It''''s very important for this governor to see you know, the damage so that you can coordinate and work as quickly as possible, because the key thing here is a quick response. I also want to declare a state of emergency for Ventura County." 8. Close view two residents of La Conchita 9. Wide view of Schwarzenegger shaking hands with residents STORYLINE: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger visited the south of the US state on Wednesday, touring the scene of a deadly mudslide in an area north of Los Angeles. Rescuers continue to search for survivors after a rain-triggered mudslide shifted tons of dirt and rocks into the community of La Conchita, a small community between the Pacific Ocean and the hills south of Santa Barbara. At least 10 people were killed and 10 injured when a rain-saturated hillside came crashing down on more than a dozen homes on Monday afternoon. Before dawn on Wednesday, rescuers found the bodies of three children and a woman in the pile of mud and rubble - the wife and children of a La Conchita resident who had dug alongside the crews since the mudslide. Crews using cameras, trained dogs and microphones continued to dig around the clock to find about a dozen others listed as missing. Governor Schwarzenegger surveyed the devastation on Wednesday morning. After a tour by helicopter, he walked into the disaster zone where he met groups of weary rescuers and residents. Schwarzenegger said he came to see the magnitude of the damage, thank rescue workers and give his condolences to residents who lost family and friends. Nearly a week of record-breaking rainfall has given way to clear skies and typically mild southern California temperatures, though it''''s likely to be weeks before the region digs out from a series of brutal storms that killed at least 28 people. Power to more than 800,000 homes and businesses across the state were knocked out by the storms. Despite the clearing skies, authorities warned that flooding was still possible throughout the region as run-off spilled from dams and rain-swollen creeks.

Limousine carrying a body leaves the area STORYLINE: At least six people have been killed and 14 injured in a mudslide that sent a thunderous cascade of trees and dirt onto the Californian town of La Conchita. Rescuers with listening devices sensitive enough to pick up a whimper or a faint tapping searched for victims on Tuesday. Authorities said around a dozen people were missing, and 10 had been injured. Neighbours and relatives of the missing watched in agony as rescuers hauled away dirt bucket by bucket and looked for signs of life. The dirt flowed like a waterfall, engulfing more than a dozen homes in a four-block area of the town 113 kilometres (70 miles) northwest of Los Angeles. Panicked residents ran as the tons of mud closed in one them; others ran toward the mudslide, helping some of the injured reach safety. Twelve homes were destroyed and 16 were damaged. Yellow-clad firefighters and prison crews in orange suits clambered over the dark brown mound, using their hands, shovels, buckets, wheelbarrows and chainsaws. Initial work was done by hand, but by afternoon, a digger was brought in to move larger debris. Tow trucks removed flattened vehicles. The mudslide was a by-product of a ferocious string of storms that have claimed at least 19 lives around California since Friday.

SOUNDBITE (English) Roberto Benigni, Actor/Writer/Director: "Thank you very much. Bye." AMERICA WELCOMES BENIGNI'S PINOCCHIO Roberto Benigni brought his wife Nicoletta Braschi and his trademark enthusiasm to Los Angeles on Sunday for the premiere of a special American version of his live action take on 'Pinocchio.' The Italian language film of the classic fairy tale has been dubbed for American audiences, with actor Breckin Meyer ('Clueless', 'Kate and Leopold') providing the voice for Benigni's star performance. 'Pinocchio' recorded the most successful debut ever in Italy, taking a huge 6.9 (m) million US dollars (euros) on its opening weekend. At a cost of around 45 (m) million US dollars, it is the most expensive Italian picture of all time. Two time Oscar-winner Benigni takes the lead role as the wooden puppet who comes to life, while his wife Nicoletta Brashci plays the beautiful Blue Fairy, who does her best to guide him. The pair have shared the screen in several other films, most notably 'Life is Beautiful,' ('La Vita e Bella') which earned Benigni the 1999 Academy Awards for Best Actor and Best Director. In 'Pinocchio,' Benigni takes the classic fairy tale back to it's homeland, setting it in Italy. Working again with fellow screenwriter Cincenzo Cerami, Benigni adapted the screenplay from the original book by 19th Century Italian author Carlo Collodi. The tale follow's Pinocchio's odyssey to become a real boy. He was created as a life-like wooden puppet by a childless puppetmaker, Gepetto, and comes alive as the result of the old man's wish. Not content with being an artificial boy, the puppet goes on a quest to become real. Despite advice from the Blue Fairy (the character Disney fans associate with Jiminy Cricket) and the love of his father Gepetto, Pinocchio's curiosity leads him into a string of wild adventures that distract him from his dream. He encounters mysterious fairies, colourful circus, magic forests, talking animals and fantastical toys. Pinocchio opened on 940 screens - the largest number ever in Italy and almost one third of the country's total - on October 11 2002. The film is released in North America on December 25, Australia on the December 26 and the UK on December 27. CLEARANCE DETAILS Pinocchio Miramax 212 941 3800
