PRESIDENT BUSH SAYS SADDAM HUSSEIN IS MAKING A ``BIG MISTAKE'' BY TESTING U-S RESOLVE IN ENFORCING A ``NO-FLY'' ZONE OVER SOUTHERN IRAQ. TWO AMERICAN F-16S TODAY SHOT DOWN AN IRAQI WARPLANE OVER A ZONE ESTABLISHED BY THE UNITED NATIONS TO PROTECT SHIITE MUSLIMS FROM SADDAM. MILITARY OFFICIALS SAY THE IRAQI CRAFT WAS SHOT DOWN AFTER MAKING A HOSTILE MOVE. SPEAKING TO REPORTERS AT THE START OF A TWO-DAY VACATION IN TEXAS, THE PRESIDENT SAID SADDAM MAY BE TESTING HIS WILL AS HE NEARS THE END OF HIS PRESIDENCY. BUT BUSH SAYS THE F-16S ``SENT THE MESSAGE'' TO SADDAM THAT HE MUST COMPLY WITH U-N RESOLUTIONS. AN IRAQI MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAYS BAGHDAD RESERVES THE RIGHT TO RESPOND TO THE ATTACK WHEN IT'S READY, BUT DIDN'T ELABORATE.
71464 NASA LANGLEY RESEARCH CENTER THE 50TH YEAR A SPECIAL REPORT
Celebrating the 50th year of the Langley Research Center, this NASA film highlights the many innovations and discoveries made from 1917 through 1967. Langley Research Center (LaRC) is the oldest of NASA's field centers, located in Hampton, Virginia, United States. It directly borders Poquoson, Virginia and Langley Air Force Base. LaRC focuses primarily on aeronautical research, though the Apollo lunar lander was flight-tested at the facility and a number of high-profile space missions have been planned and designed on-site. The film features an appearance by Gen. Jimmy Doolittle (00:08:40:00), who was also celebrating his 50th year in aviation at this time. President John F. Kennedy is seen at the 12 minute mark, presenting the Collier Trophy to the Mercury Astronauts.

Established in 1917 by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, the Center currently devotes two-thirds of its programs to aeronautics, and the rest to space. LaRC researchers use more than 40 wind tunnels to study improved aircraft and spacecraft safety, performance, and efficiency. Between 1958 and 1963, when NASA started Project Mercury, LaRC served as the main office of the Space Task Group, with the office being transferred to the Manned Spacecraft Center (now the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center) in Houston in 1962–63.

In 1917, less than three years after it was created, the NACA established Langley Memorial Aeronautical Laboratory on Langley Field. Both Langley Field and the Langley Laboratory are named for aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley. The Aviation Section, U.S. Signal Corps had established a base there earlier that same year. The first research facilities were in place and aeronautical research was started by 1920. Initially the laboratory included four researchers and 11 technicians.

NASA Langley 14-foot (4 m) x 22-foot (7 m) Subsonic Wind Tunnel
Langley Field and NACA began parallel growth as air power proved its utility during World War I. The center was originally established to explore the field of aerodynamic research involving airframe and propulsion engine design and performance. In 1934 the world's largest wind tunnel at that time was constructed at Langley Field with a 30 x 60 foot test section, which was large enough to test full scale aircraft, one of the first wind tunnels able to do this. (The 40 x 80 foot tunnel built at NASA Ames in California in the following decade stole away the "World's Largest" title).

Early in 1943 the center expanded to include rocket research, leading to the establishment of a flight station at Wallops Island, Virginia. A further expansion of the research program permitted Langley Research Center to orbit payloads. As rocket research grew, aeronautics research continued to expand and played an important part when subsonic flight was advanced and supersonic and hypersonic flight were introduced.

Langley Research Center can claim many historic firsts, some of which have proven to be revolutionary scientific breakthroughs. These accomplishments include the development of the concept of research aircraft leading to supersonic flight, the world's first transonic wind tunnels, the Lunar Landing Facility providing the simulation of lunar gravity, and the Viking program for Mars exploration.[6] Also, the grooving of aircraft runways was developed at Langley Research Center, which permits better grip by aircraft tires to the surface than a traditional smooth surface, was developed at Langley. This grooving is now the international standard for all runways around the world.

This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Entirely film backed, this material is available for licensing in 24p HD and 2K. For more information visit http://www.PeriscopeFilm.com

Hurricane Harvey in Texas - hotel front in wind
1980s NEWS
INTERVIEW Robert Lipsyte: You have said that you are three spiritual mentors so to speak, or Jesus, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Those seem like an interesting trio for a cop. Lee Brown 3:25 Well I've learned a lot, I base my life around the teachings of all three. And I think it makes good sense. I am a Christian. And certainly I believe in the tenets of Christianity as put forth by Jesus. I believe that what Gandhi stood for his country in bringing about the changes, they're dealing with the human rights of people in this country, and indeed, all people that were all would be significant for anyone, regardless of their line of work, their occupation. And certainly Dr. King stood out amongst other great leaders, because he transcended race, transcend religion transcend politics, and he was concerned about people regardless of where they might be. And it seems to me that in the business that I'm in, it's good to have role models that stand for high ideals. Robert Lipsyte 4:12 This is something I don't get. I mean, these are guys who believed in civil disobedience. These were not guys who believe necessarily in law and order on a on a street level, what what is a cop supposed to do? Lee Brown 4:27 They believe in, right? What's morally and ethically right. And in the in the instance of King and Gandhi, they use non violence as a means of achieving that. And certainly I believe that every police officer should also be an advocate of non violence. Every police officer should be an advocate of what's right. My the values that guide me and my decision making process are very simple ones, nothing novel. Is it legal? Is it moral? Is it ethical, and using those as guidelines have served me well, Robert Lipsyte 4:59 in a sense You know, we have the perception that police are supposed to keep the lid on our society keep us safe. Lee Brown 5:09 And that is the role of the police. It contrary to what we happen to see on television, quite often, where you have a crime that's committed, and a saw within 30 minutes with time off commercials, that's not the case with police work. Police officers spend a tremendously large amount of their time maintaining peace, maintaining order settling disputes, and probably the percentage in which they're evoking the the criminal justice process by making an arrest is relatively small compared to what they spend their time doing in other arenas. Robert Lipsyte 5:40 This is the ideal. I mean, you're talking about the ideal. Do you think that's that's what's happening in New York? I mean, the perception right now is, when you went to Houston in 1982, the the public prints, saw you as coming in to tame what was I think one of the phrases was a bunch of psychotic cowboys. And that phrase is not, of course, been used for the New York City police. But there is a sense that there is an alienation right now, between the police and the community. And in terms of doing what's right, doing it in a non violent way. It's not happening here. Lee Brown 6:15 Now, I've been very impressed with the New York City Police Department coming here, I knew it to be the premier police agency in America, I think you'll find that the vast, vast, vast majority of members of the New York Police are doing exactly that, carrying on their chosen profession in a professional manner, providing quality services to the citizens of the city. And that's the tradition that has been established before I got here. That's the tradition that I want to perpetuate, Robert Lipsyte 6:43 Why doesn't it feel that way out there? And why do a lot of people in the community feel that at its most radical, that they're an occupying force? I mean, how did this
