DATE: 25 MAY 1999 For the fifth year in a row, entertainment fans from around the world paid tribute to their favorite stars in film and music, courtesy of the Blockbuster Awards. The world's largest publicly voted awards show, honoring achievements in both music and film, to be aired by Fox in the middle of June, took place at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium on Tuesday. The ceremony covered more than fifty categories in movies and music. Among those making special appearances were NICOLAS CAGE, MARIAH CAREY CUBA GOODING, JR. and KATHY BATES Crossover Latin American pop sensation RICKY MARTIN, vocalist SARAH MCLACHLAN, and teen phenomenon the BACKSTREET BOYS all performed at the event. Latin music sensation Martin's recent chart-climbing single "Livin' La Vida Loca" has rocketed his career into mainstream America. Singer and songwriter McLachlan is known for her powerful lyrics and the successful creation of "Lilith Fair." The Backstreet Boys won the 1998 Billboard Music Award for Group Album of the Year and have gone multi-platinum in 16 countries since their debut. Cage, a previous Blockbuster Entertainment Award-winner was a nominee in 2 categories the favorite actor (Suspense) and favorite actor (Drama/Romance); musical diva Carey, who has garnered six Grammy Award nominations and topped the Billboard Charts with 13 No. 1 singles was a nominee in the Favorite Female Artist pop category; Academy Award-winner Gooding, Jr., who most recently starred in "What Dreams May Come" was up for favorite supporting actor (Drama/Romance); and Academy Award-winner Bates, recently nominated for a second Oscar for her supporting role in "Primary Colors," was up for favorite Supporting actress. (Drama/Romance) Winners on the night included JOHN TRAVOLTA, with the World Artists Award, WILL SMITH took the Favorite Actor (Action Adventure) award for Enemy of the State, JACKIE CHAN and CHRIS TUCKER were voted favorite Duo (Action Adventure) for Rush Hour, GILLIAN ANDERSON was voted Favorite Actress (Science Fiction) for the X Files, CAMERON DIAZ was Favorite Actress (Comedy) for There's Something About Mary. Other winners included MEG RYAN (You've Got Mail), HARRISON FORD (Six Days, Seven Nights), JULIA ROBERTS (Stepmom), TOM HANKS (Saving Private Ryan), WESLEY SNIPES (Blade) and CATHERINE ZETA JONES (Mask of Zorro). BEN AFFLECK, MATT DAMON, ED HARRIS, BRUCE WILLIS, JOSEPH FIENNES, RENE RUSSO, FREDDIE PRINZ JR and STEPHEN DORFF were all selected for awards too. In music cateogries, winners were MARIAH CAREY, BACKSTREET BOYS, JEWEL, USHER, MATCHBOX 20, LAURYN HILL, CELINE DION, RICKY MARTIN, GIPSY KINGS, DMX. and WILL SMITH. GARTH BROOKS, SHANIA TWAIN and BROOKS AND DUNN all collected awards too. Twain won the Favorite Female Country Artist award for "Come On Over." Garth Brooks takes home is the Favorite Male Country Artist honors, for "The Limited Series," "Sevens," and "Double Live." And Brooks and Dunn were voted the Favorite Country Duo or Group, for "If You See Her" and their "Greatest Hits Collection."
