Lithium recovery, animation
Animation showing how a capacitive deionisation cell can recover lithium ions (blue) from a lithium-containing solution. Capacitive deionisation is a process in which ions, such as lithium, are removed from a solution by the application of an electric field. When the power is on, electrons (black with white minus symbol) flow to the upper electrode, making it negatively charged and leaving positive holes in the lower electrode. The electrodes attract the opposite charged ions in the water. The upper electrode is covered in a selectively permeable membrane, that only allows the uptake of lithium ions, leaving other positively charged ions in the water to be washed out of the cell. When the power is off, electrons flow back to the electrode they came from, releasing the lithium ions for recovery. The system also stores the electric charge (capacitance) like a battery and the flow of electrons back to their original electrode can be used to power components such as the light bulb. For a version of this animation with text labels, see K013/9737.

Y-12 atomic production facility; Trinity Shot atomic text explosion in the United States; Truman speaks about atomic secrets.
Atomic bomb production and its use in the United States. Doctor Ernest O. Lawrence experiments with the cyclotron at the University of California, Berkeley. View of the exterior and interior of the cyclotron. An animated diagram shows the results of the splitting of the uranium atom. Diagram shows a nucleus, electrons and protons. Atomic structures of Helium, Lithium and Uranium. A diagram of the creation of barium and krypton, and the release of atomic energy. Aerial and ground views of Y-12 atomic energy testing, uranium enrichment, and manufacturing plant at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Workers walking on the grounds of the the plant. The Trinity Shot first atomic explosion is shown near Los Alamos, New Mexico on July 16, 1945. Flash of explosion and a cloud of smoke rises as seen from U.S. Army cameras 6 miles away. Two other views of the explosion are seen from other camera positions while narrator explains the effects. U.S. President Harry S. Truman speaks of the need to keep the secrets of the atomic bomb among the U.S., the U.K, and Canada, alone, until they find successful techniques to control the bomb and protect the world from total destruction. He indicates that he will work the the U.S. Congress in the effort and make the power a force for world peace. Truman asks that God guide the U.S. in how to use the technology in His ways and for His purposes. (World War II period). Location: United States USA. Date: 1945.

Flying around a brown dwarf, animation
Animated fly-in and orbit of a brown dwarf orbiting a star in space. A brown dwarf is an object of star-like composition, but without the mass required to allow it to begin the hydrogen-fusing reactions that power stars. As such, it is more like a large gas giant planet than a star. While some brown dwarfs shine brightly in infrared light, it is not known whether they also emit visible light. This animation suggests how a Jupiter-like brown dwarf emitting visible light, and illuminated by its star, may appear to the human eye.

CALIFORNIA SODIUM RESOURCES AT SEARLES LAKE - 1960S
Pan across the dried lake bed of Searles Lake in California which is a key source of lithium salts and other sodium compounds then zoom in to the processing plant nearby then a worker's hand picking up the white substance to test its texture. Cut to red cinnabar ore being transferred out of a mine in box cars then shown in its final form of liquid mercury being poured into a glass beaker.

Ringed brown dwarf, animation
Animation of a hypothetical ringed brown dwarf in deep space. Brown dwarfs are objects which have a size between that of a giant planet like Jupiter and that of a small star. They are not massive enough to sustain nuclear fusion of hydrogen into helium in their cores. However, they can fuse deuterium and the most massive can fuse lithium. While some brown dwarfs shine brightly in infrared light, it is not known whether they also emit visible light. This animation depicts how a brown dwarf emitting visible light and illuminated by a nearby star, may appear to the human eye.
