TAPE: EF01/0512 IN_TIME: 14:40:50 DURATION: 3:36 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: music/performance rights must be cleared DATELINE: 6th July 2001. London, UK SHOTLIST 1. Puff Daddy arrives - "Morning everyone, sorry I'm a little late, I'm not used to the London traffic." 2. Ws press conference 3. Sot Puff Daddy - On changing his name as a joke during a dull interview - "I told them that I was going to be changing my name on credits and stuff like that, I always did that, if you check my credits over the last 10 years I usually come up with a new name just to keep the flavor going and so I made a little joke saying that I was going to have a name change ceremony and officially change my name. When I woke up the next morning it was on the cover of the papers that I had changed my name. The kids and everybody in the city of New York kept calling me P.Diddy so I just rolled with it, it was cool." 4. B-Roll - APTN FILE - Puff Daddy going into court March 2001 5. Sot Puff Daddy - On Shyness sentence - "As far as the evidence shows he was not trying to shoot anyone, he was aiming in the air, we feel it was self defence and we feel also that it was something that happened that never should have happened and somebody shouldn't have 8 to 10 years of their life taken away for that type of mishap. There are harsher crimes that go on that get less." 6. B-Roll Puff Daddy and Jennifer Lopez - APTN file December 1999 7. Sot Puff Daddy - on the song "I Want A Girl" being dedicated to Jennifer - "That was dedicated to Jennifer and it was a record that ... one of the verses was dedicated to her basically and the other verses could really go out to any girl that I have dealt with in the past but it was one verse and the over all record is dedicated to her." 8. B-Roll Jennifer Lopez - APTN file December 1999 9. Sot Puff Daddy - on Jennifer using the word Nigga in her song - "I know where her heart is at, I don't think she meant to say it as a racial slur. To be honest in New York Latinos and black people call each other my niger because we are people of colour and it's more an endearing term and so when we was together I was her nigger and it was something that was out of love." 10. Clip playback of the video "Bad Boys 4 Life" 11. Sot Puff Daddy on taking on Calvin Klein - "I'm challenging Calvin Klein to who can make the best underwear. Right now I have an underwear line and I have more styles than Calvin and I like to think my underwear feels better than Calvins. They are roomier for the black man. It's a snug fit but it's not as tight." 12. WS presser 13. Sot Puff Daddy - on hip hop - "Hip Hop is always going to be raw and it's always going to reflect what's going on in neighborhoods. We say to the government that if you don't like what they are saying then change what they are seeing, then change how you are forcing them to live. Thankyou." 14. B-roll Puff Daddy at photocall. P DIDDY LIFTS THE LID ON HIS PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE ================================================= P Diddy, the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy and also known as Sean Combs, has been talking openly about his private life to members of Europe's press. He was in London to promote his new album, "The Saga Continues..." by P Diddy and the Bad Boy Family. But as well as talking about his latest tracks, the star also chatted about his troubled personal life and his plans for the future. After the press were kept waiting for more than an hour and a half, Mr Diddy finally turned up to lay his cards on the table as to why he'd decided to change his name from Puff Daddy to P Diddy. "I made a little joke saying that I was going to have a name change ceremony and officially change my name." said P, " When I woke up the next morning it was on the cover of the papers that I had changed my name. The kids and everybody in the city of New York kept calling me P.Diddy so I just rolled with it, it was cool." The name Jennifer Lopez was naturally on everyone's lips and P Diddy revealed that he had written a song on the album dedicated to J-Lo entitled "I Need A Girl", where one verse is solely about his relationship with the Latin superstar. Whilst on the subject of Ms Lopez, he talked candidly about the criticism that she has been getting in the States over her use of the word "nigga" is one of her songs. "I know where her heart is at, I don't think she meant to say it as a racial slur. To be honest in New York Latinos and black people call each other my nigga because we are people of colour and it's more an endearing term and so when we was together I was her nigga and it was something that was out of love." P Diddy is a man with his fingers in many pies and he took time to talk about his clothing line, which he was rumoured to be selling. This was not the case as Mr Diddy revealed. In fact, he is planning to go head to head in competition against underwear designer Calvin Klein, saying black men need more room in their underwear - and that was a market not catered for. The star also answered questions about his recent brush with the law following a gun incident in late December 1999, involving himself, Jennifer Lopez and hip hop artist Shyne. Shyne was convicted of firing a weapon to the ceiling to disperse the crowds. P Diddy defended Shyne today, saying that they were trying their utmost to clear his name in an appeal. He added he feels the sentence was too long for the crime committed, and that other more serious crimes are not as harshly punished. After talking at length about the relationship between hip hop, rap and crime, he went on to attack the "cleaning up" of hip hop, which was at the centre of a recent convention in the States. "Hip Hop is always going to be raw and it's always going to reflect what's going on in neighborhoods. We say to the government that if you don't like what they are saying then change what they are seeing, then change how you are forcing them to live." He finished off the press conference with an exclusive video "Bad Boys 4 Life" which features a long list of celebrities, including Mike Tyson, Ben Stiller, Crazy Town, Shaquille O'Neal, Snoop Dogg, and Ice Cube. The album "The Saga Continues..." is out in North America on July 10th. Releases elsewhere are not known at present. Obviously each of the artists have a huge quota of people, and the record companies and managers, who come with them all of whom will come with them and have their own agenda for their artist and their positioning, so it is important that we give them the best position without denigrating what the show is about. Because the show is really the platform for each and individual artist and you cant let that get out of kilter by leaning too far either way. So we have got to do a lot of diplomacy. We have got to work very hard with it. But these people know that this is a powerful tool for them , it is a very important show to be seen on and because of the syndication it will be seen everywhere, so it is up to them to make a great performance. As long as we can concentrate on the artists performance rather than handing people smarties then we are usually pretty good. " 19. File Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman at the Venice Film festival , September 1999 5. SOT Mark Frith, Editor, Heat Magazine: "The biggest stories of the year have all been relationship stories. Probably the biggest of the lot was the surprise spilt of Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, and that has kind of kept people captivated throughout the year actually. Because as well as the split and the divorce and who gets what, the stories then after that were obviously their new partners. You had Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz, who met on the set of Vanilla Sky, and there is clearly chemistry there as you can tell from the footage we have already seen from the film, and they became a real life couple." 6. File Tom and Nicole - 7. File Nicole Kidman - 8. SOT Nicole (on split): "As Baz says, the show must go on and so you ,move forward, everyone knows that, everyone goes through tough times and so... " 9. Film clip 'Vanilla Sky' 10. File Tom Cruise and Penelope Cruz 11. SOT Mark Frith: "Then of course you have got the tantalizing thought that it could be Nicole Kidman and Robbie Williams who are next to get together and whether or not they have been playing with the media and grabbing the attention themselves, it has just been a fascinating story. Personally, I don't think they are a couple, they haven't seen each other enough to be a couple, but there is clearly some chemistry between Nicole and Robbie, and that comes across in the video for probably the biggest single of the Christmas and New Year period which is 'Something Stupid'." 13. Video Clip 'Something Stupid'. 14. As much as I can. there are just certain things that you have to keep scared and I am going to do my best." 17. SOT Mark Frith (on J-Lo): " Another relationship that happened really quickly I guess was Jennifer Lopez and Chris Judd. We found that they were going out very quickly and then we found out that they were engaged, and then quickly they were wed, again I think there is a greater intensity in showbiz relationships, they spend more time together, probably go through more extreme stuff together, especially if they are working together like Jennifer Lopez and Chris Judd are, and if they can keep that going that is fantastic." 18. She is into the rock and roll indulgence, she is a bit over the top, she is a larger than life personality in more ways than one." 23. File Pamela Anderson and Kid Rock 24. File Liz Hurley 25. It is frustrating sometimes , it is slightly irritating, you try to make sure that you look presentable when you walk out the front door just incase someone is lurking in the bushes, all those sorts of things, but it is just part of it and I am very used to it now and I don't let it affect how I live my life, I carry on exactly as I would do if I weren't in this position. I still take Mia to a little baby music group, and we go to the swimming baths and I just do everything like normal and that is how I deal with it. (Reporter: How is motherhood?) It is fantastic, it is the best thing in the world, nothing compares to it." 32. Music clip ALL CHANGE UNDER THE MISTLETOE It's been a year of partner shuffling for some of the world's biggest stars - seemingly settled showbiz relationships have ended, while others have sprung up and blossomed despite the pressure of the ever watchful press. The biggest headline catcher was TOM CRUISE and NICOLE KIDMAN's surprise split at the beginning of the year - Cruise filed for divorce from the actress in February, after 10 years of marriage. A quickie divorce followed, citing irreconcilable differences, as the stars publicly blamed their faltering marriage on "divergent careers which constantly kept them apart." The two stars settled for an undisclosed sum, and shared custody of their two children. The rumour mill had plenty to keep it turning when Cruise began seeing his Vanilla Sky co-star PENELOPE CRUZ. The pair met making the film, but insist they did not become romantically involved until after the movie was finished - and Cruise's marriage was over. Cruise and Cruz made their first public appearance as a couple five months ago, at the LA premiere of another Cruz film, 'Captain Corelli's Mandolin' . They recently appeared at a string of promotional premieres for 'Vanilla Sky', including a launch in Kidman's home town of Sydney, Australia. Fans there gave them a warm welcome despite warnings that sympathy for Nicole might cool their reception. While their relationship goes from strength to strength, Nicole seems to be winning the post-split publicity battle. Her performances in Baz Lurhmann's musical 'Moulin Rouge' and Alejandro Amenabar's spooky thriller 'The Others' have received rave reviews and Golden Globe nominations, while critics tip an Academy Award is a likely follow-up. Her duet with Robbie Williams 'Somethin' Stupid' won the coveted Christmas number one spot in the UK charts, and sparked rumours of a 'did they-didn't they' romance between the pair in the British press. Another high profile February breakup was JENNIFER LOPEZ and rapper impresario SEAN 'P.DIDDY' COMBS. The split came after a two year romance in the spotlight and after both artists were involved in a court case concerning an incident about an illegal firearm. In March (2001), J-Lo appeared at the Academy Awards on the arm of dancer CRIS JUDD, who she had met taping the video for her single 'Love Don't Cost a Thing'. It was a whirlwind romance - the pair were married by the end of September. Meanwhile, September saw a marriage breakup for British film star KATE WINSLET, after three years with her film director husband Jim Threapleton, which seemed one of the most solid relationships in showbiz. Winslet's spokesman Robert Garlock announced "No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation. Their daughter Mia will remain first priority for both of them." The couple had met on the set of 'Hideous Kinky' and married on November 22, 1998. Mia was born in October last year. The '"Titanic' actress never seemed to tire of describing their wedded bliss and how the birth of their daughter Mia had made them stronger than ever. Meeting him also helped ease the pain of the death from cancer in December 1997 of her ex-boyfriend, scriptwriter Stephen Tedre. The difference in status between the two rarely seemed to be an issue, and Winslet claimed they hardly talked about money. But Threapleton has since cited Kate's devotion to her work as the main cause of the break up. Winslet has found comfort in a new relationship though, with 'American Beauty' director SAM MENDES. The pair admitted they were involved in November (01), stressing they met after the marriage was over, tarting out as friends. Kate is reported to have told friends that she's 'madly in love' with the British director who has in the past described himself as pathologically afraid of commitment, and has been linked to a string of Hollywood stars including Cameron Diaz, Jane Horrocks, Ally McBeal's Calista Flockhart, and, most recently, Rachel Weisz, from whom he split in March. Former Baywatch star PAMELA ANDERSON has found new romance with rock star KID ROCK, a one time friend of her ex-husband TOMMY LEE. The actress was married to Lee for three years until 1998, and is now in the middle of a messy custody battle over their two children. British actress LIZ HURLEY who first hit the headlines when she appeared at the premiere of 'Four Weddings and a Funeral' in an eye-popping Versace dress, will soon be seen in maternity wear - she is expecting her first baby next April. The former model says she has suffered little morning sickness and no cravings, and is looking forward to being a mother. She claims the father is American millionaire Stephen Bing, who had an on-off relationship with the actress this year. But Hurley is to bring the child up as a single mother. But it seems the 'Bedazzled' star can expect moral support from her ex-boyfriend of 13 years, 'Bridget Jones's Diary' star HUGH GRANT, who has been seen visiting her at her home. My manager Paul, all of my attorneys, my production staff, Steve, Louis. Keep booing, keep booing little girl - I will hit a man with glasses. My family, Hayley, everybody, Nate my brother, Aunt Betty, my Uncle Jack, everybody who stayed with me the whole time. MTV from the very first time you played my video and I was nobody and nobody would play my videos - y'all made me somebody thank you." 58. Music clip - 'Without Me' by Eminem MOBY EMINEM WENT TOO FAR? Eminem won four awards at the MTV Video Music Awards on Thursday, but it didn't put the rapper in a good mood - he found time to feud with his nemesis Moby, then ended up getting booed by the crowd. It was just part of the annual celebrity circus that is the Video Music Awards, which featured a typically bizarre appearance from Michael Jackson and a standing ovation for former Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off the show with a rousing yet poignant performance that celebrated the spirit of the city. Springsteen sang the title cut to his new disc, 'The Rising,' which touches on the emotions and the aftermath of Sept. 11. That reverent spirit didn't last for long. At Radio City Music Hall, host Jimmy Fallon lampooned nominees including Eminem, Nelly and teen rocker Avril Lavigne by spoofing their videos. Perhaps the biggest surprise was when pop queen Britney Spears emerged to give an "Artist of the Millennium" award to Jackson, whose first album of the new millennium, 'Invincible,' only garnered two hits and was a commercial disappointment. The award coincided with the King of Pop's 44th birthday. "When I was a little boy growing up in Gary, Indiana," Jackson said softly, "I never dreamed of getting the Artist of the Millennium award." Eminem provided the evening's biggest shocker - he was booed after winning the award for best male video for 'Without Me.' (He also won video of the year, rap video and direction for the clip, a comic-book style satire). The tension started when one of his frequent targets, Christina Aguilera, presented the award. Aguilera looked like she wanted to drop it on the floor rather than put it in his hand. Then he took a pot shot at techno artist Moby, calling the bespectacled artist a girl (Moby irritated Eminem last year by criticizing his lyrics as misogynist). The boos from the audience began. "Yeah, keep booing," Eminem said. Appearing to look in Moby's direction, he added, "I will hit a man with glasses." The audience later cheered him when he won the video of the year award. Despite that excitement and spectacular sets created for the a-list performers there were plenty of lulls in the program. Scripted banter between presenters like twins Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen and actress Brittany Murphy and Anthony Kiedis from the Red Hot Chili Peppers fell flat. When the camera panned the audience during some of Fallon's skits, they appeared confused - or worse, bored. Typically, the awards are held after the Labor Day holiday in early September. Because of the approaching anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, the network pushed the show up to August. This year's show paid special tribute to the city. Giuliani received a standing ovation when he came out to thank the music industry for their support of New York after the attacks. Then Sheryl Crow sang a song dedicated to New Yorkers; during the performance, images of residents were shown, and at the end, the trademark "I Love NY" symbol emerged. Besides Eminem's prizes, Pink, No Doubt, The White Stripes each won two. There was also the fashion show that the awards bring. Spears arrived in a black leather outfit with a cap that made her look like an auxiliary member of the Village People. Pink looked punk with a short black hair style, tattooed arms and a black-and-green striped dress. A streaky-haired Aguilera donned a halter that barely seemed to cover her. They lost Joey Ramone and I would like to give an award to the remaining Ramones who are going to appear in a very un-punk rock situation right now." 53. Performance U2 'Elevation'. FATBOY SLIM SWEEPS BOARD AT MTV AWARDS. Fatboy Slim's 'Weapon of Choice' video was the big winner at Thursday's MTV Video Music Awards, winning six of the nine awards for which it was nominated, but it was the sexy video 'Lady Marmalade' that took home the year's top trophy. On the over-the-top-goings-on front, Puff Daddy entered straddling an 18 wheeler truck while rapping his latest single 'Bad Boys For Life', the host made fun of Backstreet Boy AJ McLean's battle with alcohol abuse, Britney Spears writhed with snakes and the power went down just before U2's performance. 'Lady Marmalade,' the 'Moulin Rouge'-inspired video, was a collaboration featuring Pink, Christina Aguilera, Mya and Lil' Kim. It also received an award for best video from a film. The night's other big winner was 'N Sync, who received four awards for their special-effects laden video, 'Pop', including the viewer's choice award. The 'Weapon of Choice' clip by Fatboy Slim, a DJ, doesn't even feature the artist; its star is actor Christopher Walken, dancing around an empty hotel lobby. Among the early awards it nabbed was for best direction, for Spike Jonze, and best choreography. Fatboy Slim, real name Norman Cook, flew to New York with wife Zoe Ball for the show, playing a surprise set at a trendy club in the city earlier in the week. As always, however, the awards themselves tend to be an afterthought, upstaged by the evening's over-the-top moments. Thursday was no exception, as 'N Sync capped off a colorful rendition of 'Pop' with the King of Pop himself, Michael Jackson. Jackson gyrated for only a few seconds to 'N Sync's hit, but received a standing ovation from the crowd. Another anticipated moment was Spears' performance of her new song, 'I'm A Slave For You,' which featured the singer slithering on stage with a snake and a tiger, despite the protestations of animal rights campaigners PETA. The radical campaign group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) had written to the 19-year-old star requesting that she not use big cats on stage, but the appeal failed and the singer performed a raunchy routine in a bikini top and low-cut hot pants. Her choreographer Wade Robson defended the routine, saying: "There wasno mistreatment of any animals. They had trainers and handlers." He added: "She was not afraid of the tiger. But the snake freaked her out." Mudvayne won the MTV2 award spotlighting emerging artists, but it was hard to concentrate on the heavy metal group's acceptance speech: They appeared at the podium in gory makeup that made them look as if they had been shot in the forehead, with fake blood oozing down their face and chest. And Macy Gray upstaged the announcement of the award for best new artist as she urged everyone "to take a minute and concentrate on my dress," which read: 'My new album drops Sept. 18, 2001.' The night was not without its glitches: As U2 was about to perform 'Elevation', a technical problem forced MTV to cut to commercials until it was fixed. "So MTV weren't paying their electricity bill," quipped Bono before the group received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard award for lifetime achievement. Collaborating with No Doubt's Gwen Stefani proved to be good move for Moby and Eve; the DJ won best male video for his 'South Side' video featuring Stefani, and Eve won best female video for 'Let Me Blow Ya Mind,' also with Stefani. Comedian-host Jamie Foxx got the evening off to a somewhat raunchy start. After parodying the evening's setting at the Metropolitan Opera House with opera renditions of hits like '"Bootylicious,' he launched into a monologue that had to be bleeped by MTV censors. Foxx had previously said he would not lampoon celebrities during the show, but apparently had a change of heart, joking about Mariah Carey's recent nervous breakdown and Backstreet Boy AJ McLean's battle with alcohol abuse. The Backstreet Boys gave out the evening's first award, for Best Hip-Hhop video. Before OutKast picked up their trophy, McLean thanked MTV and fans for supporting him during his recent stint in rehab. "Today is 64 days sober, and I'm proud of it," he said to applause. As the group made its way off the stage, Foxx held out a bottle to them. "You want some champagne, some champagne?" he joked before the stunned crowd. "It's apple cider, apple cider! You can drink apple cider, can't you?" Moments later, however, the mood turned somber with a tribute to Aaliyah, who was killed Aug. 25 in a plane crash. Janet Jackson, Missy 'Misdemeanor' Elliott, Ginuwine and Timbaland joined Aaliyah's brother, Rashad Haughton, in remembering the 22-year-old singer and actress, who was to be a presenter Thursday evening. "I think what we've got to learn out of this to appreciate each other while we're here on earth," said Elliott, who wore a white jacket with Aaliyah's image on the back and her name on the side. "I love you Aaliyah, and you're forever missed." Bono also paid tribute to Joey Ramone, who died earlier this year of lymphoma, as he introduced the remaining members of the legendary punk rock group The Ramones to the audience. Among the evening's performers was Jennifer Lopez, who sang her latest hit 'I'm Real' with rapper Ja Rule during the show; Linkin Park; U2; Jay-Z and Elliott, who dedicated her performance to Aaliyah. Prior to the show, fans who gathered outside to greet their favourite stars were treated to concert performances by Alien Ant Farm, City High and Eve. Sean 'P.Diddy' Combs made the grandest entrance: He arrived on top of an 18-wheeler truck, rapping his latest hit, 'Bad Boys for Life.'" Stars at the event included veteran rocker Mick Jagger, who arrived alone, and Craig David, currently in America trying to repeat his British success. Janet Jackson arrived hand-in-hand with a mystery man, while newly-engaged Jennifer Lopez was accompanied by fiance Chris Judd, but continued her series of revealing fashions with leopard-skin hotpants and top. And Pamela Anderson created a frenzy on the red carpet when she appeared with new boyfriend Kid Rock, dressed in a low-cut, midriff-baring leather top and hotpants. Lowly non-showbiz types were allowed to watch from across the street as winners and losers arrived to toast success or commiserate with losers at the Vanity Fair party. Star after star piled into the annual bash in Morton's in West Hollywood for what has become one of the hottest post-Oscar tickets in tinseltown. The gathering dinner for 150 of Hollywood's finest, then followed by a post-awards party for around 1,000. So many crammed in that one unlucky woman guest fainted in the overcrowded space. Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock rubbed shoulders with Joan Collins and her new husband, while Cameron Diaz, Mel Gibson and Janet Jackson mingled inside. Cuba Gooding Jnr explained the appeal for guests too famous to be star struck. "It's just being in there, you know because you're surrounded by so many people either you've worked with or want to work with, you know and everybody's just chilled. They're not trying to promote a movie, they're not waiting to see if they won or lost. It's over, they get to drink on and they don't worry about it. Renee Zellweger took the chance to prove she didn't mind losing out on the best actress prize to Halle Berry. "So many things for different reasons. Halle Berry's speech, the profundity of the moment was overwhelming. How to watch her and how emotional she was, how grateful she is an how gracious it was quite a moment - so I would say this was definitely the star on the Christmas tree. Gwyneth Paltrow, famously tearful herself when she won the best actress oscar in 1999, agreed Halle Berry's moment on stage was the highlight of the evening. "I think Halle Berry winning. I think her speech and she just broke my heart I just loved it. You know me, I'm a cry baby!" Even Sean 'P.Diddy' Combs admitted seeing a black actress take the Oscar had him reaching for his tissues. "I was so emotional. I couldn't really hold myself together. I have to say I definitely shed a tear. I'm happy for us - I'm happy for everybody, you know." Denzel Washington arrived with his Best Actor Oscar, while the last black actor to have won the award, Sidney Poitier, arrived still reeling at having been given a lifetime achievement award. "I was overwhelmed. Thirty-seven years is quite a long wait." Ron Howard brought his Best Director Oscar along too, as did this year's Best Supporting Actor Jim Broadbent. Empty handed nominees consoling themselves with the party included Sir Ben Kingsley, Marisa Tomei, Sissy Spacek, director David Lynch and Nicole Kidman. Other guests included Paul McCartney, there to 'shake his booty', and Moulin Rouge director Baz Lurhmann with his wife Catherine Martin, winner of the costume design oscar for her work on the lush musical. Some of the stars also made an appearance at Sir ELTON JOHN's charity party at Moomba's, also in West Hollywood. Joan Collins and Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills made it to both events. The guest list for Sir Elton's annual fundraiser for money to fight AIDS also included Lionel Ritchie, John Goodman, Darryl Hannah and Don Johnson. The singer said it was an Oscar year to remember. "I didn't think there were that many surprises. I thought Halle Berry would win, I thought Denzel had a really good chance. I think the Sidney Poitier speech was so beautiful, so eloquent, so elegant - one of the classiest things - as he is anyways - one of the most classy human beings on the planet - but a very moving speech that he made. And then for Halle and Denzel to win on the same night - it's a bit like Virginia Wade winning Wimbledon, you know? It was like one of those nights that you'd never forget!"
