Kilauea volcano summit caldera refilling, Hawaii, USA, timelapse
Time lapse footage of a caldera known as Kaluapele on the summit of Kilauea volcano being refilled by multiple eruptions over 2021, 2022 and 2023, Hawaii, USA. Calderas are large depressions that can form when volcanoes collapse after erupting. This occurs because magma that structurally supports the top of the volcano is expelled or drains to new vents. The collapse caused the crater depth to increase form 85m to around 488m, and its diameter to more than double. These eruptions refilled around a quarter of this lost mass.
