First of all, we are continuing to mount an operation in the Sierra Nevada mountains, and second of all we are looking for the way to mobilize all the intelligence sources to avoid this kind of terrorist attack." Various of captured people STORYLINE: Leftist rebels in Colombia are being blamed for a wave of terrorist attacks which they are thought to have mounted to distract security forces in search of eight foreigners who were kidnapped last week in Sierra Nevada. The Colombian armed forces are conducting a massive search operation for four Israelis, two Britons, a German and a Spaniard who were seized more than a week ago from cabins in the archaeological ruins of Ciudad Perdida, or the Lost City. The Revolutionary Arms Forces of Colombia, or FARC, which is blamed for the majority of kidnappings in Colombia, denied abducting the foreigners. A right-wing paramilitary group operating in the Sierra Nevada mountains also said their troops were not involved. On Saturday, suspected guerrillas from FARC bombed a train carrying coal in Guajira province, 790 kilometres (490 miles) north of the capital, Bogota. The suspected terrorists also group blew up a gas pipeline and two electrical towers and set fire to some trucks in the northern province of Bolivar, 650 kilometres (405 miles) from Bogota. No deaths or injuries were reported. Colombian President Alvaro Uribe said intelligence reports indicated that FARC leaders were carrying out these attacks to distract the security forces searching in Sierra Nevada. Meanwhile, Colombian troops cracked down on drug operations in eastern Colombia, destroying nearly 100 makeshift cocaine laboratories, authorities said. The laboratories were discovered in a rural area outside the town of Arauquita, near the border with Venezuela. Government troops also seized 70 (m) million Colombian pesos (nearly US$25,000), 100 cylinder bombs and about 3,500 kilogrammes (7,700 pounds) of paste made from coca, the base ingredient of cocaine. The latest wave of attacks are also making the army work harder to capture suspected guerrilla members. On Thursday, dozens of suspected militants were captured in operations all around the country. For the last 39 years Colombia's government has been battling the leftist Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, known as the FARC, a smaller rebel group and illegal paramilitary forces. About 3,500 people, most of them civilians, are killed in the fighting every year.

It did not matter. France did their best to put on an Olympics opening ceremony for the ages. The bells of Notre Dame ringing for the first time since the cathedral was gutted by fire, water cannons blasting along the river Seine. There were odes to the French revolution, a theatrical display with a bunch of beheaded Marie Antoinettes. Lady Gaga kicked things off French cabaret style. At one point, 80 artists from Moulin Rouge performing the iconic dance that date back to the 1820. It was part music festival, part fashion show, a diverse and inclusive display that had something for everyone may seem over the top at times but not for Paris. As for the athletes, 85 boats floated with nearly 7,000 athletes from more than 200 delegations. Many of their uniforms were covered with a bunch of plastic ponchos but they were still and celebrating in the rain. This was the first ever opening ceremony outside of a stadium. Then one of the most iconic moments of any Olympics, the torch making its way around the country here to Paris with sporting legends from all over the world getting to touch it. Rafael Nadal, Serena Williams, Nadia Ken, Tony Parker finally made it way to two French Olympians, Teddy Rena and Mary Jose Perek. The Olympic flame was ignited and the cauldron lifted up, floated up into the air marking the start of the 2024 summer games in Paris. And after all that, about four hours in legendary singer Celine Dion, who's been battling a rare neurological condition performed for the fans and athletes from the Eiffel Tower. With that, the 2024 Paris Olympics are officially under way back to you.”
\n

\n
-----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----
\n

\n
--KEYWORD TAGS--
\n
OLYMPICS PARIS FRANCE SPORTS WORLD
\n

21354 " THE FLEET THAT CAME TO STAY " 1945 INVASION OF OKINAWA WORLD WAR II KAMIKAZE ATTACKS
This film from the end of the Second World War was produced by the U.S. Navy as part of the industrial incentive scheme, and shows the naval engagements that took place during the invasion of Okinawa. It opens with a note informing viewers that this was the final battle fought by the Navy in WW2 and it had the greatest concentration of ships in men in all of history thus far (:09). The film is presented by the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard (:38). Explosions as warships fire shells at shoreline installations open the film (:59). A barrage leads to a long line of successive explosions (1:51). British allied forces were attacking to the south at the bypass fortress of Formosa (1:56). Fukushima is seen being hit with shell fire and bombs (2:02). Task Force 58, under the command of Admiral A. Mitscher, stepped up their continued aerial assault on Kyushu (2:24) and targeted Japanese shipping, harbors, air fields and factories. Men of the Navy called the day “Love Day” while in the rest of the world it was Easter Sunday (4:08). In the morning, Marine and Army forces moved in for a beach landing (4:20) and footage follows as troops spill out from amtraks (4:26) / amtracs. 100,000 men were sent ashore (4:33). The first week of the landing was mysteriously quiet and men aboard the 1,400 ships supporting the invasion are seen searching the skies anticipating an attack (5:24). The first Japanese Kamikaze corps plane arrives and takes a suicide dive onto one of the 1,400 ships (5:43). Men of the Japanese Kamikaze corps wore red sashes (5:56) and their target was the deck or hull of any American ship (6:00). Another Kamikaze plane drops near a ship and explodes in the water (6:12). The Kamikaze corps was considered to be Japan’s secret weapon, though U.S. forces were very familiar with them as they had been hitting in the Pacific for months (6:22). In this final attempt, Japan sent every plane it could fly (6:37). Combat continued into the night as gunfire and explosions light up the darkness (8:59). This Navy fleet was the "fleet that came to stay" as it had to support the land invasion (10:21). Foot soldiers are seen moving through rice paddies and over ridges as the fleet provided close support (10:48). Strikes were ordered from the air control room aboard the command ship (10:59). A brigade of ships was set up across the waters to provide the men with a steady line of supply (11:41). Kamikaze fighters are seen at the end of the long supply line (11:55). A Japanese plane is seen hit and breaking apart into the water (12:15). Troops simultaneously fixed their own ships and continued on fighting (13:20). As a plane lands on an aircraft carrier, a missile breaks loose and runs across the deck without exploding (13:39). US forces received news of President Roosevelt's death on April 13th, 1945 and take a moment to pay respects (14:34) before continuing to fight (15:06). The fighting would continue for three months (15:10). Only about 10% of enemy crafts made it through the US air patrol (15:16). Watchmen on the early hours of May 9th received news of Victory Day in Europe (15:59) or VE-Day though the Pacific war still carried on (16:21). Heavy batteries of cruisers, destroyers, and battleships fired against the hills of Okinawa (16:35). A headline from Washington Post reads “Navy Okinawa Casualties Near 10,000” (18:03). An impressive shot of black smoke puffs in the sky above popping white splashes along the water during intense combat follows (18:20). The film concludes just after a note informing citizens to continue to buy Victory bonds to ensure the end of the war (18:35).

The Battle of Okinawa, Apr 1, 1945 – Jun 22, 1945, codenamed Operation Iceberg, was a major battle of the Pacific War fought on the island of Okinawa by United States Marine and Army forces against the Imperial Japanese Army.

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! STORY: Artillery shells, mortars, missiles, grenades and row after row of land mines were discovered in an unidentified location in Iraq. The nearly 50 brick and concrete buildings were stacked to the rafters with ammunition and small arms. There was so much ammunition that all of it could not be housed inside the buildings and the remainder was stacked outside. Marines also located a truck loaded with weapons ready for shipment to Iraqi troops in the field. All of the munitions will be destroyed, and will no longer be a threat. Captain Myle Hammond of the U.S marines said what was uncovered on Sunday "is enough to outfit a small army in and of itself. Fortunately we won't be finding out on the receiving end out on the battlefield." The weapons came from nations all over the world, including the United States. 81964 U.S. ARMY 25th INFANTRY DIVISION IN VIETNAM 1966-68 "READY TO STRIKE"
This episode of "The Big Picture", the U.S. Army's long-running TV program, shows the exploits of the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. It dates to 1968. The film shows military as well as civil work, including nation building programs which it was hoped would stabilize South Vietnamese support against the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese. At 2:00, the 25th Infantry Division, also known as "Tropic Lightning" is seen being welcomed by South Vietnamese. The unit is shown deploying in Huey helicopters at 2:30, and engaging in combat. At 03:00, the unit's HQ at the famed Schofield Barracks in Hawaii is shown. At 3:10, jungle fighting exercises in Hawaii are shown. At 3:48, deployment in December of 1966 is seen from Hawaii and deployed aboard a ship to Vung Tau, where the 2nd Brigade deployed and were greeted by General William Westmoreland. At 4:50 the unit moves towards the Cu Chi village area. At 5:24, the 3rd Brigade deploys to Pleiku in the central highlands of Vietnam, which would operate as the forward base for the division. This airlift was of the 3rd Brigade, known as Operation Blue Light, was the largest attempted to that time. At 6:30, operations against Viet Cong begin in earnest at Ban Me Thout with a month long sweep of the province. In a frustrating precursor of what was to come during the war, the VC withdrew in front of the division and evaded capture or combat. At 7:40, a battle casualty is shown as a result of small arms fire. At 8:15, food caches and medical supplies are shown captured in the field.

At 8:40, armor elements at Cu Chi approach a former Michelin Rubber Plantation. At 9:44, a wounded soldier receives field treatment. At 9:55, troops find underground fortifications and the Tunnels of Cu Chi. At 10:23, in April 1966, the 1st Brigade lands in Vietnam and arrives in Cu Chi. At 11:00, a resettlement camp for refugees is set up. At 12:00, Operation Paul Revere takes place with a sweep near Plei Ku. 44, mortars are flown into the Ya Drang Valley. At 13:00, assault troops move into action as artillery provides covering fire. At 13:20, a wrecked American helicopter is seen after being shot down by NVA or VC forces. Operation Paul Revere concluded with a total of 66 U.S. KIA, while PAVN losses were 546 killed and a further 68 captured

At 14:00, claymore mines are shown being used. Special training is conducted in country to show how to operate a guerrilla attack and fight against the V.C. War dogs are shown being used for scouting. More caches of weapons are shown. At 16:00, indoctrination of villagers is seen -- with the 25th's interrogation section speaking with villagers and trying to convince them of the fallacies of communism.

At 18:00, the narrator speaks encouragingly about civil progress in Vietnam. At 18:20, syops leaflets are seen being dropped over Vietnam. These psychological operations are shown at 18:40, with the leaflets distributed by truck. At 20:00, medical service is provided near Cu Chi for locals. At 22:00, a construction program is shown at Dong Ying, to improve local conditions for 10,000 inhabitants.

At 24:30, Operation Barking Sands is shown with the 25th attempting to locate and attack a hardcore V.C. unit. At 26:50, pinned down troops call in an air strike by Sabre jets. At 28:00, Barking Sands concludes with U.S. forces having little to show for their ground combat victory. (19 American soldiers were killed in this battle, along with 304 enemy soldiers.)

The 25th division was heavily engaged from April 1966 until 1972 throughout the area of operations in Southeast Asia. During this period, Tropic Lightning soldiers fought in some of the toughest battles of the war including Operation Junction City.

During the Tet offensives of 1968 and 1969, Tropic Lightning soldiers were instrumental in defending the besieged city of Saigon. From May through June 1970, division soldiers participated in Allied thrusts deep into enemy sanctuaries located in Cambodia. In these Incursion operations, the division units confiscated thousands of tons of supplies and hundreds of weapons. This operation crippled the Cambodian-based efforts against American units. Following its return from Cambodia to South Vietnam, the division resumed its place in the Vietnamization Program. The war was winding down. By late December 1970, elements of the 25th Infantry Division were able to begin redeployment to Schofield Barracks. During the war in Vietnam, 22 Medals of Honor were awarded to Tropic Lightning soldiers.

This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA. Several pockets of Iraqi fighters have been providing stubborn resistance to the US-led mission to take the town, which is on the Americans' vital supply route to Baghdad. Two US Cobra gunship helicopters were also seen flying over the US military checkpoint towards Nasiriyah - their mission reportedly to attack Iraqi targets that are dug in around the town. 81724 “ THE FIGHT FOR THE SKY ” 1945 WWII AIR COMBAT OVER EUROPE EIGHTH AIR FORCE RONALD REAGAN
“The Fight for the Sky” is a morale boosting WW2 documentary commissioned by the US government prior to the Normandy Invasion. It features the American air base in East Anglia on the east coast of England during WW2. Various fighter planes are featured in battle including the P-47 Thunderbolt, P-38 Lightning and P-51 Mustang. It begins with preparations for a mission and shots of aerial combat over Europe. The narrator, actor Ronald Reagan, digs into mission preparations, including the briefing and planning process as well as the expected enemy opposition and coordination required. In February of 1944, a new initiative began. American forces switched from defensive to offensive position and began to seek out German installations. They specifically targeted enemy transportation methods. This initiative lead to the possibility of the Normandy landings and opening of the western front possible. This film was distributed and exhibited for the Office of War Information as a public service by the War Activities Committee Motion Picture Industry (:08). It is an Army Air Forces Film (:14). Sirens wail on the German side (6:23) and Luftwaffe fighter pilots run for crafts (6:24) such as Focke-Wulf 190’s. A formation of Mustangs watch the skies for enemy pilots (7:06). Long range wind tanks fall from the tail (7:28). Captured footage (8:04) from enemy fighters reveal the attack on Allied bombers from behind. A B-17 catches fire (8:20).
