CLOSE TO 2,500 TRUCKERS SEEKING UNION REPRESENTATION CONVOYED THEIR TRACTORS TO LOS ANGELES' CITY HALL TUESDAY IN A MILES-LONG PROTEST OF THEIR PAY, BENEFITS AND WORKING CONDITIONS. THE PREDOMINANTLY LATINO TRUCK DRIVERS WERE SEEKING THE SUPPORT OF CITY OFFICIALS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO GET UNION REPRESENTATION. SECURITY WAS TIGHTENED AROUND CITY HALL AND AT LEAST 30 MOTORCYCLE OFFICERS WERE ASSIGNED TO DIRECT TRAFFIC IN THE CIVIC CENTER AREA AS THE 2,500 TRUCKERS BEGAN PASSING BY AT ABOUT 3 P.M. PST. THE TRUCKERS AFFECTED DELIVER CONTAINER LOADS TO WAREHOUSES THROUGHOUT SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AND TYPICALLY MAKE ABOUT $50 PER LOAD. AMONG THE TRUCKERS' CONCERNS IS HAVING TO WAIT IN LONG LINES WITHOUT PAY AT THE PORTS FOR A LOAD. THE TRUCKERS WANT A CENTRAL DISPATCH SYSTEM AT THE PORTS TO PREVENT TRAFFIC TIE-UPS.
