After 45 years of closure, Argentina reopens embassy in Bangladesh
DHAKA, BANGLADESH - FEBRUARY 27: Argentina on Monday reopened its embassy in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka after 45 years of closure. Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Andres Cafiero inaugurated the new embassy in the upscale area of Banani, where Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam and other diplomats and officials were also present. “This is the stepping stone to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations, not only diplomatically but also culturally,” the Cafiero said. The Argentine Embassy in Dhaka was closed in 1978 by the military junta that ruled the Latin American nation at the time. Alam, for his part, said that with the opening of the embassy, bilateral trade and investment between the two countries would be increased. According to a report published by the state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha news agency, the bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Argentina was $765 million in 2022. During his three-day trip to Bangladesh, Cafiero will also meet Bangladeshi Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen and Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi. He will also visit the Bangladesh Football Federation. Thousands of Argentinian people commemorate victims of 1976 military coup
BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - MARCH 24: Thousands of Argentinian people took to the streets on Thursday, March 24, which marked the 46th anniversary of the 1976 military coup People marched to the Plaza de Mayo (the May square) mourning victims of a military dictatorship who were detained and killed. People held banners displaying pictures of 30,000 people who were detained and disappeared during a dark chapter of Argentine history. The group included relatives of the children who disappeared. They are still seeking to identify children who were adopted during the dictatorship. Young children whose parents were murdered were adopted and never informed of their biological parents. After the dictatorship ended in 1983, advancements in DNA technology have helped reunite children with their biological parents. A military coup overthrew President Isabel Peron and installed a military junta on March 24, 1976. Around 30,000 people were killed by state forces during the dictatorship, according to rights groups. The majority were students, union leaders or political dissidents. Those in charge considered them “subversives.” Many were tortured before being killed and thrown from planes into the Río de La Plata estuary or the Atlantic Ocean. After the dictatorship, Argentina enacted an amnesty, ruling those who had committed alleged crimes would not be prosecuted. But in 2003 the country overturned amnesty and several influential figures during the dictatorship were convicted of crimes against humanity.
