Firefighters talking to residents STORYLINE: Some residents at a Los Angeles mobile home park returned to their burnt out homes on Wednesday, despite a ban from authorities. Trailers in the devastated Sky Terrace Lodge mobile home park, situated in the Lake View Terrace section of Los Angeles were reduced to lumps of melted plastic and buckled wood by a wildfire that tore through the region on Monday. Residents were seen sifting through the charred remains of their homes as they struggled to come to grips with what they'd lost. More than 30 mobile homes were destroyed in the blaze. The fire was one of a series of blazes that have flared in hilly brushlands on Los Angeles' northern edge and along subdivisions to the west. Firefighters said on Wednesday they were close to containing a fire Southwest of the San Fernando Valley, after it erupted in Point Mugu State Park's La Jolla Canyon and grew to 20 acres (8 hectares) just above Pacific Coast Highway. On the north coast of San Diego County, a 6-square-mile (15-square kilometre) fire at the Marine Corps Camp Pendleton was 75 percent contained. Meanwhile, most evacuation orders were lifted for residents of about 1,500 homes in neighbouring Oceanside and for many Marine Corps personnel and family members in military housing, but some remained in emergency shelters. The outbreak of fires followed the weekend arrival of the first significant Santa Ana winds of the season. The notorious Santa Ana wind's usually sweep in between October and February as cold, dry air descending over the Great Basin flows toward Southern California and squeezes through mountain passes and canyons. The extremely low humidity levels, which make vegetation easier to burn, and high wind speeds then often combine to whip fires into infernos.
