It is the second planet from the Sun, and its thick carbon dioxide atmosphere produces a runaway greenhouse effect, raising the surface temperature to some 460 degrees Celsius. The surface is a rocky desert with sporadic volcanism. The surface atmospheric pressure is some 90 times that of Earth, making it uninhabitable for life as we know it. Early in its history it is thought to have had an Earth-like climate, before the greenhouse effect produced the current climate.
