PRESIDENT BUSH CAMPAIGN (1992)
FOUR YEARS AGO, NEW HAMPSHIRE VOTERS SAVED THE BUSH CAMPAIGN. TODAY HE GOES BACK TO ASK THEIR HELP AGAIN. BUT IT WILL BE HARDER THIS TIME. NEW HAMPSHIRE HAS BEEN HIT HARDER BY THE RECESSION THAN ALMOST ANY OTHER STATE. PEOPLE ARE ANGRY AND MUCH OF THEIR ANGER IS FOCUSED ON THE WHITE HOUSE. IN ORDINARY TIMES, A CANDIDATE WITH NO POLITICAL EXPERIENCE WOULD BE CONSIDERED A FRINGE CANDIDATE... BUT THE LATEST NEW HAMPSHIRE POLLS SHOW BUCHANAN THE FAVORITE OF ALMOST ONE-THIRD OF REPUBLICAN VOTERS. VICE-PRESIDENT DAN QUAYLE DISMISSES THE BUCHANAN CHALLENGE. BUT NEW HAMPSHIRE HAS A HISTORY OF POLITICAL MISCHIEF. MOST FAMOUS...PRESIDENT JOHNSON ENDED HIS RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN AFTER FINISHING FIRST HERE, BUT BY A SMALLER MARGIN THAN EXPECTED. THE PRESIDENT IS ALREADY LOWERING HIS EXPECTATIONS FOR HIS PERFORMANCE. BUT HIS CAMPAIGN OFFICIALS BELIEVE THE PRESIDENT WILL HAVE A STRONG SHOWING...ONCE HE BEGINS EARNESTLY CAMPAIGNING.

Debra: Endurance Zeljko: Endurance, it’s not funny, but endurance first and foremost, because we show up for a few hours in the day and that’s it, and go home, and they are doing it the rest of the day, it’s just hard to fathom how they manage it. Debra: It’s not a funny job, so it’s hard to come up with a funny example. A30. HRN-3031 In: 02:19:07 Out: 02:19:15 B-Roll: Fashion Shot/Debra Messing A31. A38. HRN-3031 In: 02:24:35 Out: 02:24:56 Sound Bite: Frank Langella – Actor I don’t, I don’t differentiated no more, I used to when I was younger, I used to like one more than the other, now I really like acting in all the media, it’s really, it’s really wonderful, each one offers me some different challenge. A39. HRN-3031 In: 02:25:00 Out: 02:25:20 Sound Bite: Frank Langella – Actor Oh, you have to be nuts, I think, you have to be crazy, because you have to rise money, you have to start on a blank page, you have to deal with unions, and worst of all you have to deal with actors, I wouldn’t want to do that. A40. HRN-3031 In: 02:25:53 Out: 02:29:06 B-Roll: Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones arrive and stand for photos, CU on C. Zeta Jones. Shot press photographer grabbing a shot. A41. HRN-3031 In: 02:29:20 Out: 02:30:02 Sound Bite: Brian Grazer – Producer – Frost/Nixon Ron Howard – Director – Frost/Nixon Brian: Well we’re thrilled to be nominated, I think I got up at 5:22 I know digital clock to see, you know there great films, we’re different, there all different from one another, it’s a really, really, hard movie to make, it’s turning ideas into something cinematic, that’s due to this guy here. Ron: I was driving along, trying to get into New York, I was struck in traffic, listening to it on the radio, so I was all alone, and getting this news, it’s sort of like a movie moment, I was beating on the steering wheel, cheering out the window, it just made me feel fantastic. A42. HRN-3031 In: 02:30:02 Out: 02:30:39 Sound Bite: Brian Grazer – Producer – Frost/Nixon Ron Howard – Director – Frost/Nixon Ron: Here’s the thing that was so amazing to me and every day I was working with him, I kind of had to remind myself about this, there’s nothing of Richard Nixon in Frank Langella, there’s nothing of himself that he could draw on, and he created this character, I just got back from Washington D.C. for the inauguration and so many journalists and politicos taking me aside and saying it is uncanny what Frank Langella did in creating Richard Nixon, we’ve never seen anything with that kind of depth and dimension and that authenticity and it’s all artistry. A43. HRN-3031 In: 02:31:10 Out: 02:31:25 Sound Bite: Brian Grazer – Producer – Frost/Nixon Ron Howard – Director – Frost/Nixon Brian: Um, listen, don’t try to prognosticate any ideas, being a trend or, don’t try to outsmart the culture. Ron: I would agree and then its tenacity and a thing that Brian you to say said, 30 years ago is, it only takes one yes. A44. HRN-3031 In: 02:32:42 Out: 02:33:35 Sound Bite: Charles Roven – Producer I think one of things that a really good producer should have is a tremendous, a lot of lateral thinking ability, because you are dealing with so many desperate different elements when your putting together a film and so many different personalities and your trying to blend this thing which is part artistic and part commercial, even dealing with the small movies are a lot of money, so the big movies are a vast amount of money, so you have to an ability to think laterally and I think that a very important quality to have and also to be very resilient, there is a tremendous amount of adversity and rejection, and so you have to a lot of faith in what your doing. A45. HRN-3031 In: 02:34:30 Out: 02:35:10 B-Roll: Michael Douglas and C. Zeta Jones get interviewed by TV crew A46. HRN-3031 In: 02:35:19 Out: 02:35:27 B-Roll: Kirk Douglas and Mrs. Douglas arrive and stand for photos. A47. HRN-3031****Sniped In: 02:35:31 Out: 02:36:02 Sound Bite: Michael Douglas – with Catherine Zeta Jones Oh, I mean, obviously coming out of the shoot “Cuckoo’s Nest”, kind of set the tone for everything “China Syndrome” means a whole lot to me in terms of it has an issue of the disarmament issue, nuclear disarmament as a result of that, “Romancing the Stone” was really a hoot, but I like a couple of the crazy whack ones, one that wasn’t seen as much was “One Night at McCool’s” which is a little later on which is a lot of fun. A48. HRN-3031 In: 02:36:18 Out: 02:36:50 Sound Bite: Michael Douglas – with Catherine Zeta Jones Taking care of the details, you know that’s the best, taking care of the details, there is a great book actually that David O. Selznick wrote that’s called “Memo” which kind of explains it keeping up with all the details. OC: What is one of the misconceptions about producers? Michael: There just involved with the money, that there always just involved with the money, but they make a lot of creative decisions and really have to have a vision normally to see it all through. A49. HRN-3031 In: 02:37:07 Out: 02:37:45 B-Roll: Kirk Douglas walks through, Danny DeVito and Rhea Pearlman follow, Danny gets interviewed by TV crew. A50. HRN-3031 In: 02:38:00 Out: 02:38:15 Sound Bite: Danny DeVito – Actor/Director/Producer I think you have to put your finger on everything, you know, but you shouldn’t smother it, you know, that kind of thing, be there support and you got to love it. A51. HRN-3031 In: 02:38:24 Out: 02:38:34 B-Roll: Michael Sheen walks by with wife. A52. HRN-3031 In: 02:38:34 Out: 02:40:59 B-Roll: Marquee Signage of the Palladium, “PGA Awards” zoom in and out. ISRAEL/UK: BENJAMIN NETANYAHU INTERVIEW
TAPE_NUMBER: EF01/0137 IN_TIME: 10:20:29 // 13:05:28 LENGTH: 02:17 SOURCES: BBC RESTRICTIONS: Must show on-screen credit "Courtesy of 'Breakfast with Frost', BBC" FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: English/Nat XFA Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has accused Yasser Arafat of deliberately sacrificing Palestinian children to Israeli gunfire, to attract media attention. Mr Netanyahu made the comment on BBC television programme, "Breakfast with Frost", on Sunday morning. He said a number of Palestinian deaths in recent months had been caused by the P-L-O leader's tactic of "throwing kids in front of the camera and putting them in the line of fire". Just two days before the Israeli elections, the latest polls are forecasting a landslide victory for hard liner, Ariel Sharon. Incumbent Prime Minister Ehud Barak is trailing. Mr Netanyahu says he believes Mr Barak will lose - because of popular dissatisfaction with the peace process. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In the last few months, the figures show a massive preponderance of deaths of Palestinians not Israelis. We don't want anyone to die but it's a massive preponderance of people killed were Palestinians so how can Israel be tougher than that? SUPER CAPTION: Sir David Frost, BBC Interviewer SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well you're right about the first part. That was the technique by Arafat of throwing kids in front of the cameras and putting them in the line of fire and that indeed produced a lot of tragic casualties. I think that subsided considerably in the last few months and what you see a lot more is Palestinians sniping at Israelis who are driving on the highway - like the highway between London and Manchester. You drive and all of a sudden somebody is standing on a bridge and he's killing you. And Israel is trying to pinpoint the actual killers of this rather than the crowd control as you call it. I think that's limited some of the violence. But I think our response should look more at the Palestinian Authority itself, at the people who are allowing these killers and sometimes sending these killers, rather than trying to guard every leader in Israel. So we need to readjust our defence policy. It's not really a question of using overwhelming force. It's a question of using force in a more intelligent way." SUPER CAPTION: Benjamin Netanyahu, Former Israeli Prime Minister SOUNDBITE: (English) "In many ways this election is a referendum on Barak's failed policies. Most Israelis have figured out that the Oslo process is gone. In many ways, the Palestinian violations and violence in recent months have killed it. But they have not given up on peace. They want a peace process that doesn't go along with the murder of Israelis. That they cannot accept and that is what Mr Barak did accept. That's why they say, "You go!" and he will go." SUPER CAPTION: Benjamin Netanyahu, Former Israeli Prime Minister SHOTLIST: Jerusalem/London - 4 February, 2001 1. Two-shot Sir David Frost with Benjamin Netanyahu 2. RUSSIA: VLADIMIR PUTIN BBC INTERVIEW
TAPE_NUMBER: EF00/0260 IN_TIME: 13:12:46 - 16:12:45 // 19:37:13 - 20:01:25 LENGTH: 05:06 SOURCES: BBC BREAKFAST WITH FROST RESTRICTIONS: No Access UK/CNBC/CNN/Euronews/Internet FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: English/Nat Russia's acting president Vladimir Putin has said his country could one day join NATO but only if the Western military alliance treats Moscow as equal partner. Putin was speaking in an interview with Sir David Frost, broadcast on Sunday by the British Broadcasting Corporation - his first foreign television interview since entering Kremlin. Putin also spoke about the Chechnya conflict and denied atrocities had been carried out by Russian troops. UPSOUND: (English) "In this his first interview with a Western, or indeed a foreign journalist since he entered the Kremlin, I asked him about relations with the West, Chechnya and his own background in the KGB." SOUNDBITE: (English) Q: "The subject of Chechnya. What is it that makes you feel so strongly about Chechnya?" SUPER CAPTION: Sir David Frost, Anchor of "Breakfast with Frost" SOUNDBITE: (Russian) A: "My first thoughts are that the Chechnya people have fallen victim to international extremism. I think that rank and file people in Chechnya suffer because of the policies conducted by Russia over the past few years. Let's face it, Chechnya enjoyed defacto - and I want to stress that - defacto, complete independence since 1996. Regrettably, no coherent state structure ever came into being in Chechnya. And then extremist forces took advantage of that vacuum. They broke up the territory of the Chechnya republic into a maze of small separate entities outside the framework of any constitution, any legal foundation, each headed by a warlord, a so-called field commander, so what we got was a mini-Afghanistan. The bandits then bombed several residential blocks in Moscow and other regions of the Russian Federation. As a symbol of their revenge they killed almost 15-hundred ordinary residents in those blasts and from that moment on it became crystal clear to us that unless we deliver a blow to the very lair of terrorism, at the bases situated in the territory of the Chechnya republic, we will never be able to rid ourselves of this scourge, this gangrene. With their actions the terrorists forced us to pursue this option and I just don't think they expected us to act as resolutely as we did." SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Putin, Acting Russian President SOUNDBITE: (English) Q: "You undoubtedly have seen the accusations of possible war crimes against civilians in that German film and for instance in today's Moscow Times. Do you think there have been any such war crimes committed by Russian troops?" SUPER CAPTION: Sir David Frost, Anchor of "Breakfast with Frost" SOUNDBITE: (Russian) A: "The video footage that you mentioned that had been shown to the world public by German television - it has now been refuted by our own media. The newspaper has carried information coming straight from the man who really shot those sequences and he accused his German colleague of falsification. In fact, the German journalist simply bought the tape off our cameraman. And what it shows is the burial of rebels killed in action. Now that was then presented to the international public as evidence of torture and execution of prisoners which had nothing to do with reality. This is nothing more and nothing less than a frontline of information warfare and of confrontation. And I repeat it is a complete lie and falsification. And we have no need to kill civilians. It is a fact that our troops have taken the biggest cities and towns in Chechnya with the help of the Chechen people, with direct support from the people of Chechnya - without a single shot. So what is the sense of brutalising civilians? On the contrary, we are counting on their support and receiving it. So why would we aggravate the civilians?" SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Putin, Acting Russian President SOUNDBITE: (English) Q: "Is it possible Russia could join NATO?" SUPER CAPTION: David Frost, Anchor of "Breakfast with Frost" SOUNDBITE: (Russian) A: "I don't see why not. I wouldn't rely on such a possibility but I repeat, if and when Russia's views are taken into account as those of an equal partner. I want to stress this again and again. The situation that was laid down in the founding principles of the United Nations, that was the situation that obtained in the end of World War 2. Alright, the situation may have changed. Let's assume there is a desire on the part of those who perceive the change to install new mechanisms of ensuring international security. But pretending or proceeding from the assumption that Russia has nothing to do with it and trying to exclude it from this process is hardly feasible. And when we talk about our opposition to NATO's expansion, mind you we have never ever declared any region of the world as own of our special interests. I prefer to talk about strategic partnership."
