And opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi called for another mass rally on Thursday in defiance of Iran's most powerful figure, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has urged the nation to unite behind the Islamic state. In Seoul, South Korea on Wednesday about 100 Iranians gathered ahead of a match between South Korea and Iran. At least five Iranian football players wore green bands around their wrists or arms during the World Cup qualifying match in an apparent protest against the disputed election at home. The players, including captain Mehdi Mahdavikia, wore green - the signature colour of Mousavi - in an apparent show of support. But by the second half, some had removed the green bands, which are not a regular part of their uniforms, amid speculation that they were ordered by their coach to do so. Mahdavikia kept his band on even during the second half. In Paris, France hundreds of protesters gathered to express their support for the opposition demonstrations in Iran. The protesters sang songs and held banners reading "Where is my vote?" In Rome, Italy about 300 people gathered to show solidarity with the pro-reformist demonstrations in Iran and to express their concerns about the handling of the disputed election results. The demonstration was organised by the Radical Party, a tiny party that champions human rights, and by a leftist newspaper, Il Riformista, or 'The Reformer'. Demonstrators carried banners with messages such as "Where is my vote?" and "Free Iran". Davood Karimi, who is President of the Iranian Political Refugees Association in Italy, said the Iranian elections were "a farce". "Above all we want to say stop such despotic and obscurantist tyranny of the Ayatollahs," he said. In Washington US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said it was for the people of Iran to determine how they resolve the protest surrounding the outcome of the recent disputed election. "The people of Iran deserve the right to have their voices heard and their votes counted. The outcome of any election should reflect the will of the people," Clinton said. However, in her joint appearance with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman she avoided any appearance of endorsing either incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad or Mousavi, who has called himself the winner of the June 12 election. Clinton also spoke about the State Department's request to the online social networking site that it postpone maintenance so that Iranians could continue using the service to communicate. The White House has denied that move or any other represented meddling by the US, described by state-run media in Iran as "intolerable". It was raised "largely because of that larger policy stimulus that is larger than expected," the World Bank's Louis Kuijs, who authored the report, said. The 586 (b) billion dollar plan calls for shielding China from the global slump by pumping money into the economy through higher spending on public works. "China will be able to continue to grow at a respectable rate next year but we don't really foresee any very significant pickup in the rate of growth next year," he added. Obama has refused to take any concrete steps toward a repeal of a policy that bans gays and lesbians from serving openly in the military, even though as a candidate he pledged to scrap the Clinton-era rules. He similarly has refused to step in and block the dismissal of gays and lesbians who face courts-martial for disclosing their sexual orientation, arguing that the only lasting ways would be for Congress to act. Various of bodies recovered from the ocean being taken off helicopter to be transported to mortuary STORYLINE: Autopsies have revealed fractures in the legs, hips and arms of Air France disaster victims, injuries that - coupled with the large pieces of wreckage pulled from the Atlantic - strongly suggest the plane broke up in the air, experts said on Wednesday. With more than 400 bits of debris recovered from the ocean's surface, the top French investigator expressed optimism about discovering what brought down Flight 447, but he also called the conditions - far from land in very deep waters - "one of the worst situations ever known in an accident investigation." A spokesman for Brazilian medical examiners told The Associated Press on Wednesday that fractures were found in autopsies on an undisclosed number of the 50 bodies recovered so far. The official spoke on condition he not be named due to department rules. The six most recently recovered bodies were taken to the mortuary in Recife on Wednesday for identification. The pattern of fractures was first reported on Wednesday by Brazil's O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, which cited unnamed investigators. The paper also reported that some victims were found with little or no clothing, and had no signs of burns. Searchers from Brazil, France, the United States and other countries are methodically scanning the surface and depths of the Atlantic for signs of the Airbus A330 that crashed May 31 after running into thunderstorms en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. All 228 people aboard were killed. Brazilian Air Force Colonel Henry Munhoz said in a news conference on Wednesday that several body parts, as well as pieces of the plane and luggage were found in the search area by the French amphibian ship, Mistral. Munhoz did not provide further details, and Brazilian Captain Giucemar Tabosa Cardoso said "a significant" number of body parts had been retrieved from the ocean. Still missing are the plane's flight data and voice recorders, thought to be deep under water. French-chartered ships are trolling a search area with a radius of 50 miles (80 kilometres), pulling US Navy underwater listening devices attached to 19,700 feet (6,000 metres) of cable. The black boxes send out an electronic tapping sound that can be heard up to 1.25 miles (two kilometres) away, but these locator beacons will begin to fade after just two more weeks. Without the black boxes to help explain what went wrong, the investigation has focused on a flurry of automated messages sent by the plane minutes before it lost contact; one suggests external speed sensors had iced over, destabilising the plane's control systems. Air France has replaced the sensors, called Pitot tubes, on all its A330 and A340 aircraft, under pressure from pilots who feared a link to the accident. Brazil's Federal Police and state medical authorities in Recife who are overseeing the autopsies said in a statement that two French investigators, a dental expert and a doctor, had been following the examinations as observers since June 10. Health official Jorge Alchaer said 1,219 passengers and 460 crew members of Ocean Dream were still on board. The ship moored off Venezuela's Margarita Island, a popular Caribbean destination. Ocean Dream is managed by Spanish tour operator Pullmantur but the passengers' nationalities were not immediately known. Three crew members tested positive for swine flu during the cruise and eleven more are being examined after showing symptoms. Venezuela has reported 60 cases of swine flu. The latest WHO report, released on Friday, said 74 countries have reported 29,669 cases of swine flu, including 145 deaths. Fatalities had occurred in eight countries in the Americas: Mexico, the United States, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and Guatemala. Last week, the WHO declared the flu a pandemic, and said it expected further cases - and deaths - to occur as the pandemic plays out over the next few years. The shipment was inspected with dogs after an x-ray scan detected abnormalities. "In brief, after opening up the shark carcasses, packages appeared that were perfectly wrapped and sealed in rectangles. The authorities were informed that they had found some kind of white dust, which appeared to be cocaine," said Navy commander, Eduardo Villa. The seizure totalled 870 packets, weighing 893,925 kilograms, according to the Secretary of the Navy's office. The boat came from Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica. On Wednesday, eight suspected members of the "La Familia" cartel were arrested in Mexico state, accused of drug dealing and extorting business owners. More than 10,800 people have been killed by drug violence since Mexican President Felipe Calderon deployed 45-thousand troops to confront the cartels at the beginning of his presidency in December 2006. Still photo of barrel monster sculpture STORYLINE: When Joseph Carnevale chopped up three stolen orange and white traffic barrels from a construction site to create a massive sculpture of a roadside monster thumbing a ride, the North Carolina college student said he saw it as a form of street art. Raleigh, North Carolina, police just saw vandalism. They dismantled the 10-foot (three-metre) "barrel monster" and arrested Carnevale. Hundreds of online supporters want the charges dropped and the publicity has turned the history major and part-time construction worker into a local celebrity. Even the construction company has become a fan, and wants the 21-year-old to create a replica of the figure that led to his arrest on June 10. "It's surprising how many people have called attention to it," Carnevale said. The college junior hadn't spent much time planning when he set out the night of May 31 and snatched the barrels from the site near the North Carolina State University campus where he studies. He went back to his Raleigh apartment and in an hour and a half returned to the site to assemble the freshly painted pieces before driving away. What emerged was a hulking figure that seemed to extend a thumb, seeking a ride from passing cars. The next morning Raleigh Police dismantled the creation and took the pieces in for evidence while they searched for the perpetrator. Although photos quickly spread on the Internet featuring the "barrel monster," it was a North Carolina State University newspaper article that offered enough clues to lead police to a Web site that identified Carnevale. Police charged him with larceny and destruction of property, both misdemeanours, and he's scheduled to appear in court next month. Carnevale, an Indianapolis native, prides himself on his street art, but said he's most interested in guerrilla photography - making art and snapping images from restricted locations. His apartment walls serve as a canvas, covered in various hues of paint, with images on the walls and doors of sharks, hollow skulls and even Gandhi. His 1997 Volkswagen Jetta is almost completely covered in hot-glued beer bottle caps. Carnevale has made other street art pieces with stolen barrels, including an alligator and caricatures with small arms. Hamlin Associates, the construction company whose barrels were turned into a monster, doesn't want to press charges and Carnevale is weighing up an offer from the company to reconstruct the monster at their offices in Climax, North Carolina. Raleigh police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan said the charges won't be dropped, despite the company's stance. Carnevale said he's not sure what he'll do next, though he's interested in creating a T-Rex sculpture out of barrels. Five German Shepherd puppies cloned from a dog named Trakr were delivered to owner James Symington, a former police officer from Canada, who now lives in Los Angeles. Before Trakr died in April at the age of 16, Symington entered a competition sponsored by the California company BioArts International that offered to clone a pet dog for free. It usually costs about 144-thousand US dollars to clone an animal. Symington won the competition by writing an essay about Trakr and why his dog was so exceptional. He wrote that he and Trakr travelled to New York after the 9/11 attacks and that the dog helped find a woman who was still alive under the rubble of the collapsed World Trade Center. She was said to be the last survivor found at the site. During his career as a police search-and-rescue dog, Trakr was credited with hundreds of arrests and recovered more than one (m) million dollars in stolen goods. BioArts said it cloned Trakr in collaboration with a laboratory in South Korea and that the procedure was led by the doctor who performed the world's first canine cloning in 2005. In order to clone Trakr, doctors at the lab said they replaced the genes in eggs from unrelated dogs with genes from the German Shepherd, stimulated the resulting "couplets" to develop into embryos, then transferred the embryos to dogs who served as surrogate mothers. After normal pregnancies, the surrogate mums gave birth to puppies that the scientists say are genetically identical to Trakr. The first pup was born on December 8, 2008 and the last on April 4, 2009. All were born and weaned in South Korea and all are in excellent health, said BioArts. The biotech startup is based in the San Francisco Bay area and has primary scientific labs in Beijing, custom micro-engineering operations in London and has key scientific partnerships in Seoul and other areas. Various of police on dive boat STORYLINE: Australian prosecutors said on Thursday that they will appeal for stronger punishment for an American man who was sentenced to serve one year in prison for manslaughter in the death of his wife during a honeymoon scuba diving trip. David Gabriel Watson, of Birmingham, Alabama, was sentenced earlier this month to serve one year of a four-and-a-half year sentence for the 2003 death of his wife during a trip to Australia's Great Barrier Reef. He was to stand trial in the Queensland state Supreme Court for murder, which carried a potential sentence of life in prison, until the prosecution accepted the guilty plea to the lesser charge. "I have formed the view that this sentence is manifestly inadequate and the state will therefore lodge an appeal against the sentence in the Queensland Court of Appeal," Queensland Attorney General Cameron Dick told state parliament on Thursday. Christina Mae Watson, married just 11 days, drowned while diving with her husband on the Great Barrier Reef. Her body was found on the ocean floor. Coroner David Glasgow formally charged Watson with murder last June. Glasgow said it was likely Watson killed his wife by holding her underwater and turning off her air supply. The coroner said a possible motive was her modest life insurance policy. Prosecutors said the manslaughter plea was accepted on the basis that the 32-year-old Watson, trained to rescue panicked divers, failed in his duty as her dive buddy by not giving her emergency oxygen. They said Watson allowed his wife to sink to the ocean floor without attempting to retrieve her, and he did not inflate her buoyancy vest or remove weights from her belt. Watson, an experienced diver, had said in videotaped police interviews that 26-year-old Christina, a novice diver, started having trouble a few minutes into their dive. He said he decided to go for help rather than attempt a rescue himself. A fellow diver told Glasgow's inquest last year he saw Watson engaged in an underwater "bear hug" with his petite wife, after which he headed to the surface while she sank to the ocean floor. Watson told police his wife knocked his mask off and then sank too quickly for him to retrieve her.
