Britain’s prisons 'wrecked by ideological vandalism', says former prison governor Ian Acheson
Britain’s prisons 'wrecked by ideological vandalism', says former prison governor Ian Acheson; Part 1 of 2 ENGLAND (via Internet): INT Professor Ian Acheson (Former prison officer and governor) interview SOT - (Re: situation in criminal system) Lock up far too many people with far too few prison staff / rampant drugs economy in Wandsworth and elsewhere Q: ON EARLY RELEASE OF PRISONERS - Criminal stupidity and ideological vandalism to remove so many frontline staff so fast from the prison service / not confident in releasing some of these people, some who will be violent / released into a probation service which has been slaughtered Q: MAY IT COST PEOPLE'S LIVES - Added to serious offenders now are hundreds, potentially a thousand or more people who I don't think we have sufficient supervisory power and control for / you need community surveillance which meets the risk / it's a very risky business Q: YOU EXPRESS OUTRAGE AND ARE A CONSERVATIVE SUPPORTER - It's absolutely right I can reconcile those two things / if you cut frontline staff by 26 per cent, which is in effect what happened between 2010 and 2016, you expect every metric of decency and safety to go into the skip, that is precisely what happened / senior managers ought to have said 'this is a crazy idea, and you're going to have to instruct me in writing to do it', and if they had anything about them, they'd have resigned Q: WHERE IS THE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR WHAT'S GOING WRONG - Whenever catastrophies happen in the prison service, there's an absolute void there / it is an indictment that the only way we know we often know what is happening in prisons is either through undercover reports, through media like yourself, or the accident of a random inspection of a prison, replete with managers presiding over total chaos / they've got to be got rid of.
