In Wanchai district on Hong Kong island, residents carried a dragon effigy 160 feet (48 metres) long, with 13 thousand sticks of incense burning in it. This weekend was chosen for the dragon dance parades because it marked the birthday of a legendary Chinese doctor, said to have lived 2,000 years ago, thought to have had amazing healing powers. SARS has infected 1,713 people in Hong Kong and killed 247.

The Hong Kong Tourist Association presents “Destination Hong Kong,” a 1960s color picture from Dudley Productions Limited. Considered “the crossroads of the Orient,” the narrator explains how its harbors regularly receives goods and people from the all the world’s continents. Mark 01:09 reveals a boatful of tourists watching ships unload before returning focus to the business activities of the seaport “whose main reason for existence is the worldwide import and export of merchandise.” Banking is also a key segment of Hong Kong (mark 02:05) as is tourism. We watch as tourists visit a currency exchange (mark 03:27) before delving into Hong Kong culture and an explanation of Hong Kong’s geography (mark 05:30). The camera takes the viewer through the hustle and bustle of Hong Kong streets as well-dressed businessmen and women make their way to work. At mark 07:24 we visit the city of Victoria and architecture that varies from traditional to buildings with a Western influence. Contrasts continue as the film takes the viewer from local markets to high-end stores. Mark 12:00 takes us to the Happy Valley Racecourse (a popular tourist destination) followed by a look at Repulse Bay in the southern part of Hong Kong Island where we see a traditional Chinese lion dance. The film tells of life on aboard a sampan boat starting at mark 15:00 and then visit the urbanized Kowloon (mark 17:50) as the camera shows us “wonderful shops and fine hotels.” Hong Kong is also a place to learn, the narrator explains starting at mark 19:00, as we take a look inside a typical classroom before turning to nightlife, including a trip to a Chinese opera and a look at the annual sea festival and Dragon Boat Race in the town of Aberdeen (mark 22:45).<p>

87144 1959 AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CVS 47) WESTPAC CRUISE ANTI-SUBMARINE WARFARE
This color home movie was shot by an American sailor who served aboard the famed aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea (CVS 47) in WESTPAC, from January to July 1958.. At that time the ship joined the 7th Fleet in antisubmarine warfare exercises and traveled to Hawaii, Philippines, Okinawa, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong. In this era, her anti-submarine air group typically consisted of one squadron with 20 twin-engined Grumman S2F Trackers ASW aircraft, a squadron of HSS-1 Seabat ASW helicopters and a detachment of Douglas AD-5W Skyraider airborne early warning (AEW) aircraft. (A detachment of four McDonnell F2H Banshee fighters was often assigned to protect the other aircraft.) In this particular film, the Skyraiders shown are from Marine squadron VMA 332, and were flown aboard, along with Marine H-19 helicopters and OE light observation planes, just before the ship reached the Philippines. Then, many of the ASW aircraft were unloaded at Subic Bay, and the carrier, along with many recently embarked Marines, sailed off for a 3 week exercise in the S. With the economic recession well behind them, many people in Hong Kong felt it was a time to celebrate and renew their wishes. VOICE-OVER: 0003 The dragon dancers were out in force for the annual Chinese New Year celebrations in Hong Kong. 0010 This year is the Year of the Dragon - probably the most recognisable sign of the Chinese astrological calendar. 0017 As the dragons took centre stage, dancing to the sound of cymbals and drums, movie star Jackie Chan joined the celebrations. 0025 The dragon is associated with hope, energy, resilience and good fortune, and people's wishes seemed to reflect that spirit of optimism. 0033 SOUNDBITE: (English) "Just the basics, health, happiness and success." SUPER CAPTION: Voxpop 0037 About 40 international and local groups danced, marched and played along Hong Kong Island's waterfront, creating a carnival atmosphere. 0044 Traditional floats from mainland China took part in the New Year celebrations for the first time. 0050 As the dragons danced, the crowds were also treated to a song from Jackie Chan, who acts as an ambassador for Hong Kong when he's not making movies. 0059 UPSOUND: Music 0101 After the parade, the floats will go on display on the island until February 6, when the festivities officially end. 0107 The Hong Kong event is now a fixture in the New Year celebrations, and the Year of the Dragon saw huge crowds along its scenic route.
