He was in London to promote his new album, "The Saga Continues..." by P Diddy and the Bad Boy Family. But as well as talking about his latest tracks, the star also chatted about his troubled personal life and his plans for the future. After the press were kept waiting for more than an hour and a half, Mr Diddy finally turned up to lay his cards on the table as to why he'd decided to change his name from Puff Daddy to P Diddy. "I made a little joke saying that I was going to have a name change ceremony and officially change my name." said P, " When I woke up the next morning it was on the cover of the papers that I had changed my name. P Diddy is a man with his fingers in many pies and he took time to talk about his clothing line, which he was rumoured to be selling. This was not the case as Mr Diddy revealed. In fact, he is planning to go head to head in competition against underwear designer Calvin Klein, saying black men need more room in their underwear - and that was a market not catered for. The star also answered questions about his recent brush with the law following a gun incident in late December 1999, involving himself, Jennifer Lopez and hip hop artist Shyne. Shyne was convicted of firing a weapon to the ceiling to disperse the crowds. P Diddy defended Shyne today, saying that they were trying their utmost to clear his name in an appeal. He added he feels the sentence was too long for the crime committed, and that other more serious crimes are not as harshly punished. After talking at length about the relationship between hip hop, rap and crime, he went on to attack the "cleaning up" of hip hop, which was at the centre of a recent convention in the States. "Hip Hop is always going to be raw and it's always going to reflect what's going on in neighborhoods. We say to the government that if you don't like what they are saying then change what they are seeing, then change how you are forcing them to live." Other honorees were Karolina Kurkova, who was named model of the year; Hugh Grant, who was selected leading man; 'Igby Goes Down' star Kieran Culkin, picked as Newcomer of the year; and Gywneth Paltrow, was got the Red Carpet award. John Travolta presents Fashion Designer of the Year to Tom Ford JENNIFER LOPEZ MOST INFLUENTIAL FASHION STAR OF YEAR At Tuesday's (15OCT02) VH1-Vogue Fashion Awards, actors, models and musicians-turned-designers were feted for their penchant for looking absolutely fabulous. "I think the most important thing about style is the smile you put on other people's faces - or the look of absolute terror," quipped Aerosmith's Steven Tyler as he picked up the Rockstyle award. Platinum-blond rapper Eve was given the Breakthrough Style award; she thanked her nail stylist, among many others. And singer-actress-turned-designer J.Lo, or Jennifer Lopez, was named the Most Influential Star of the Year. But anyone hoping that she might wear some of the sexy, jaw-dropping fashions of previous awards shows were likely disappointed; she was demurely dressed, like a schoolgirl, wearing a white shirt covered by a black sweater and a flared white miniskirt. Oh, and stiletto heels. The show, hosted by 'Will & Grace' star Debra Messing, mixed music with fashion; performers such as Pink and David Bowie sang in between tributes to designers such as Ralph Lauren and Alexander McQueen; and mini-fashion shows. Celebrities paid homage to designers, and vice versa. The nominees for the 'VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards' are determined by the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards Style Council, an exclusive committee of top fashion editors, journalists, curators, stylists, designers, photographers and models assembled by VH1 and Vogue. Nominees for the categories of 'Visionary Video' and 'Designer of the Year' were selected online by visitors to VH1.com and Style.com. Donatella Versace gave Lopez her award, while Sean "P. Diddy" Combs paid tribute to Lauren, and John Travolta presented Tom Ford with the Designer of the Year trophy. Other honorees were Karolina Kurkova, who was named model of the year; Hugh Grant, who was selected leading man; 'Igby Goes Down' star Kieran Culkin, picked as Newcomer of the Year; and Gywneth Paltrow, was got the Red Carpet award. Paltrow, whose father died earlier this month, did not attend. Venus and Serena Williams, Claire Danes, LL Cool J, Naomi Campbell, Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts were among the other celebrities who took part in the two-hour show, which aired live on the VH1 cable television network.
