Friday protests over Trump"s Jerusalem decision

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Protesters took to the streets of Jerusalem, several cities in the West Bank, and Jordan on Friday as anger reignited over US President Donald Trump"s controversial decision last week to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
Palestinians threw rocks at Israeli security forces in the West Bank city of Bethlehem as hundreds demonstrated outside the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem. Thousands gathered in downtown Amman, and Jordanian television aired live footage of smaller protests elsewhere in the country.
Metal security barriers were erected around the Damascus Gate entrance to Jerusalem"s Old City, which has often become a flashpoint for protests, and extra police officers have been deployed to control crowds.

Israel did not impose age restrictions on those able to access al-Aqsa mosque on Friday. In the past, young men have been banned from entering the area for Friday prayers in a bid to prevent violence.
Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld confirmed that officers would be carrying out additional security measures in and around the Old City throughout the day.
Trump"s move last week to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and commit to moving the US embassy to the holy city prompted international criticism and sparked protests across the world.
The announcement, which upended seven decades of US foreign policy, delighted Israeli officials but was condemned by Palestinian leaders, who see East Jerusalem as the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki told reporters last week that the leadership had decided there would be "no formal communications" with US officials in the wake of Trump"s Jerusalem decision.
Jordan"s King Abdullah has also been critical of Trump"s announcement, saying last week that there was "no alternative to a two-state solution, and Jerusalem is key to any peace agreement." Abdullah is the custodian of the Muslim holy sites in the Old City of Jerusalem.
CNN"s Oren Liebermann reported from Jerusalem. James Masters wrote from London. CNN"s Jomana Karadsheh contributed to this report from Amman, Jordan.

The demonstrators - who included Palestinians, foreign and Israeli activists - were marching towards the fence, carrying anti-barrier banners and chanting anti-barrier slogans. Israeli soldiers prevented protesters from reaching the barrier by standing in their path - which led to scuffles breaking out between the two parties, Two the protesters were injured during the incident. Israel began building the barrier in the West Bank two years ago, saying it was needed to keep out Palestinian attackers. Palestinians say the structure, which dips into the West Bank, is an attempt by Israel to impose a border without waiting for a peace deal.

The question is why it is okay for there to be 90,000 settlers outside of the separation barrier that the Israeli settlement has built. Why does he say this is the most pro-Israeli settlement in history. Why is there a bill in the Knesset that would legalize even the distant outposts in the West Bank? This is an effort to distract from the real debate we should be having that Secretary Kerry talked about today.

The demonstration, in the West Bank village of Bilin, included both Israeli and Palestinian protesters who marched with anti-barrier banners and chanted anti-barrier slogans. Once reaching the construction site the Israeli army forces ordered the demonstrators to leave the area. When protesters refused, scuffles broke out between the demonstrators and the Israeli army soldiers. Israel maintains it is building the barrier to keep out Palestinian militants who have killed more than 400 Israelis in suicide bombings over the past three years. The barrier has outraged Palestinians, who often call it the "apartheid wall" and say it is part of an Israeli land grab.

Soldiers fired gas and smoke canisters to disperse demonstrations in the West Bank village of Bilin, in the Nablus area, and in Khader on the outskirts of Bethlehem. A few protesters in Bilin were evacuated, some wounded. Palestinians in the West Bank say the barrier is an attempt to prevent them from establishing a viable, independent country. They do not accept that the barrier could form Israel's border. Villagers of Bilin say the route of the barrier separates them from their farmland and neighbours. Protesters are still calling for the route of the barrier to be moved further away from the village and that a nearby road is restricted to use by Israelis only. Israel claims the barrier is a security measure.

And the reaction from the militant groups has also been harsh. It highlights the widening gap between the official Palestinian institutions and the militant groups which hold increasing sway and power especially in the northern part of the West Bank where this happened. Now violence has been surging across the occupied West Bank over the past year and a half with the Israeli government saying that the Palestinian Authority’s lack of action compels the Israeli military, they say, to conduct regular raids across the West Bank to tamp down on militant activity. So, what happened was that a gun battle erupted in the town of Tulkarm after Palestinian Authority security forces say that their forces entered the refugee camp there to remove what they called hazardous materials and barriers, including some that were near a school and that they then came under fire from armed youths in the area. A local journalist told CNN that the forces entered the camp to remove unarmed IEDs that were put in place to target Israeli forces if and when they were to enter the refugee camp. Now security forces say that they took necessary measures to control the situation. Now, the man killed was identified as a 22-year-old Abdul Qader Zaqdah. His brother told CNN that he was an electrician and claimed that he was not associated with any militant groups. But the militant groups have called this, like Hamas said, a crime against our people and the Al Aqsa martyrs brigade which is associated with the Fatah party which is the dominant party in the Palestinian authority, they accuse the Palestinian Authority forces of assisting the Israelis and announced that official security forces from the Palestinian Authority were now prohibited from entering the Tulkarm refugee camp. The militants also warned that the Palestinian security forces would be treated like the occupation, meaning the Israeli forces if they came into the camp. Israeli soldiers watching the bulldozer 9. Wide view of Israeli army vehicles parked along road STORYLINE Israeli army bulldozers on Tuesday morning removed cement barriers on a main road linking the West Bank's largest city, Nablus, with the nearby town of Jenin to the west and the Jordan Valley to the east. The barriers had been put in place in 2002, at the height of Israel's military offensive against Palestinian militants. The road barriers, along with a network of army checkpoints, had forced hardships upon tens of thousands of Palestinian residents who had to take detours along bumpy backroads to get to their destinations, and severely disrupted daily life in the area. The removal of the barrier is part of a lifting of restrictions on Palestinians in accordance with an agreement reached between the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government during talks at the Egyptian resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh earlier this year. The removal of the roadblock comes on the same day that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon reiterated his plan to keep all the major West Bank settlement blocs in Israeli hands, and a day after he announced that the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza would be delayed until August.

The demonstrators were protesting against the ongoing Israeli construction of the separation barrier. Israeli soldiers sent to secure the area fired tear gas on several occasions to dispel the crowd. Israeli cabinet ministers have approved the final route of the separation barrier, which encompasses more than 6 percent of West Bank land. Construction of the West Bank barrier began in 2002 and is one-third complete. Israel said it needed a shield against of Palestinian suicide bombers and gunmen. The Palestinians have denounced the construction as a land grab, saying that Israel could have built the barrier on its land. Last year, the World Court said in a non-binding opinion that the construction of the barrier is illegal and should stop.
