UNWANTED GUY RUNS (2007)
A pickup truck won't pull over on a Texas turnpike just outside the town of Converse. The officer tried to initiate a traffic stop for speeding just over the limit. But, the man took off as soon as he saw the officer, rocketing from 40 to 90 mph in a matter of seconds. Now, he's leading the officer through the streets of Converse, recklessly running stop signs, slamming into curbs and peeling around corners. He leads the chase to the outskirts of town, hitting a dirt road and heading into the city park. When he gets to a locked gate, he simply crashes through it. The truck kicks up rocks and clouds of dust as it fishtails down the dirt road. Soon, he runs out of road. The truck stops at the edge of a 20 foot embankment, the driver gets out and immediately jumps off the edge. The lead officer goes after him, but slips on the way down. The driver gets away, but his freedom doesn't last long. Officers find his ID in the truck and simply arrest him at work the next day. He's charged with EVADING ARREST, all for mistakenly thinking he was wanted for an outstanding warrant.
COP ON A ROLL! 2004
Police cruiser camera video documented what happened five years ago when Colchester Police Officer Jim Roy pulled over a motorist for speeding on Lakeshore Drive. After the cars stop, the video shows that as Roy gets out of his car, his cruiser slowly begins to roll forward and picks up speed until his cruiser rear-ends the stopped car. The accident caused very minor damage. But the motorist, Susan Fay, had been headed to her chiropractic appointment for treatment for her longtime serious back injuries. She sued Colchester. She claimed the collision made her back problems much worse. This week the case went to jury trial. She was seeking nearly a $1 million from the town of Colchester in compensation and damages. She declined comment for our story but the trial was recorded by the court. "After the car accident, the pain continued to, it changed and it increased over some time," Fay testified. "It feels very different like there's actually a knife going in right here. I can't describe it. It's burning. It's deep. And it's really knife-like." Fay produced doctors and medical bills to support her claims. Colchester produced one medical expert who disagreed. After five hours of deliberation the jury decided Colchester should pay Fay $340,000. "My original thought was I was wondering why this going to trial at all? It seemed to be a fairly minor incident," said Lee Carpenter, one of the jurors. Carpenter says the deliberations were heated because the juror opinions ranged from a million dollars to zero. In the end they struck the $340,000 compromise. Carpenter said, "As the evidence was presented, there was a lot of evidence brought forward that should that there was damage done to this woman after the fact of the accident." A small accident that produced an unusually big jury award for the state of Vermont. Calls to Colchester town officials for comment were not returned. The town's insurance carrier, not the taxpayers, is responsible for paying the award.

Chase with no Light, Sirens - 2009
A Lee County Sheriff's deputy was disciplined for breaking the rules during a high-speed chase in early January. Dash cam video shows the pursuit, which reached speeds of well over 100 miles an hour. Deputy Thomas Chappell's dash camera recorded the five minute pursuit. At times, the chase reached 130 miles per hour. WATCH THE VIDEO (PLAYS AT RIGHT) During most of the chase, Chappell didn't use his emergency lights or siren. "Clearly it's a violation of sheriff's office policy and procedure," said Tony Schall of the Lee County Sheriff's Office. An internal investigation found Deputy Chappell guilty of neglect of duty. The three year veteran of the sheriff's office reported seeing Antonio Domenech going about 100 mph on US 41 near Island Park in south Fort Myers about 2:20 am on January 4th. The deputy turned on his dash cam while trying to catch the motorcycle. The majority of the footage shows Chappell going 130 miles per hour- changing lanes and passing cars without emergency lights or sirens to warn the public. Once he did turn on his lights, almost 10 miles later- the motorcycle slowed down, lost control and crashed. You can see the driver jump on the hood of the deputy's car and try to run away. Chappell used a taser on him- but Domenech kept resisting. The deputy used the taser again, yet Domenech still managed to get away. With the assistance of backup, Domenech was caught and taken to jail. The sheriff's office says Chappell shouldn't have pursued Domenech without permission from his sergeant, without emergency lights and sirens, while passing cars without, "due regard for the safety of the public." "It's just a safety issue so people, on-coming traffic have more of a visibility factor," said Schall. Chappel was suspended for one week and transferred out of the traffic unit. He is now a district patrol deputy.

MAN SHOOTS AT COP, GETS SHOT (2008)
Police say it all started when Louis Avrin, 36, of Caldwell allegedly robbed the Brookshire Brothers grocery store at gunpoint. According to police, Avrin pointed a gun at several employees, saying he had 16 bullets and would fire them if he didn't get what he wanted. Police say he got away with $5,000 in cash. Officials say Avrin then walked out of the store and car-jacked a woman at gunpoint. He then allegedly took police on a high-speed chase. Caldwell Police Officer Cougan Hignight was called to the scene and quickly found himself in a high speed pursuit. Caldwell Police Chief Paul Lilly soon joined in the chase. One that took both officers down winding roads and through a field. However, neither officer expected what happened next. Avrin crashed the stolen vehicle into a tree then fired, hitting Officer Hignight in the arm. "He was getting out of his car after he saw the man pointing the gun," Deputy Chief Daniel McElroy with the Caldwell Police Department said. "He got out, the bullet came through the windshield and struck him, it ended up in his back." Highnight then fired back 10 times, Lilly fired four. Avrin was shot three times, one bullet skimmed his face and nose, one hit him in the hip, the third shot hit his neck and offered a fatal blow.

A natural gas explosion leveled a home in New Jersey, injuring 15 people, two seriously, most of them utility workers trying to locate the source of a gas leak. The explosion was captured on video by a dashcam in a police car parked down the street from the home in Stafford, N.J. No one was in the home where the explosion occurred and about 75 residents in the neighborhood had been evacuated because of the strong smell of gas. Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the blast, which one witness said "felt like a bomb." seven gas company employees were injured and two were airlifted to a trauma center in Atlantic City, Stafford Police Capt. Thomas Dellane said. One of the utility company employees was listed in critical condition and the other was in critical but stable condition. Five other employees had non-life-threatening injuries. Six Stafford firefighters and two EMS technicians suffered "concussion-type injuries." All but one were treated and released from an area hospital. COP’S SECOND CLOSE CALL 2011
Dash cam video was released late Tuesday afternoon of a semi-truck driven by a man with a suspended license slamming into a Mount Dora police car. The police officer survived Tuesday morning's crash. This was the second time the officer was almost killed. Sgt. Jim Jicha was making his way through a busy intersection at Highway 441 near Lincoln Avenue (see map) when a truck driver ran the red light and slammed right into him. He was t-boned by a fully loaded gravel truck, more than 10 times the weight of his cruiser. The truck driver called 911 as he rushed to help the officer. Fog prevented a helicopter from making it to the scene, so Jicha was transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center by ground. Surprisingly, he only suffered a broken arm. "Oh, he's extremely lucky. We're happy. I'm actually shocked that there are no more injuries than what he sustained," said Lt. Robert Bell, Mount Dora Police Department. It's a blessing for a 25-year officer who's only six months away from retirement. It's especially amazing considering this is not the first time Jicha has had a brush with death. In 2007, WFTV reported how someone fired at his police SUV. The bullet went right through his seat's headrest and missed his head by inches. "These last two years have been trying for him, so he's in good spirits, joking, and feels lucky himself," Bell said. Investigators say the driver of the truck, Walter Hisen of Hernando, is at fault for running the stop light. He was charged with running the stop light and driving with a suspended license. Sgt. Jicha should be back at work in a few weeks. His lieutenant says he'll keep a close eye on him so he can make it to retirement.
