Fairey in studio 10. Magazine cover showing Obama and McCain designed by Fairey 11. SOUNDBITE: (English) Shepard Fairey, artist: "My idea was to make the image of Obama pervasive and hopefully he would get some cultural traction. I mean that may sound not very intellectual or lofty but I think a lot of aspects in politics actually aren't, and I think that to try to cut through the clutter and get people to find out more about Obama was the ultimate goal because I think he does have substance and merit." New York, NY 12. Various of Obama T-shirts being sold on street 13. SOUNDBITE: (English) Arianna Ratner, Vox pop: "It reminds me of the Che Guevara shirts and stuff like that. He'll be an icon in the future, even if he wasn't elected I think he would be. I think his face has been, I mean I see it everywhere, so, yeah I think he's been, he's just become a pop icon." 14. Close-up of lithograph on T-shirt 15. SOUNDBITE: Jodie Patterson, Vox pop: "It will become iconic, I think it's a face that we haven't seen before in politics and it's refreshing for us but it's a face that many of us have seen in our families, so it's really nice to see someone that looks like someone that we know closely and dearly in a political role." 16. Woman folding Obama T-shirt 17. Obama T-shirt for sale STORYLINE: The pop appeal of Barack Obama was sculptured, in part, by a lithograph of the now president-elect, which went on to become a wildly popular poster. Back in May, getting permission from the campaign first, Los Angeles street artist Shepard Fairey chose a photo of the candidate gazing ahead, then used the colours red, white and blue to create his image, underlined by the word, "HOPE." The Obama image created by Fairey is ubiquitous, and appears on tee shirts, buildings, and street banners across the country. Fairey said he wanted to spark the curiosity of people who did not know much about Obama in order to encourage them to find out about the candidate. He said he made the image appear "hopeful and patriotic". Fairey said that when he was making the image, he wrestled with the idea of putting someone on a pedestal, but did not want the poster to lead to idol worship. Fairey said he does not feel that creating an image of Obama should suggest the man is beyond criticism. He said his goal was to make Obama's image pervasive. According to the artist, the Obama campaign contacted him about two weeks after he first created the "Hope" image, and asked him to create a poster specifically for the campaign. Fairey then created the "Change" poster, followed by the "Vote" poster. An Obama supporter in New York said the president-elect had become a pop icon. Arianna Ratner said the tee shirt reminded her of the popular shirts bearing the image of revolutionary Che Guevara.

Wide of dos Anjos campaigning in street STORYLINE: At least eight candidates running in local elections in Brazil have chosen to be known as "Barack Obama" on the electoral ballot. Due to a quirk in Brazilian electoral law, candidates can put any name they want on the ballot, as long as it isn't offensive. The United States Illinois senator and presidential candidate is hugely popular in Brazil. The prospect of a black US president has generated enthusiasm across the country, where more people call themselves black than anywhere except Nigeria. Many Brazilian candidates were hoping to muster some of Obama's popularity into office. Claudio Henrique dos Anjos, who's running for mayor of Belford Roxo on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, is one such candidate, taking the name Barack Obama de Belford Roxo. Dos Anjos decided to run for mayor last November after people said he looked like Obama, and knew the name recognition couldn't hurt. Across the city, his campaign posters endorse him as "Claudio Henrique - Our Barack Obama." "He has influenced our campaigning, not only because he is the first Black candidate (running for President in the United States) but because he fought for his dreams and believed in his dreams," dos Anjos said, sitting in his campaign headquarters. Hoping to become the first black mayor in Belford Roxo, dos Anjos made parallels between his competition and that of Obama's. "We only have McCains here," he said. "Belford Roxo became a city nearly twenty years ago, and since then, there has only been one political group that is constantly in and out of power." As dos Anjos continued to campaign on the streets on Thursday, one woman said she would back the candidate for his youthful appeal. "He is my mayor," she said. "I like his ideas and I like the thought of having someone young in power." Dos Anjos said that if he and Obama both win their campaign, he would celebrate by inviting the Illinois senator to his mother's house for a meal. "I would invite Barack Obama to have a feijoada in Dona Celia's house," referring to Brazil's national dish of rice, beans and stewed meat. Brazilian elections will be held on October 5th.

Children holding mock dead bodies of Palestinian children STORYLINE A group of hardline students on Tuesday set fire to posters of US President-elect Barack Obama during an angry protest in the Iranian capital, Tehran. The protesters, enraged by what they see as the President-elect's tacit support for Israel's offensive in Gaza, chanted "death to Obama" in front of the Swiss embassy which represents the United States' interest in Iran. The students then set fire to large posters of Obama, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Israeli Foreign Minister, Tzipi Livni. Student leader Esmaiel Ahmadi warned Obama that he needed to stop his "support for Israel" and pull troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan or he risked becoming as hated a figure as President George W Bush. More than one thousand women and children rallied on Wednesday in a stadium in Tehran in protest at the killing of women and children in Gaza. They carried mock dead bodies of children killed in Israel's offensive. Israel launched the onslaught in Gaza on December 27, it says, to stop the ruling Hamas militant group from firing rockets into southern Israel. The offensive has killed more than 940 Palestinians, half of them civilians, amongst them scores of children, according to Palestinian hospital officials. The toll included 11 Palestinians killed on Wednesday, medical officials said. Thirteen Israelis have also been killed since the offensive began, four by rocket fire from Gaza, according to Israeli officials.

Wide of staff stacking chairs 25. Close up of American Israeli flags STORYLINE Israel and the West Bank were preparing on Monday ahead of US President Barack Obama's visit later this week - it would seem he is likely to have a warmer welcome from Israelis than Palestinians. In the West Bank city of Bethlehem, some people gathered to throw shoes and tear down a poster of Obama. After suffering disappointments during the first Obama administration, Palestinians see little reason for optimism in his new term. Palestinians vandalised a banner bearing Obama's image. They tore it down, hurled shoes at it and spray painted it with swastikas. A taxi and another vehicle drove over it before it was set on fire in the West Bank town of Bethlehem Obama arrives in Israel on Wednesday and heads to the West Bank Thursday. The banner with Obama's picture was among many hung by activists, asking the president to take note of the lack of 3G phone frequencies in the West Bank. Israeli authorities control cellular networks there and they have not granted Palestinian telecommunication companies 3G. The Palestinians have long felt aggrieved by the US, accusing it of being biased toward Israel. Iran, Syria and Middle East peace will be on the agenda for talks, while Nadav Tamir, a foreign policy advisor to the Israeli president said the issue of Jonathan Pollard would also be raised. Pollard was convicted of spying for Israel on the United States and sentenced to 28 years in prison. "President Obama knows that this is an issue which all Israelis feel very strongly about," Tamir said, adding that Israeli President Peres "would like to represent the Israeli people in presenting the issue and find a solution to the situation of Jonathan Pollard." But in an interview with Israeli television, Obama said he had "no immediate plans" to free Pollard. Obama is scheduled to arrive in Indonesia in the coming week as part of his 10-day Asian tour which also takes in India, South Korea and Japan. Protesters waived placards and posters criticising Obama and US policies with several demonstrators heard chanting "Reject Obama!" The rally was organised by the Islamic organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia, who recently held a simalir rally outside the presidential palace. The group is part on an international pan-Islamic organisation and have been consistent critics of the US policy in the Middle East. "We're going to change our assessment of Obama only when Obama withdraws all the American troops from Iraq and Afghanistan and stops the attacks in the border region of Pakistan and Afghanistan and stops the blind support for Israel," Hizb Tahrir spokesman Ismail Yusanto said Sunday. President Obama is currently in India and is scheduled to touch down in Jakarta on Tuesday. Since taking office, he has already twice postponed visits to Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, where he spent four years as a child.
