This coming week the city plays host to tens of thousands of politicians, media and protesters when it hosts a convention for one of America's main political parties, the Democrats. City leaders say they are ready. The Democrats, one of America's main political parties is putting on a made for television convention in Los Angeles next week. The last time the city played host to something this big was the Olympics in 1984. L-A is more renown for designer shopping streets, kitsch hotels and Hollywood glamour. But L-A also has an ugly side. For a city so rich it does little to help the poor. And indeed the difference can be quite striking. The streets are being cleaned of people city officials don't want to be seen by the thousands coming in from out of town. Huge security fences are being erected around the perimeter of the Staples arena, site of next week's Democratic National Convention. L-A Mayor Richard Riordan has done much to clean up the city's image during his seven year tenure. But he has also presided over an ugly period, the riots in 1994. SOUNDBITE: (English) "When you see a different image on television or in the papers than the reality you know it frustrates me but I've been in politics long enough that you have got to play the card carefully, you accept what happens, you go on and you run the city and I am proud to run this great great city and these beautiful wonderful people. SUPER CAPTION: LA Mayor Richard Riordan It exactly these images Riordan is trying to make everyone forget. And he has instructed the police and the sheriffs department to up the ante against any possible disruption by streets protesters during the convention. SOUNDBITE: (English) "They have every right to protest within in the law and we encourage that. It is when they start acting outside that, acting in a violent fashion, breaking windows, destroying property, then, it will be come necessary for law enforcement to address that situation. SUPER CAPTION: Captain Michael Kenyan, Los Angeles Sheriffs department L-A wants an international image of a feel good city not of traffic, pollution and riots. Los Angelians are hoping for a smooth running of the convention, if for no other reason so they can return to the beach and forget about all the trouble in the world.
