The yellow puppet - already on his way to achieving cult status through his appearances in the Levi's Sta-Prest commercial - has propelled 'Flat Beat' by MR OIZO straight to pole position. Flat Eric has become a huge star from his brief appearances in the advertisements in which he nods along to the repetitive beat of the single. In the video the character - created by QUENTIN DUPIEUX, who also directed the commercials - is seen sitting at a desk in a luxurious Paris apartment. Industry experts believe it is the biggest merchandising opportunity since adult cartoon South Park, which was the runaway success for spin-off T-shirts last year. However no merchandise has yet been authorised. Mr Oizo has sold more than 122,000 copies this week, nearly double The Cartoons' sales of 66,000. Chart expert Jason Legg of HMV said Mr Oizo's strong sales were almost entirely down to the Flat Eric phenomenon. "It's quite an underground type of track and very club-friendly, but people have really bought into the whole image of Flat Eric. It's like the Muppets meets Daft Punk," he said. "It would have probably gone top 40 because the label, F-Communications, is quite cool and French house music has become quite acceptable. "But people are left under no illusion about what they are buying with this single because, whereas as the dance scene is usually quite anonymous, this has got Flat Eric on the CD cover and in the video."
