This black & white educational film is an episode of the series Expedition with our host, producer John D. Craig. The show documented journeys to various remote regions of the world, looking for such unusual things. Copyright 1961.<p><p>Opening title montage: EXPEDITION - with our host John D. Craig. John D. Craig introduces the episode: VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH (:07-1:09). John D. Craig sits in a chair and discusses the upcoming episode (1:10-2:04). Title: Valley in the Shadow of Death. Father Hubbard narrates. Map of Alaska. Aniakchak Crater is pointed at. Father Hubbard boards an old fishing boat. A dog barks. Cargo is put on the boat. The fishing boat leaves the port. Dogs don't like being on a boat. Snow capped mountains. Dogs are fed food. Nice sunset. Freezing rain turns to sleet. Dogs are soaking wet and not happy. Rough seas (2:05-4:33). Father Hubbard shakes the hand of the skipper. Father Hubbard, the dogs, and a helper leave the boat, get to the land. A man climbs the side of the rock. Men climb the sides and need to help one another. Ancient symbols in the rock. Two Kodiak bear cubs move and climb (4:34-6:49). A friend has a plane, he shows up and will bring the people to the crater. Father Hubbard boards the plane. Men wave goodbye. The plane takes off from the water into the air (6:50-8:06). Clouds in the sky. Mountain tops and snow covered mountains. Giant black crater, still smoking. Plane turns and gets close. Plane lands on the water. Dogs are ready and jump out of the plane. Father Hubbard and his friend get onto the crater's side. Animation shows what became of the mountain (8:07-9:57). A week later, the rest of the men arrived. Men make food, camping style. Dogs bark and move around. Men walk towards the crater. A man picks at the black ash. Men walk towards the crater. A clear spring, lava flow, steam with poisonous gases rising into the air. The men walk near the rising gases (9:58-11:58). Smoke billows all around them. Gases float around. The men have black soot on their faces. They jump into the freezing waters to get clean (11:59-13:07). Distant smoke. Still beauty of crater lake. The men have a mass. John D. Craig speaks (13:08-13:55). Opposite side of the crater was the biggest and most dangerous crater of all. Giant billows of smoke. Steam and gases are 600 feet below. The men are surrounded by the gases. It looks like a chamber of hell (13:56-15:10). Outside of the crater, The men make some food and feed the dogs. Men climb the side, gases and steam surround them. One of the men fires a rifle. Gases rise around the pit. Men go down into the pit. Steam is everywhere (15:11-17:33). Men are halfway down the crater looking around. Men collect volcanic samples from the source. Men walk across rocks. Dogs are with them. Steam and dust burns your nose and mouth (17:34-19:03). The men try and keep everyone near one another as well as the dogs. It is tough to see and breathe. One of the men tries to check the temperature in the ground but it melts. Father Hubbard finds a dead bird. They stick a pick into the volcano and it melts the top of it. The ground swells and is extremely hot (19:04-21:00). Fresh clouds of steam and smoke. Men walk around, eyes burning, lungs aching. Father Hubbard and the men grab mineral specimen. They pick at the rocks. Rising plumes of steam, smoke, and ash (21:01-22:47). Tough to see through the plumes. Men stand in the rising steam. The men walk out of the crater. John D. Craig wraps up the episode with comments (22:48-24:46). End credits (24:47-25:39).<p><p>Bernard Rosecrans Hubbard (1888–1962) was an American geologist and explorer who popularized the Alaskan wilderness in American media during the middle of the 20th century.
