MALCOLM X INTERVIEW - VINTAGE
VINTAGE MALCOLM X INTERVIEW. HE TALKS ABOUT WHITE MEN AND BLACK MEN ACTUALLY LISTENING TO EACH OTHER RATHER THAN USING THE RACE ISSUE AS A LIBERAL CALLING CARD. Malcolm X (1925–1965) was an African-American Muslim minister and human rights activist. To his admirers he was a courageous advocate for the rights of blacks, a man who indicted white America in the harshest terms for its crimes against black Americans; detractors accused him of preaching racism and violence. He has been called one of the greatest and most influential African Americans in history. His father was killed when he was six and his mother was placed in a mental hospital when he was thirteen, after which he lived in a series of foster homes. In 1946, at age 20, he went to prison for larceny and breaking and entering. While in prison, he became a member of the Nation of Islam (NOI), changing his birth name Malcolm Little to Malcolm X because, he later wrote, Little was the name that "the white slavemaster ... had imposed upon [his] paternal forebears". After his parole in 1952 he quickly rose to become one of the organization's most influential leaders, serving as the public face of the controversial group for a dozen years. In his autobiography, Malcolm X wrote proudly of some of the social achievements the Nation made while he was a member, particularly its free drug rehabilitation program. The Nation promoted black supremacy, advocated the separation of black and white Americans, and rejected the civil rights movement for its emphasis on integration. By March 1964, Malcolm X had grown disillusioned with the Nation of Islam and its leader Elijah Muhammad. Expressing many regrets about his time with them, which he had come to regard as largely wasted, he embraced Sunni Islam. After a period of travel in Africa and the Middle East, which included completing the Hajj, he also became known as el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz.[A] He repudiated the Nation of Islam, disavowed racism and founded Muslim Mosque, Inc. and the Organization of Afro-American Unity. He continued to emphasize Pan-Africanism, black self-determination, and black self-defense. On February 21, 1965, he was assassinated by three members of the Nation of Islam.

Advocates Protest Death Of Rikers Island Inmate And Demand End To Solitary Confinement
NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 14: (AUDIO OMITTED) A participant holds a sign that reads: “No More Solitary Confinement” as formerly incarcerated advocates, impacted families, and local elected officials rally outside Manhattan's City Hall for a press conference demanding the permanent closure of the Rikers Island jail complex after the death of inmate Elijah Muhammad on July 14, 2022 in New York City. Elijah Muhammad, 31, died of a suspected drug overdose at the George R. Vierno Center (GRVC), making him the tenth inmate to die in New York City Department of Correction (DOC) custody in 2022. The family of Elijah Muhammad and allies call on NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Governor Kathy Hochul to back plans to permanently close Rikers. Advocates demand an end to solitary confinement and are pushing for the legislation Int 0549-2022 banning solitary confinement in city jails. Despite the DOC’s large workforce and large budget, the Rikers Island jail complex remains in deplorable conditions after decades of neglect, advocates argue. They also call on New York State Governor Kathy Hochul to call for de-incarceration, thereby reducing the inmate population and demanding the release of low-level offenders and the elderly and immunocompromised people. Advocates have complained of inhumane conditions at Rikers Island for decades and argue that deaths will continue to mount unless people are de-incarcerated and/or the prison is permanently closed. Among the participating organization were: Freedom Agenda @FreedomAgendaNY, #Halt Solitary and NYC Jails Action Coalition (JAC). (Footage by Tomas Abad/Getty Images)
