Afghans who temporarily took refuge in Albania want to live in US or Canada
TIRANA, ALBANIA - SEPTEMBER 01: Afghans who escaped from the Taliban and took refuge in Albania want to go to the US or Canada for a new life. After the Taliban's rapid takeover of the country, Afghans who worked for the US-backed coalition, the ousted Afghan government, international organizations and the anti-Taliban media have left their country to save their lives or for a better life. Albania, the first of the Balkan countries to grant temporary asylum to Afghans whose final destinations are the US or third countries, began to host hundreds of Afghans who came in convoys. The first convoy arrived in the country on Aug. 27 and the government authorities have settled the Afghans in the cities of Durres and Lesh, as well as some student hostels in the capital Tirana. Aziz Kosan, who had worked as a researcher at a non-governmental organization in Afghanistan, is one of the Afghans who took refuge in Albania with his wife. “Afghans who escaped from the Taliban and took refuge in Albania want to go to the US or Canada for a new life. I was training young Afghan women on how to write a research paper on how to participating in policy, policymaking, policy discussions. I was working with the Afghan government as well for a few years in the field of security and defense,” he said. On the process to immigrate to the West, he said they filled some forms to take refuge in the US and Canada. He said: “We are hoping to get that. We hope to reach Canada or the US to live there for the rest of our lives, perhaps.” Fatime Ibrahimi, another of the Afghans who want to immigrate to the US or Canada, said she does not think to live in Albania. “I had worked as a finance and administration officer. I feel very good, safe and here is a good place. I prefer to live in Canada or the USA,” she said. (Footage by Olsi Shehu /Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)
Afghan immigrants temporarily staying in Albania hope to reach, US and Canada
TIRANA, ALBANIA - SEPTEMBER 10: The rapid takeover of Afghanistan by the Taliban has caused the emigration of large numbers of Afghans who work in state institutions, international organizations, and the media, as well as students. Hundreds of Afghans recently arrived in Albania, which is the first of the Balkan countries to grant them temporary asylum until they are directed to their final destination, the U.S., Canada, and other countries. The first convoy of Afghan immigrants arrived in Albania on August 27, and they were settled in student dormitories in the capital Tirana, and the cities of Dirac and Lech. The Afghans began a new life in the places designated for them on the campuses. They cooperate with the Albanian authorities in registration and all other procedures, while their children spend their time playing around. Aziz Qoshan, a 32-year-old Afghan immigrant, told Anadolu Agency Video News (AAVN) about his work in Afghanistan, his new life in Albania, and his plans. Qoshan said they are not planning to stay in Albania because of the language barrier, and that they have filled out an asylum application to the United States and Canada and hope to be accepted, and live there. “We hope to reach to Canada or to the U.S., to live there for the rest of our lives,” he said.
