and the alert level for an eruption has been raised to 4, the highest warning level on the Indonesian scale.

Colombia Drug Plane - Security forces attack suspected drug plane

Mid shot of plane flying 2. Various of plane landing 3. Various of plane stationary 4. Various of plane being fired on, followed by explosion on the plane 5. Various of plane on fire STORYLINE: The Colombian Air Force on Saturday released a video of an assault on a suspected drug plane in Antioquia, about 450 kilometres (280 miles) northwest of Bogota, after the crew allegedly refused to provide identification. The footage showed a white private plane landing on an airstrip and being hit on the ground by fire from Colombian armed forces. The attack was followed by various explosions and a fire breaking out on the plane. Last year General Edgar Lesmez, the chief of the Colombia's air force said that his forces would take a tough stance in stopping drug smugglers now that President Bush has authorised the resumption of US drug surveillance flights over Colombia. The surveillance flights were suspended two-and-half years ago after a US missionary plane was mistakenly shot down over Peru. Colombia was unable to continue effective operations against drug flights in the absence of US intelligence. Under new guidelines, only the commander of the Colombian Air force can give the order to shoot down a suspicious plane, and only if the plane has ignored radio warnings and warning shots from Colombian warplanes. Last year 38 illegal planes belonging to the rebel groups were shot down and destroyed.

(WOWT) - Last week, the state of Alabama carried out a first-of-its-kind execution. Kenneth Eugene Smith was put to death for a murder-for-hire killing in 1988, and his death marks the first to ever use nitrogen gas.
\n

\n
Alabama is one of just three states that has legalized the nitrogen hypoxia method for death to inmates, but Nebraska may soon be added to that list.
\n

\n
The last inmate to be put to death by the state of Nebraska is Carey Dean Moore; he robbed and killed two Omaha cab drivers in 1979.
\n

\n
His death by the state was more than five years ago now.
\n

\n

\n
Moore was the first Nebraska inmate to die by lethal injection, which is now the sole method of execution in the state.
\n

\n
But Nebraska state senator Loren Lippincott is seeking to change that.
\n

\n
The drugs that are used stateside are made by companies, some of which, refuse to sell those products to our correctional facilities, our prisons, he says.
\n

\n
Lippincott also has concerns about international drugs for lethal injection coming from China, as well as concerns about botched lethal injection procedures.
\n

\n

\n
However, Lippincott points to a solution.
\n

\n
Nitrogen eliminates and addresses those issues, he states.
\n

\n
Lippincott introduced LB970; a bill that would add nitrogen hypoxia to Nebraskas list of methods for capital punishment.
\n

\n
Its only ever been used in Kenneth Eugene Smiths sentence.
\n

\n

\n
The death penalty is the will of the Nebraska people. They voted for it in 2016, its not me, its not us, its not the legislature. Its the will of the people, and we need to honor that. Its law, Lippincott says. So what we need to do is, we need to do it in the most humane and effective way possible.
\n

\n
But that isnt a concern for everyone.
\n

\n
Humanely? What did they do to their victims? That wasnt humane, says Melissa Harris.
\n

\n
I think people who think lets have it humanely probably have not gone through what the families have gone through, she adds.
\n

\n

\n
Melissas daughter, Amber, was murdered in 2005.
\n

\n
At 12 years old, Amber Harris disappeared after getting off the school bus.
\n

\n
I always tried to have hope, but Ambers not one that would stay away from home. I was making her favorite meal that night. I knew shed come home, Melissa says. I knew something was wrong the next day.
\n

\n
It was six months before Ambers remains were found buried in Hummel Park.
\n

\n

\n
Her killer, Roy Ellis, was a sex offender who lived near the Harris. Ellis has now sat on death row for nearly 20 years.
\n

\n
At one point in time, before all this, I grew up in a wonderful little town and had never been around violence, let alone murder, says Melissa. So, I never really thought much about [the death penalty]. But as I get older, and I think of him sitting in there. Im retired now, but thats people, good taxpayers money. I realize it has to run the prison system. But, not for him to still sit in there and be comfortable.
\n

\n
Melissa is grateful and supportive of Lippincotts proposal and would like to see it pass.
\n

\n
If it does, shes hopeful there wont be more obstacles in the capital punishment process.
\n

\n

\n
Its time, its time to move forward. Yeah, I may not see it in my lifetime, but my children will and I have them to be grateful for because they have said theyll be there if this ever happens. But its time to move forward.
\n

\n
After Lippincotts proposal of LB970, an Omaha senator amended the bill.
\n

\n
Instead of nitrogen hypoxia, Senator Megan Hunt is suggesting a legislative firing squad, which, according to the amendment, means a firing squad composed of all members of the Legislature, who shall use firearms to shoot the convicted person.
\n

\n
Hunt is an opponent of the death penalty, and Lippincott says everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but maintains that the death penalty was reinstated by Nebraska voters in 206 after the legislature abolished it the year before.
\n

\n

\n
6 News reached out to Hunt for comment but did not receive a response.
\n

\n

\n
WOWT 6 News 10 p.m. Sunday newscast
\n
Copyright 2024 WOWT. Wide of on fire fighter searching 13. More of debris 14. Zoom-in to missile part STORYLINE Two cargo trucks carrying missile parts caught fire on an expressway in southern South Korea on Tuesday, but there were no casualties, an official said. Four trucks were carrying missile propellants when an overheated brake on one started the fire in a tunnel on an expressway near Daegu, about 300 kilometres (186 miles) southeast of Seoul, at 1420 local time (0520 GMT), according to the official of the city's fire prevention headquarters. The flames spread to the second truck behind it, but its cargo wasn't affected, he said. The drivers of the 15-ton trucks and other people in the tunnel quickly fled to safety and there were no injuries reported. The fire was put out about an hour later, the official said. However, the South Korean air force, which commissioned the transport of the parts to a civilian firm, gave a different account, saying only one truck caught fire. One fireman on site agreed, saying one truck was totally burnt while the other was fine because it was at the back. The air force also said the fuel inside the missile propellants had been burned up. In a statement, it admitted the propellants were flammable material, but stressed they do not explode, adding they were sorry for causing concern to people. The trucks were on their way to an air base in Daegu, carrying propellants for aging Nike missiles from a closed anti-aircraft missile base in Beolgyo, about 440 kilometres (273 miles) south of Seoul, South Korea's Yonhap news agency said.

Police Shotspotter Program (2014)
The Minneapolis City Council is expected to vote this week to provide additional funding to expand the police department's ShotSpotter program. The devices around the city pick up the sounds of gunshots and relay their exact locations to police, allowing officers to get to the scenes of crimes quicker. Police say the ShotSpotters have been responsible for solving murders and collecting evidence since they were put into operation in 2005. While the city keeps the number of devices and their locations confidential, Commander Scott Gerlicher of the Strategic Information Center with the Minneapolis Police Department says the new devices, if approved by council, will double the coverage area of North Minneapolis, where they are needed most. The city also utilizes about 200 surveillance cameras. While not directly integrated with ShotSpotter, when gunshots are heard through the system, officers can immediately turn a camera onto the scene if one is nearby. The city currently has a contract to keep the program running for approximately $300,000 over the next three years. Minneapolis City Council will vote on Friday to expand the program at a cost of an additional $300,000.

STILL of Jean Charles de Menezes on ID document STORYLINE The lawyer for the family of the innocent Brazilian man shot dead by British police who mistook him for a bombing suspect said on Wednesday that officers had little reason to believe he was a threat. Jean Charles de Menezes, a 27-year-old electrician, was shot eight times in an Underground train last month after police tailed him from a house that was under surveillance and believed linked to the failed July 21 bombings. British police had claimed that Menezes' clothing and behaviour aroused their suspicions and that he didn't obey an order to stop as officers tailed him into Stockwell subway station on July 22. Earlier witness reports said Menezes was wearing a heavy coat and vaulted the barriers at Stockwell station. But a British TV station reported on Tuesday, citing security footage, that Menezes entered the station at a normal walking pace, stopping to pick up a newspaper before boarding a train and taking a seat. The ITV News broadcast, citing an investigation report into the shooting, also said Menezes was wearing a light denim jacket when he was shot. The report obtained by ITV said while Menezes was shot eight times, a further three bullets were fired but missed. ITV said the documents came from an official investigation into Menezes' death. The Independent Police Complaints Commission, who have been charged with investigating the shooting, refused to comment on the veracity of the documents. Metropolitan Police said they could not make any comment while the police complaints commission investigation was ongoing.
HUDSON VALLEY MALL SHOOTER ON TAPE 2005
a man who peppered a busy shopping mall with a semi-automatic rifle will spend 32-yeas in prison for his wild shooting spree. robert bonelli Jr. walked through the Hudson Valley Mall in February of 2005 methodically firing off about 60 rounds. two people were injured before the man ran out of ammunition and was tackled. Bonelli told the judge he never intended to harm anyone and blamed years of drug use and depression as the things that made him lose it. the judge didn't buy the stories saying he even reloaded the weapon and that shows he was in full control of what he was doing. Prosecutors also found journal entries that read things like, "The lonely man strikes with absolute rage", and "attack the unsuspecting like cattle in the slaughterhouse."

Repeat of security camera video of baby STORYLINE: An incredible rescue in New York was caught on surveillance tape on Wednesday. A one-month-old baby was dropped by his mother out the window of her burning apartment in the Bronx and miraculously caught in-mid-air by nearby people, according to a report by US broadcaster ABC. The fire broke out in a third-floor apartment on Wednesday morning, ABC reported. The mother was not able to escape with the baby, because the fire was raging in the kitchen behind her, blocking her from the door and forcing her and her newborn baby up against the window, the report said. The apartment building's superintendent, told ABC he wasn't sure what the woman was holding outside the window until she let go. "She threw the baby across," said Felix Vazquez, "I ran in and just caught him." He said the baby was covered in black soot and was not breathing until he blew air into his lungs. Firefighters were able to save the mother, and both are now doing fine, ABC reported.

US Explosion - CCTV of fiery gas explosion earlier this month released
NAME: US EXPL 20091118I TAPE: EF09/1080 IN_TIME: 10:10:30:24 DURATION: 00:00:43:11 SOURCES: U.S. Chemical Safety Board Handout DATELINE: Utah - 4 November 2009 RESTRICTIONS: SHOTLIST: 1. Close Circuit Television (CCTV) showing wide shot of explosion at oil refinery, followed by flames and smoke STORYLINE: Newly released surveillance video shows the moment a fiery gas explosion ripped through a Utah oil refinery earlier this month. The US Chemical Safety Board on Tuesday released the video and its preliminary findings of what led to the November 4 blast at the Silver Eagle Refinery in Woods Cross. The blast damaged 10 homes but caused no serious injuries. Company officials last week heeded a recommendation from investigators to shut down the refinery until it's deemed safe to reopen. Investigators haven't made a final determination on what caused the blast. Preliminary findings indicate that the explosion happened when a 10-inch (25 centimetre) pipe failed catastrophically. The refinery in Woods Cross also had fires in 2003, 2005 and 2007, according to federal records. On January 12, four people were seriously burned at Silver Eagle when a 440-thousand gallon (1,67 million litre) storage tank caught fire and burned for 11 hours. Federal investigators said the ignition source may have been a gas heater or a refrigerator's electric outlet in a utility shed about 160 feet (49 metres) from the tank.
