Hong Kong Ship - Asia's largest floating crane used to lift sunken Ukrainian vessel, bodies removed

Yellow vehicle carrying body drives away STORYLINE: Hong Kong police said on Monday that seven bodies have been recovered from the wreck of a capsized Ukrainian tugboat, over a month after it capsized in Hong Kong waters after colliding with a Chinese cargo ship. A spokesman said that officers found the bodies in the cabin of the sunken boat. A large salvage ship dispatched from southern Chinese city of Guangzhou has spent over two weeks trying to raise the vessel. The tugboat sank rapidly after it collided with the Chinese cargo ship Yao Hai in waters northwest of Hong Kong's outlying Lantau island in March. Six Ukrainians and a Chinese citizen were immediately rescued. Eighteen Ukrainian sailors were trapped in the capsized vessel's hull. Officials said rescue efforts have been hindered by strong currents and the depth of the wreck. Rescuers had planned to move the ship to shallower waters to ease rescue efforts but it wasn't immediately clear when the move will take place. The Neftegaz 67 had a history of safety problems and was detained by port authorities twice in 2003, in Hong Kong and San Francisco, according to the Internet shipping database Equasis. Inspectors reported problems with the 80-metre (264-foot) vessel's alarm signals, lifesaving devices, stability, structure and related equipment, according to Equasis. The cause of the accident has yet to be determined, but officials said weather conditions were reasonable at the time of the accident and neither ship was overloaded.

Tse bowing and leaving COURTS ASKED TO PASS TOUGHER SENTENCE ON POP STAR TSE A prosecutor argued in court Friday (8NOV02) that pop idol Nicholas Tse should spend time in prison and not just get off with community service for a plot to cover up the wreck of his Ferrari. Tse had been sentenced to 240 hours of community service after being convicted last month of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice when he let a chauffeur claim to have been behind the wheel after Tse crashed his Ferrari in March. Tse's sentence sparked accusations that he was being treated leniently because of his wealth and fame, and Hong Kong's Justice Department went back to court Friday to ask Magistrate Allen Wyeth to punish the 22-year-old Tse more severely. The magistrate wasn't expected to rule until next week on whether to impose a different sentence on Tse, one of Asia's hottest singing and film stars. Prosecutor Bernard Ryan argued that the crime was significant enough to put Tse in prison, though he did not immediately ask for any particular sentence. Ryan said Tse had not shown genuine remorse because he maintained his innocence throughout his trial, and Ryan said the star's relatively young age was not a good reason to let him off lightly. "A man of 22 is an adult," Ryan said. Defense lawyer Cheng Huan urged Wyeth to stick with his original punishment. "You have substantial judicial discretion over sentencing," Cheng argued. Tse made no comment as he entered the court, wearing a dark blue suit and silver tie and accompanied by his parents, the movie star Patrick Tse Yin and veteran actress Deborah Li. Tse appeared apprehensive on the way in but seemed relaxed in the courtroom. His previously collar-length hair looked uneven, having not grown back completely after being shaved close in a regulation jailhouse trim when he spent two weeks behind bars awaiting sentencing. No one was hurt when Tse crashed his car and it is unclear why he sought to avoid blame. The chauffeur who claimed to have been behind the wheel was sentenced to four months in prison, while a police officer who went along with the plot was sentenced to six months. Prosecutors are also seeking a tougher sentence for the policeman.

Street scene STORYLINE: Unusually high air pollution shrouded Hong Kong in thick brownish haze for the second day running on Friday, obscuring the skyline and cutting visibility. The foggy conditions are reported to have been the cause of eight ship collisions in the territory's waters. A 55 year old sailor died after a cargo vessel capsized in waters near the suburban Sai Kung area on Thursday night. The ship - a 20 metre (65-foot) long locally owned vessel - sank after it rolled over on its side and took on water, a Marine Department spokesman said. Two people were injured in the accident. Another sailor fell off a Chinese container ship that hit a larger cargo vessel, but he was plucked safely from the sea by rescuers aboard a marine police launch. The wreck left a hole in the smaller ship and five of its containers plunged into the waters off the suburban Tuen Mun area, a Marine Department spokesman said. Six other ships had minor collisions near the outlying island of Ma Wan and a pilot boat ran aground close to Hong Kong Island, but no injuries were reported, he said. On Thursday, visibility in Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour was reduced to about 2 nautical miles (3.7 kilometres). Authorities said pollution reached very high levels because a nearby typhoon created a weather pattern that trapped pollutants over the territory. Hong Kong's government warned people with heart and respiratory conditions to avoid staying outdoors.

HONK KONG: JET BURSTS INTO FLAME (2)
TAPE_NUMBER: EF99/0936 IN_TIME: 07:38:23 - 09:10:02 LENGTH: 03:17 SOURCES: APTN/ATV RESTRICTIONS: ATV = No Access Hong Kong/Taiwan/Internet FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: Cantonese/Nat Two people are dead and four more in a critical condition in Hong Kong, following what has been described as the worst air incident in the territory's history. Authorities are investigating the incident after a China Airlines jet coming from Thailand burst into flames, flipped upside down and slid down the runway at Hong Kong's new airport. Of the 313 survivors aboard the M-D-11, more than 200 were also injured, though most suffered minor casualties. The plane was trying to land during a tropical storm, which authorities believe is the likely cause of the crash. Hong Kong's aviation chiefs have launched an inquiry into why a China Airlines jet crash-landed in a tropical storm on Sunday. The plane flipped onto its back as it burst into flames. On Monday, the wreckage of the plane was still strewn across the runway at Chek Lap Kok airport. The airport's Chief Fire Officer told reporters how the plane was evacuated. SOUNDBITE: (English) "There was somebody who had previous training so he commanded the situation, telling the people to be calm, awaiting the door to be opened an then start evacuation, so within minutes all people came down." Q: And what was the scene were the passengers in a panic? "All on the ground." Q: How did they actually come out of the plane? "They jumped". SUPER CAPTION: Lau Shiu Lam, Chief Fire Officer At a press conference Hong Kong's Director of Civil Aviation said he was launching an investigation into the crash. SOUNDBITE: (English) "As to what caused the accident we will have to await the findings of the investigation, at this moment in time it is premature to speculate as to what might cause the accident." Q: Was it a freak accident? How would you describe it? "Well it's a sad occurrence. Nobody wants it to happen, it happened so we now have to look at what cause the accident and see what needs to be done to prevent a similar occurrence in future." SUPER CAPTION: Albert Lam, Hong Kong SAR Director of Civil Aviation Distraught relatives have gathered outside Princess Margaret Hospital in Hong Kong where victims of the crash were brought. The two fatalities were a Portuguese woman and a Taiwanese man. Officials praised the speedy response of rescue crews who had to perform their job in heavy winds and rain. They noted that out of 313 people who survived, 102 walked away uninjured and another 150 have already been discharged from hospitals after suffering minor injuries. A China Airlines spokesman says the flight from Bangkok was hit by a sudden, strong gust of wind as it neared the runway. The M-D-11 jet's right wing slammed into the ground, breaking off and sparking a fire as the airplane flipped over and came to rest on its back, with landing gear pointing to the sky. Eyewitnesses described a fireball on the runway after the Taiwanese M-D-11 jetliner crashed. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "I was eating in the departure area, then I saw the plane strike the ground when it tried to land. There was a streak of light and I thought at first it was traffic lights. Then I saw fire and heard a boom which was then followed by an explosion." SUPER CAPTION: Vox pop, Eyewitness Passengers describe a harrowing landing. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "Everyone shouted to see if anyone was trapped by fallen objects. There were kids on the plane. The plane was overturned, so this was the most important concern. It was important not to cause more injuries. Then it was known that some people were trapped and some were missing. It was very chaotic." SUPER CAPTION: Tam Chung Keung, Passenger The crew of flight C-I-6-4-2 had considered cancelling their scheduled stop in Hong Kong and flying straight through from Bangkok to Taipei because of the weather. Taiwanese officials said the winds appeared to have calmed enough to allow for a safe landing as the jet neared Hong Kong, so the pilot brought the airplane down after all. Hong Kong aviation officials said they were following accepted international procedures when they left Chek Lap Kok airport open during Tropical Storm Sam. They say it's always up to airlines to decide whether or not to attempt a landing. Authorities were on Monday investigating the incident. China Airlines has been struggling to improve its safety record after several crashes in recent years. Airline officials appeared devastated by Sunday's incident after having carried out a massive shakeup in pilot training and other aspects of their operations in an effort to become safer. The accident has raised questions about why an airplane would fly into Hong Kong during a typhoon that had shut down ferries, many buses and hundreds of other businesses. Chek Lap Kok was reopened early on Monday, although passengers were experiencing delays as airlines worked to clear out a backlog of traffic that developed while the airport was shut on Sunday night. A flight on Monday from Taipei, carrying relatives of crash victims and Taiwanese aviation and air safety experts, was forced back by heavy fog in Hong Kong. They took off after a delay of almost six hours. SHOTLIST: xfa Hong Kong - August 22-23, 1999 APTN 1. Various of wrecked plane on runway with emergency services 2. Close up of engine damage on black car, pan zoom out to side-panel damage on silver car STORYLINE About 70 vehicles slammed into each other on Tuesday in heavy snowfall on a motorway in northwestern Austria, killing one person and injuring at least 37 others, police said. Police in the province of Upper Austria said six of the injured people were seriously hurt. Police said the person who died was a 37-year-old Spanish woman who lived in Switzerland. Authorities said she was killed when her car slid out of control and was run over by a truck. Some victims were believed to be trapped in their vehicles and rescue efforts were hampered by the snow, police said. Uninjured witnesses at the scene were horrified by what they had seen, and felt very lucky to have escaped the carnage. "Thank God, yes, nothing happened to my car and I am also unharmed," said one man in his car. As a reporter asked him if he could celebrate a new birthday today the replied "yes" as he rubbed his eyes and cried. Another woman, holding a baby, said the crash site felt like a war zone. Police said the accident happened on the westbound carriageway of the A1 motorway between the towns of Seewalchen and St. Georgen, northeast of Salzburg. That section of the autobahn has been closed in both directions. The speed limit is 130 kilometres (80 miles) per hour.

Various of car carrying Karlheinz Schreiber (sitting in the back) arriving at entrance gate of Augsburg prison 20. Closing gate, journalists leaving 21. Exterior shot of Augsburg prison building STORYLINE Karlheinz Schreiber, a key figure in a political party financing scandal involving former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, was extradited to Germany from Canada to face criminal charges after losing a decade-long court battle. Monday's return of the 75-year-old former arms-industry lobbyist comes a month before a national election in which the conservative Christian Democratic Union, Kohl's party, now led by Chancellor Angela Merkel, is leading in polls. However, it was not expected to have much impact on the September 27 vote. Merkel became CDU leader in 2000 after strongly distancing herself from the scandal. Schreiber landed in Munich around 9:30 a.m. (0730 GMT, 3:30 a.m. EDT) on Monday, then was taken to a jail in nearby Augsburg, where prosecutors accuse him of bribery and tax evasion. On Tuesday, officials will read Schreiber the arrest warrant against him and then bring him before a judge, who will decide whether to keep him in custody pending a trial, Augsburg state court spokesman Karl-Heinz Haeusler said. Prosecutors have accused Schreiber and others of taking undeclared commissions from a deal in the early 1990s to deliver Fuchs armoured vehicles to Saudi Arabia. Schreiber, a dual German and Canadian citizen, was arrested in Canada in 1999 under a German warrant. He maintains the charges against him and his extradition from Canada are politically driven. Schreiber allegedly gave a cash donation in 1991 to the former treasurer of Kohl's Christian Democratic Union party, Walther Leisler Kiep. The allegation triggered a scandal that only deepened with Kohl's 1999 admission that he had personally accepted off-the-books, and therefore illegal, donations from supporters. Kohl was Germany's chancellor from 1982 to 1998. The party financing scandal tainted Kohl's reputation and led to a criminal investigation against the chancellor who united Germany in 1990. However, prosecutors in Bonn closed the case in 2001 without charging Kohl after he agreed to pay a 300,000 mark fine. Merkel won the party leadership in 2000 after becoming one of the first in her party to break with Kohl over the scandal. Polls show the CDU with a strong lead in polls before Germany's September 27 elections. Court officials and prosecutors said they hoped to move forward quickly with a trial. Yet prosecutor Reinhard Nemetz said a trial was unlikely to begin before the election.

TAPE: EF02/0846 IN_TIME: 14:10:54 DURATION: 5:44 SOURCES: APTN/BMG RESTRICTIONS: music video/performance rights must be cleared DATELINE: Brimingham. September 31, 2002 SHOTLIST 1. Music clip - 'The Long and Winding Road' by Will Young and Gareth Gates 2. SOUNDBITE Will Young: "We picked 'The Long And Winding Road' because Gareth and I did it on the show, the last Pop Idol, and had such a good response. We had never sung together because we were singing against each other, and I think our voices went really well together, even though we have got very different voices , together in harmonies they worked really well. And we just thought it would be thought it would be a really good song to do to finish off the while Pop Idol thing and give a fond farewell to it." 3. Music clip - 'The Long and Winding Road' by Will Young and Gareth Gates 4. SOUNDBITE Will Young: "I think being number one this time, it gets better and better actually, it doesn't get any worse that's for sure. No it feels really, I am really happy. I am quite amazed actually, it has all been a bit mad but it is great to get a number one hit." 5. Music clip - 'The Long and Winding Road' by Will Young and Gareth Gates 6. SOUNDBITE Will Young: "The thing with this album is that it brings out the tone in my voice, without sounding too arrogant, and that does sound arrogant. But that is what has been great about it because I can really bring out the richness in the microphone, so that is definitely one area of my singing I think. But then I wrote a song with Cathy Dennis, the last song I wrote and we had run out of time so we couldn't get it on the album. But we sing it on the tour, it is called 'Ticket To Love' and that is a very different kind of vibe, it points towards something I could do for the next album maybe ." 7. Will Young winning Pop Idol and singing 'Evergreen' 8. SOUNDBITE Will Young: "I didn't think at the beginning that I would be here now. I think when I was in the competition I just concentrated on just getting past each stage. It really was like that, the early stages were hell on earth, I don't mind saying it because it is true. But I didn't think that I would be sitting here now within 9 months talking about my album so it is pretty fantastic." 9. Live performance, Birmingham, Will Young singing 'Ticket To Love' 10. SOUNDBITE Will Young: "I am normally quite calm, it is the half an hour leading up to that 5 minutes that when I am a nervous wreck and I need to psyche myself up. And then I get very calm and I just want to get it over and done with so hopefully I will be alright. That is such a lie, I am really nervous before I go on stage." 11. Music clip - 'Evergreen' by Will Young 12. SOUNDBITE Will Young: "I think it is difficult to predict how successful people will be from competitions for programmes like Pop Stars, Pop Rivals, Fame Academy, Pop Idol. I think certainly Gareth and I couldn't have predicted, or any of the last ten, how we would have done. It is very difficult for me to predict how well people will do in the future. But you can only wish them the best of luck." 13. Music Clip 'Evergreen' WILL YOUNG IN CHARTS FROM NOW ON? He's sharing the UK number one on the singles chart, and now WILL YOUNG has his eye on the album chart as well, as his debut solo collection 'FROM NOW ON' hits the shops on monday (7th October). The winner of the UK reality TV show 'Pop Idol' is currently at the top of the single chart with 'The Long and Winding Road,' a duet with the popular runner-up of the televised competition, Gareth Gates. The single beat Oasis to the top spot, forcing the Gallagher brothers to settle for number two with their latest, 'Little By Little/She Is Love.' Young explains he and Gates chose to record their cover as the two had sung it together at series finale, winning a warm response from the audience. It is also their way of closing the book on the experience of auditioning their way to the charts on the small screen. The new album includes the duet, as well as Young's other hit singles 'Evergreen' and 'Light My Fire.' Other tracks include several written especially for the album by Young with top songwriter Cathy Dennis (who also worked on Kylie Minogue's 'Can't Get You Out of My Head). The team of other writers include the legendary Bert Bacharach, who co-wrote 'What's In Goodbye' with Cathy Dennis. Young says the 13-song collection 'brings out the tone' of his voice, but is already giving fans a taste of his next album when he plays live. One song, 'Ticket to Love' was written too late on in the production process to be included on 'From Now On,' so Young has been singing it on tour instead, and says it may well represent the style of his next collection. While Young admits he would never have predicted his own success when he started out competing on 'Pop Idol' - and won't be drawn into guessing how contestants on other reality TV pop contests might fare. The UK has seen a wealth of reality TV shows where the cameras follow open auditions through to the launch of a new career as a star, including the current Pop Rivals, Fame Academy. Hear'Say, the group formed from winners of the first series to take up the idea, Pop Stars have just announced their split. The formula has been successful elsewhere around the world too - at least in terms of viewing figures. Several new chart stars have popped up as a result. One of the more recent is Kelly Clarkson, winner of American Pop Idol. She too has broken records with the release of her debut single. Young performed with her on the finale of the Stateside competition - and now the pair are reported to be planning to repeat the Will and Gareth magic, by releasing a duet together. Will Young is currently on an arena tour with Gareth Gates, with supporting act fellow Pop Idol contestant Zoe Birkett. The 14 date 'Will and Gareth' tour hits Wembley Arena in London next week, followed by concerts in Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow.
