GAY/ LESBIAN PROTEST (2/14/1994)
MEMBERS OF THE NEWLY-FORMED TEXAS CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL GAY RIGHTS ORGANIZATION "GAY AND LESBIAN AMERICANS" TODAY CALLED FOR THE REPEAL OF THE TEXAS SODOMY LAW. THE LAW PROHIBITS SEX BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THE SAME SEX AND CERTAIN SEX ACTS BETWEEN MEMBERS OF THE OPPOSITE SEX. THE GROUP SAYS THE LAW IS USED TO DENY BASIC RIGHTS TO GAYS AND LESBIANS. LAST YEAR THE DALLAS POLICE DEPARTMENT REFUSED TO HIRE A LESBIAN AND CITED THE STATE'S SODOMY LAW AS THE REASON. A COURT LATER FORCED THE DEPARTMENT TO HIRE THE WOMAN. ATTEMPTS WERE MADE IN THE LEGISLATURE LAST YEAR TO OVERTURN THE LAW BUT THOSE ATTEMPTS FAILED.
