Crowds at the scene STORYLINE A man arrested after a fatal shootout with police has admitted throwing a grenade at a rally in May where U.S. President George W. Bush was making a speech, the Georgian government said on Thursday. The government said the suspect made the admission in the hospital, where he is being treated for wounds suffered in the shootout that erupted in a village on the outskirts of the capital Tbilisi when police tried to arrest him late Wednesday. One policeman was killed in the shootout and the suspect, Vladimir Arutyunian, fled into a nearby woods. He was captured about an hour later and taken to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds. Bush and Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili were on the podium in front of a massive crowd in dowtown Tbilisi when the live grenade was thrown. The grenade landed less than 100 feet (30 meters) from the podium but did not explode. A preliminary investigation indicated the activation device deployed too slowly to hit the blasting cap hard enough, the FBI said. Georgia's Interior Minister, Vano Merabishvili , gave a briefing shortly after Wednesday's arrest, in which he expressed his condolences to the family of Zurab Kvlivishvili, the police officer killed during the shootout. He said Arutyunyan had also been wounded in the course of his arrest and said an investigation was underway as to what his motives for the crime might have been. Merabishvili had previously offered a reward of about 80,000 US dollars for information leading to the capture of the man responsible for the failed attack.

Wide of news conference STORYLINE A shootout between detectives inside a police station on the edge of Mexico City left a police commander dead and two people wounded on Thursday. The gun fight broke out before dawn when officers attempted to arrest another policeman, Eleazar Quintero, who is accused of heading a gang of kidnappers. Quintero, who was accompanied by his brother, drew out a pistol and shot police commander Juan Victor Rosas several times. Rosas later died from his injuries. After a drawn-out exchange of fire, officers shot and wounded Quintero. A man who washes the police cars was also shot and injured. Mexico State Attorney General Alfonso Navarrete Prida released a police video which showed the moment the shootout broke out when Quintero was being arrested. The footage shows commander Juan Victor Rosas approaching Quintero and being shot repeatedly until he falls out of the picture. Later, Quintero is shown being arrested by one of his former colleagues. Investigators learned about Quintero's criminal activities after two kidnapping gang members confessed after their arrest on Wednesday. This year, Mexico overtook Colombia to become the world leader in reported kidnappings, according to the Citizen Council for Public Safety, a private-sector think tank. Mexico state, which is home to many of Mexico City's sprawling suburbs, has one of the nation's highest kidnapping rates.

Paramedics carrying corpse in stretcher STORYLINE A shootout between police officers and suspected drug traffickers killed five people and injured nine others outside of Ciudad Juarez on the US-Mexican border on Wednesday. The officers were attempting to raid a safe house when they were ambushed by gunmen. A team of 26 municipal officers stormed into the Los Compadres neighbourhood outside the city around midday in search of suspects implicated in the Tuesday slaying of a police officer. The dead include Sergeant Miguel Angel Diaz and four male suspects linked to drug smuggling syndicates operating in Chihuahua and two other Mexican states. A female officer was shot four times in the chest, her colleague was hit three times and another officer sustained gunshot wounds to the legs and arms. A woman and two children were apparently injured in the crossfire, which occurred along a highway running southwest from Juarez to the community of Casa Grandes. An officer was killed in that attack and his partner was injured.
