TAPE_NUMBER: EF01/0088 IN_TIME: 20:54:32 LENGTH: 01:23 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: Voice and effects XFA This week is Chinese New Year, traditionally celebrated with lion dancing. In Hong Kong, one small village has revived its heritage, rediscovering skills that were almost lost. Now the community has a full lion dance troupe once again, and it's polishing its performance in the last days before the annual highlight at New Year. VOICE OVER: 0003 Life in Nam Tin Village is a world away from the modern housing blocks that surround it. 0008 It's a more peaceful environment than most in Hong Kong for the old people that live here. 0014 But for the young, it lacks excitement, and many will grow up and move away, leaving behind the way of life and traditions of their ancestors. 0022 One group of villagers is going against the tide. 0026 Youngsters who would have been embarrassed to be seen studying traditional Chinese culture, have reformed their local lion dancing troupe. Now they are in their last days of practice before the Chinese New Year. 0037 UPSOUND 0041 Proper lion dancing is not easy. It requires expert balance and huge strength to perform on top of the series of posts up to six feet high. 0052 The drummer in the group is 16-year old Tang Wan-maneen. 0055 There aren't many girls in the troupe she says. It's just like people think of football as a boy's sport, so there are comparatively fewer girls involved. 0105 The Nam Tim lion dance troupe now has more than 20 regular members aged from 14 to 22. 0112 They've won prizes in competitions overseas, which has enabled them to buy almost fifty lion heads, costing more than a thousand U-S dollars each. 0123 SHOTLIST: Hong Kong, 19 & 21 January, 2001 21 January 0000 Village street with old people 0005 Nam Tin Village 0008 Two old people on bench 0012 Old man with flowers outside his house 0016 Young girl and boy walking along in village with cigarettes 19 January 0021 Interior lion dancers club house with children looking at old lion dance photos 0025 Young boy grips waist of other boy 0028 Two young boys practice lion dance moves 0032 Young boys watching 0035 Young boys attempt jumping moves on posts and fall down 0041 Lion dance head 0044 Wide shot Lion dancing 0051 Girl drummer 0055 Tang Wan-man, Lion Dance drummer 0104 Various shots lion dance and children watching 0123 VISION ENDS ?

But for the young, it lacks excitement, and many will grow up and move away, leaving behind the way of life and traditions of their ancestors. One group of villagers is going against the tide. Youngsters who would once have been embarrassed to be seen studying traditional Chinese culture, have reformed their local lion dancing troupe. Now they are in their last days of practice before the Chinese New Year. During the holiday period they'll put on more than forty shows. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "We've nurtured a group of young people. Everyone on the team is very enthusiastic, and this kind of healthy activity is good for them because it keeps them occupied and they avoid bad things and bad company." SUPER CAPTION Cheung Wai-yu, Leader, Tang Siu-lun Lion Dance team Proper lion dancing is not easy. It requires expert balance and huge strength to perform on top of the series of posts up to six feet high. 16-year old drummer Tang Wan-man is responsible for the lion's movements. She's been drumming for four years already and the overwhelmingly male make-up of lion dancing troupes doesn't bother her. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "There aren't many girls in lion dance troupes, it's just like people think of football as a boy's sport, so there are comparatively fewer girls involved." SUPER CAPTION Tang Wan-man, Lion Dance drummer The test of a good lion dancer is his or her ability to express emotion through control of the lion's mouth, eyes and limbs. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "The most difficult bit about being the lion's head is to make the lion and the dancers inside become a single animal. Each expression of the lion becomes an expression of yourself. You have to express the liveliness and attractiveness of the lion so that you really look like a living animal." SUPER CAPTION Tang Tak-wai, lion dancer The Nam Tim lion dance troupe now has more than 20 regular members aged from 14 to 22. It has won prizes in competitions overseas and this has enabled it to buy almost fifty lion heads, costing more than a thousand U-S dollars each.
