NO SEAT BELT CRAZY CHASE (2006)
ED BURKE WAS ON HIS WAY TO BUY A BIRTHDAY CARD FOR HIS BROTHER WHEN HIS CAR WAS INVOLVED IN THE FIRST OF A SERIES OF COLLISIONS THAT LED TO THE END OF A 115 MPH POLICE CHASE THROUGH DES MOINES AND ANKENY, IOWA. BURKE SAID THE TRUCK IN FRONT OF HIM WAS HYDROPLANING AND HE MOVED TO GET AROUND HIM. THE NEXT THING HE KNEW, A CAR WAS COMING RIGHT IN HIS DIRECTION. THE CAR WAS COMING RIGHT AT HIM. THE SUSPECT WAS A 42-YEAR-OLD MAN FROM DES MOINES. THE SUSPECT RAN FROM POLICE WHEN THEY TRIED TO PULL HIM OVER FOR TWO OUTSTANDING WARRANTS, FOR FORGERY AND ESCAPE. POLICE DISCOVERED THE WARRANTS AFTER RUNNING THE SUSPECTS LICENSE PLATE NUMBER BECAUSE HE WASN'T WEARING A SEAT BELT. THE CHASE PROCEEDED TO A NEARBY HIGHWAY WHERE HE WAS FOLLOWED BY AUTHORITIES. SPEEDS REACHED 115 MPH BEFORE THE SUSPECT TOOK AN EXIT. THE SUSPECT TRAVELED SOUTH IN THE NORTHBOUND LANES OF THE INTERSTATE, WEAVING AROUND ONCOMING TRAFFIC AND STAYING ON THE INSIDE SHOULDER UNTIL HE STRUCK BURKES CAR. THAT CRASH BLEW OUT THE SUSPECTS FRONT LEFT TIRE, BUT HE CONTINUED SOUTH, CAUSING SEVERAL MORE COLLISIONS UNTIL HE WAS FORCED BY TRAFFIC TO EXIT. THEN THE SUSPECT WAS STRUCK IN AN OFF RAMP THAT SENT HIS CAR INTO THE DITCH. THE SUSPECT FACES SIX FELONY CHARGES, INCLUDING ONE COUNT OF ELUDING, TWO COUNTS OF ASSAULT ON A POLICE OFFICER AND THREE COUNTS OF INTIMIDATION WITH A DEADLY WEAPON FOR THE THREE CIVILIAN VEHICLES THAT CRASHED DURING THE CHASE.
